Title: why all the kettlebell hate?
Post by: johnnynoname on July 11, 2010, 03:29:37 AM
Before I start, I want to say that i'm not a believer that kettlebells are the "say all and end all" when it comes to fitness.  So, don't confuse me with one of those "New Age" trainer-types who use nothing but kettlebells and exercise balls and denounce any type "old school" training protocol

I notice that there is a bit of "kettlebell hate" on here

Now, I agree that the fact that kettlebells are going "mainstream" is a bit much as of late.  I mean, they have been in existence for a LONG time and now a bunch of johnny come latelys are pretending they are innovative cuz the just discovered them now.

However, that aside, I believe that kettlebells (done either in a circuit or Tabata style) are a more effectivce cardio workout than the tried and true " 2 one hour sessions a day on a treadmill walking on a very slow incline"

Chime in on this

then again, what do I care- I'm just gonna watch porn and hit on girls on plenty of fish all day long......then i'm gonna play "red dead redemption"

....then, I'm gonna go tanning

...oh, and I have to TiVo "To Catch a Predator" on MSNBC tonight

...Fuck, it's sunday- I have to go see my mom then go to my dads and stay in there "good graces" so i can stay in their respective wills

oh, yeah- talk about kettlebells

I used to refer to them as exspensive dumbbells but they have their place in training.

People hate KB cause they don't know how to use them and the personal trainer touting them right now all act like they just discovered something new. Its a lame tactic.

When I sold them, 90% of the people who came in to buy them had no idea they had been around for years...

I, 1000%, agree with this

my hairy uncles were using kettlebells back around WWII and these homo personal trainers pretend they discovered something new

btw, i see the irony in the above statement

Everything old is new again, and they are doing a old tactic in repackaging something. Don't know how good it would be,  but I'm pretty good on selling people on things, I would just say, "This is a 'old school' way of training. Old school is synonymous to "hardcore", or "realness", so people think that they are getting the realness, the rawness, of the 40s---50s. Kinda like fiberglass bodied hotrods.

i think it is because most of the exercises can be done with dumbbells.

It's true, we have some knucklehead trainer at our gym who is actually teaching KB classes....he just learned about KB's about 6 months ago and now he's an expert. Now I see some of "students" with scap and shoulder problems not to mention bruised up wrists. Go's back to the article I posted on blog that Vince G. had a fit over.

I've never used them, but I would like to try them sometime for some intense cardio session.

For muscle building I'd much rather stick to the basic weights (dumbells and barbells) and some machines.

They shouldn't be used to take the place of DB's.

i agree 100 percent

I'm saying that kettlebells (especially when used in a tabata circuit) is way better cardio than the slow paced, long duration treadmill walks that are the staple of many cutting phases

btw, Coach I don't expect you to agree with me as you have stated that you don't care for KB's anyway

Not really but we do use them for some basic movements like double swings, single arm swings and turkish get-ups. Usually incorporating them in some kind of energy system circuit once or twice a week or so. We always do metabolic training at the end of the weight workout and when we don't have time for sprints, prowler or sled work, we will do a tabata.

lol at "energy system" work

I know Christian Thibideau uses that term

So, do you get to use that term instead of " cardio" when you get your degree in Strength and Conditioning, right?

Wrists, shoulder (labrem) specifically, low back. I'm only talking high rep movements and mostly over use injuries.

Any exercise can cause injury if done wrong. Wait until one of your douches drops a tire on his ankle or sprains his wrist shaking those ropes..........then will those will be too dangerous to use? ::)

I haven't read the whole thread yet but wasn't dumbbells invented as a replacement for Kettle bell? What advantage does a Kettle Bell have over a dumbbell?

KB's are good for cardio, fat loss and abs.

Also that guy doing the KB jerks has clearly trained for it. Of course none of us could do it. You may as well have put a video of a speedskater or a trapeze artist up.

A barbell is good for cardio, fat loss and abs depending on how you use it. What can KBs do that dumbbells can't.

I've never thought about getting pairs of kettlebells but i have 4 at home ranging from 18, 22, 26 and 28kg, I often use these in my shoulder workouts and use them alone to work my shoulders and do alot of lunging with them, they are very versatile, often easier to use than a dumbbell for certain things because you can rest them in the palm of your hand without worry of slipping, although cleaning two together and getting tired towards the end of a set it looks like you'd have to be careful not to crunch your thumbs between the handles .. ouch. Cool thread thanks for the videos chaos!
