Consumer Center - Whether you want to shed unwanted pounds, build muscles, or fight the aging process, some protein drinks tout that they're a scientifically advanced way to quickly achieve those goals. Muscle Milk's website says one of its products is "designed after one of nature's most balanced foods: human mother's milk."

But is that how you should get your protein? Consumer Reports conducted an investigation, including tests at an outside lab of 15 protein powders and drinks. Multiple samples of each were evaluated for arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead.

The Consumer Reports investigation found that some of those drinks can pose health risks, including exposure to potentially harmful heavy metals if you drink them too frequently. ABC 27 Talkback:

Three drinks were of particular concern: the EAS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake and two Muscle Milk powders-the Vanilla Crème and the Chocolate. Consuming three servings a day could give you more arsenic, cadmium, or lead than health experts think is advisable. At high enough levels, all of those metals can have toxic effects on several organs in the body.

Federal regulations generally do not require that protein drinks and other dietary supplements be tested to ensure they're safe, effective, and free of contaminants.

Consumer Reports says a balanced diet is a better, less expensive way to meet your daily protein requirements, with foods like milk, eggs, and grilled chicken.

Then who the hell is supposed to test them? I sure as hell don't have a lab in my basement, hell I don't even have a basement!

Designer Whey one of the best.

I've been using true protein for awhile now, and I'm really happy with them.

ive gotten great results from whey protein shakes, just because their not tested for safety doesnt mean their harmful. There are drugs and vaccines approved by the federal government that contain mercury, formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals that go into our bodies. Maybe the federal gov't not being involved is a good thing.

Except that some of the ones C.R. tested showed that they contained amounts of chemicals (arsenic, lead )that health experts tend to believe is not adviseable.  I'm not a big government kinda guy, but I do believe someone should be testing products we consume other than the distributer of the product.

I honestly don't like my gov't getting all up in my shit, especially my food.  It's good to have a 3rd party though, like CR, to shed light on the subject.  I wonder if they do requests.

I've always been a big fan of your take on nutrition, but no showing a client is unacceptable, no matter what your rationalization.

I'm hoping you're going to give him a session free of charge.  This stuff can easily kill what could be a lucrative business.

So obviously you don't necessarily get what you pay for as far as quality goes. Muscle Milk is very expensive, hence why I've never bought it myself, though it tastes very good.
