Title: life question for you bros..
Post by: JOHN MATRIX on July 20, 2010, 11:05:47 AM
i have a potential job that i need to decide if i want or not. the good part is...i will make 3-4 times what i make now (still nothing impressive lol), and will be able to have a fairly nice lifestyle for myself. now heres the catch. it will be in a different city which i dont much care for, and will require me to sit on my ass all day long staring at a computer for 8-9 hours per day doing horribly monotonous, soul-killing 'office space' style work.
i despise this kind of work but the money would be a real life saver. what do you suggest based on your past choices?

Wouldn't do a job I hate for 3 times what I make.. as long as what I make pays the bills and keeps me in diet pepsi vanilla.

A bit of a cliche here, John, but go with your heart!

I've found out that that's about as deep as you can go when making important decisions.

There's a good song about that somewhere out there.

I think some guy by the name of Sinatra sang it in some dumb ass movie I wasn't in.

yeah i know, but i never want to be one of those typical 'get home from the job and start drinking till i feel calm then pass out in front of the tv until the next day it starts over again' type standard american working man types.

give it a shot - you might like it

a new job in a new city is an exciting opportunity

also, save the extra money in case it doesn't work out

If the job won't make you happy the money won't either.  At first you might be jacked to have more cash, but if in a month you want to hang yourself from boredom then it's not worth it.

Can you return to the line of work you do now if it doesn't work out?  If so, why not give it a shot.

On the flipside, I had a job straight out of college and grinded my way thru 1 year.....it sucked ass and I was one of those drink after work every single day guys.....

i had a job similar to this recently and yeah i wanted to hang myself, i remember being completely drained every day, tired after work, every morning, etc..didnt feel like lifting...but thing is this one will pay much more and i need that right now. so yeah, maybe ill do it for a while and build up a nice savings, then move on...
maybe i can just go the coffee/Stimulant route like most people and snort some lines of NOEXPLODE every morning and at lunch?

The REAL question you have to ask yourself is "Will it interfere with my posting on getbig?"

yes showstoppa this is a heavy consideration, as it will cut down on my posting time severely :-\

There is your answer John. What may happen is you will make more money and buy more things maybe more debt but you will hate everyday of your life been there and done that. You will want to quit the job everyday but if you are in debt you cant so a trap.

3 to 4 times your current salary?  Unless that new city is Detroit or Cleveland you should give it serious consideration.

Be very careful of this. I have coworkers who when they first joined spent all of their money on big trucks and partying. On top of that they now have families, no savings, and all kinds of bills. Even though they now hate their job they are in too deep and don't have the skills to leave yet maintain their lifestyle. Plus they rent housing because they didn't save enough for a downpayment on their own place. Instead it will take them forever to raise that money since most of it goes towards bills and beer.

probably depends on how much you like your current job.  if youve got your dream job already, then its not worth it..... but if you dont even like  your current job anyway then go for it.

A very large percentage of that is tax free as well.

I have a friend who went over there without much in his bank account at the age of 22 a couple years back and he is sitting on well over 100k right now...not bad from a 24 year old.

They also pay for 3 or 4 plane tickets to anywhere in the world you want to go a year. He has already has his share of some good looking females from Prague, Thailand and a few other spots.

Honestly I don't think it really would even require that much experience to land the job, I really think a few months prior experience could get you into the door.

Out of his "convoy crew" or whatever you want to call it there is about 30 drivers total and only 7 or 8 are from the United States. The remaining drivers are from Pakistan, parts of African and some other countries but he said those drivers are SO terrible that he has had to literally get out and show them how to back up a trailer or shift gears. Some of those same drivers have been known to flip their trucks because the embankment is so steep on their roads out there.

He has been fired at with guns but most of that is by young Iraqi's whose aim is notoriously terrible and the trucks are so well armored that it pretty much either misses the truck completely or bounces off the bullet proof windows. He also had a road side bomb go off under a truck directly in front of him but it was a pretty weak and did not do much damage.

Make no mistake alot of those towns want nothing to do with foreigners and they will literally shut off EVERY light when they see a convoy of trucks pulling up but my friend almost loves the adrenal rush. The last time I talked to him he was trying to get transferred to Afganistan where the money is better and the violence is also at a higher level.

If you really were interested I would check out these truck driver forums and look up the big companies over there like Haliburton, although there are also a few smaller outfits that are always hiring as well.

Take the job you pussy. Fuck, our grandfathers used to do hard labor all day and not bitch a second.

I used to have an extremely exciting job, and basically moved into an office position were I'm on my ass for 12 hours sometimes.

I don't give a fuck because its twice the pay. I have so many hobbies and things I do outside of work I don't care that my job isn't ''fun''

I put my time in and get the fuck out.. Its just a job. Jobs are meant to make yourself money, not be exciting. I go home and have my fun, and enjoy the things I couldn't without this job.

Take the new salary but live at your current level and bank the savings.  Give yourself 18-24 months to build a nice nest egg.  When you start wanting to live at your new level or you find yourself buying shit to make you happy enough to keep at it...stop, quit and move on...or take that money and vacation for 6 months in Costa Rica or Thailand.

I'd do it.  Money is awesome, So what if its a little boring, its your job, thats why you have a social life, and in this tough economy the opportunities dont come that often!  Take the job.

I've worked in the same place for the last 5 years and I love what I do, but I probably wouldn't do if it didnt pay me well and didn't give me great benefits.

So take the job AND go workout at lunch - go for a walk on breaks - and the fact you are sitting all day will be a none issue.

Different questions should be answered. First, how much do you like your current job and does it offer any new perspectives in the future? Second, can that new job be a stepping stone to something better? Some jobs might seem terribly boring but there are sometimes ways of making them more interesting if you can get more responsabilities (which also means more stress often). One thing is sure: if you intend to do it just for the money, try not to depend on it by getting loans and shit that will tie you to the job for God knows how many years.

Sounds like this new job will be catabolic to muscle tissue.

Not to mention he said it would interfere with his getbig posting, so I don't know what we are debating here...
