When is really  windy we don't walk on the beams , we "#### '' the iron (walk the bottom ledge of the beam) most of the work we do is sitting down , so when you walk the beams you have to be concentrated and try not to make mistakes, the first time I walked on a beam my legs were shaking and my asshole was pulsating  ;D  but  once you get used to it is not as hard as it seems but many, many  people just can't do it .

EDIT : C O O N   the iron ,haha

''A requirement for the tie off or iron workers while performing connector operations is not always required and indeed such procedure may be more hazardous. However, an alternative form of protection must be provided by the employer. Protection from falls must also be provided during access and egress. Aside from the cat being on that beam in the picture, I think there's an article about that being a fake picture. I'm sure the picture can/has been replicated since, but I remember seeing something talking about how fake the picture was.

Awesome man , any accidents /close calls..?

I've collided with other jumpers in the air but nothing serious

we descend at roughly 16 feet per second (landing is equivalent to jumping off a two story building) so most jumps end with at least one guy bruising ribs, breaking an ankle, or getting knocked out  :)

Thank you for your service.   :)

Not sure if this was the actual article I read or not, but here's one persons view as to why the picture is fake:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_the_photo_lunch_atop_a_skyscraper_real

Is the photo lunch atop a skyscraper real?

Yes - it most certainly is.
The photograph was taken by Charles C. Ebbets in 1932.
There is also another picture n the series entitled "Resting Atop a girder"
with 4 of the men asleep on the girder, which is even more dramatic.

You were there? You know someone who was there? How else could you be sure? In my opinion, the photo is faked, and here's why:
First, the halo around all the men indicates the men and the beam were 'burned in' from another negative. It is well done, but it is not perfect. Second, the contrast ratio of the men and beam is far higher than the rest of the print. You can see the drop out in the shadows made up of and from the men's shoes, while the cityscape has an entirely different tonal range. Third, if one closely examines city background in areas such as between a man's inner arm and body (such as the third man from the left) there is no city detail. This is because it is impossible to burn in an area that is so small and isolated.

A descendant of Ebbets claims to have the original glass negative, and therefor, it is not a fake. While I do not doubt the existence of a negative, I respectfully point out that it is likely a negative that is a shot of the first composite print. This way, many copies could be made thereafter without the meticulous work that would be required for the first print.

These days, one must be very careful not to believe everything they see on the internet as much of it is fake, right? Don't for one minute think this was not possible in the '30's. I remain skeptical that even the most seasoned iron worker would be so foolhardy.

My Grandfather was in New York during that time period, and according to my family is supposed to be in that picture. While I'm sure there are many who claim their relatives are in that picture, I can tell you from personal experience the picture is no fake. I saw him walking beams like that at an early age (fifty years ago) on construction jobs. He was a crusty character from a rough and tough time. He once fell from an i-beam onto his head (only one story I think) and wound up in the hospital. We rushed to New York, to the hospital, when we got there, he was not there. The staff said he had woke up, and just left. He hated doctors and hospitals.

Then there's this part to end the article.

The picture is definitely not faked. People that think it was do not understand the 1930's persona.
If the picture was from last year, or 10 years ago then I would agree it was faked, guys having lunch there with no OSHA safety equipment, would not happen.

I underlined the part above, just because I wanted to bring it to Che's attention, and ask him if he and/or his co-workers would/have done such a thing?

I think that picture was taken by a professional photographer and the guys were sitting on the beam  just for the picture , there is not work for 11 guys at  the same spot  on a connecting crew (4 guys max ).
The picture gives the illusion that the guys are sitting on a exterior beam 800 feet on the air and if they fall the would go all the way down to the ground (street),
My experience tell me they are sitting on a interior beam with a completely decked floor (  2 floors )below them.
there is no reason for taking break sitting on a freaking beam.

My coworkers  and I wouldn't have any problem sitting on a beam like those  guys in that pic.

However, I'd be shitting my pants if I was anywhere near that beam without any surrounding walls. :(
