Title: Troy Alves: "I'm Looking for a Contract"
Post by: powermaxx9 on June 28, 2010, 06:36:35 PM
Some raw honesty by Troy Alves on the PBW show tonight. Says it aint as easy these days to get a contract.  Bob said budgets are tight.  Troy seems like a good guy.  Better than some other lumpy ugly bodybuilders that have big contracts.  Why cant Troy get a contrract?  The guy still looks damn good.

That is odd, that you see other slobs with contracts and not Troy.  Always liked his physique and attitude in the sport.  Back in the early 2000's he had one of the most aesthetic/pleasing physiques around (not counting calves)

it really is a shame.............the industry is always looking for the new up-and-comer..............

these guys like melvin, and troy, and tony are almost victims of their own success.........because they have been around so long

that, and the fact that they are black doesnt help..............its not that anyone doesnt like black people.........its just that the supplement buying public is primarily white, and many of the black competitors look very similar, plus black guys dominate the sport, so everyone is looking for next good white guy who has a different look

You have to get people who can move products.  Most people who buy supps never go to a bodybuilding contest so name recognition isn't THAT big of a deal.  It's more of a look than anything

Troy has one of the few admirable and extremely pussy pleasing physiques out there. No pregnant alien belly or muscles that are degrading like non-existant triceps or washed out quads.

Never had the greatest calves, but those never won any shows anyway. If his ass and hams got as diced as the rest of his physique I think it'd be enough to win over some of the bias judges. I've always wished this guy well. Never seems to get a break which is pathetic in these shitty times.

Really? Marketing must not be your major. Hmmmm, Hide is probably the only successful japanese pro bodybuilder in the world. First japanese competitor to compete in the Olympia. He is perhaps very well known in Japan. Put all that together and BAM! He probably sells a big percentage to the asian community which is very limited besides someone like Stan McQuay.

Flex Lewis, well, young, good looking guy, white, enough said. ;D

Troy, seems like a good guy, but old, not very good looking, doesn't stand out among the crowd of elite black bodybuilders, just your run of the mill IFBB pro.

Basically right now, if you are a gifted, good looking bodybuilder, and probably white, you will get a good contract because they are rare. If you are black, you better be the 2nd coming of Flex Wheeler or perhaps a Phil Heath.

x2

At this point his best money making opportunity is "posing" 4 pay in the Middle East.  More than a few pro BB's have been very warmly received over there.  8)

well put, troy is a very good bber and has recently  put together some good showings conditioning wise,he was a amateur a long time and by the time turned pro a lot of guys passed him by,a little too late to get the big $$,flex lewis is built well and pushes gaspari products cause his look promotes what there selling hardcore training and the tshirts have that ed hardy thing going on.

Perhaps he should consider looking for a real job.

This is what the smart ones do.

Of course someone will come in here and say, "No it isn't true.  BB is very lucrative and you can make money.  You won't end up broke with no money and a couple of trophies to show for it". ::)

BB is even LESS mainstream than it was 15 years ago...so there isn't that much money to be made.

"panhandling"? No matter whether his business is booming or not...  why wouldnt he be looking for additional money? Would you refuse an additional 50-100K?

Because that is what all the Supp contracts are are paying out....  ::)

The B.S. never stops with you Chick...

Lets talk about most supplement "contracts" where the BBer in question gets a limited amount of free sups, and has to sling them to people on the side, and only gets paid for in store, or booth appearances.

Whats worse is they fork over the rights to many of their pictures to these shady Supp companies, and put a lock on how well they can market themselves from that point forward. If a reasonable offer came along during their tenure with the awful contract...well too damn bad!

Supp companies are extremely exploitative, and get away with it, because too many broke bbers are willing to do whatever it takes to "live the dream," and therefore fight for bread crumbs along with the rest of them.

That being said...your best bet is to be a photogenic person representing a underexposed race, or demographic.

I've personally put together many contracts for pro's...none of them were for supps only, or per appearance pay...lowest contract was for 40K.
In a business thats comprised of the have's and have nots, it works both ways, as one of the top competitors just signed a multi year deal for just under 400K/ yr. not including many other money making perks incorporated into the deal...

details will be out very soon.
