Title: STFU!!!Crapple - Jailbreaking,Unlocking iPhones Now Officially Legal in the US
Post by: GRACIE JIU-JITSU on July 26, 2010, 09:31:19 AM
The Monday morning, the Associated Press announced much to the delight of the jailbreak/modding community, that iPhone owners "will be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple." Although the questionable "legality" of such actions never inhibited many from doing so, the federal government is making it officially legal under new rules announced just today.

So where did this decision come from? While it may seem utterly arbitrary this Monday morning, the decision to effectively authorize "jailbreaking" comes as one of a few important new exemptions from a federal law "that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works." Every three years, the Washington Post reports, the Library of Congress "authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material."

ABC News reports that additional exemptions will:

— allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.

— allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws.

— allow college professors, film students and documentary filmmakers to break copy-protection measures on DVDs so they can embed clips for educational purposes, criticism, commentary and noncommercial videos.

— allow computer owners to bypass the need for external security devices called dongles if the dongle no longer works and cannot be replaced.

I didn't "jailbreak" my phone but installed a firmware change to allow tethering (a pre-existing feature) following an apple update I guy had access to voicemails.

I'd still love to have the tethering capacity but do occasionally get a useful voicemail. I'm not paying those assclowns $4.99/mo when it cost them nothing, is built into the phone anyways and is free in Europe.

i was looking at the iphn g4...and ATT had tethering for 45$ mthly.  didnt someone say you can do that for free?  how does that work and what are the benefits?  i have a blackberry at the moment.

Tethering allows the phone to be used as a modem. Basically if you're someplace with no internet the laptop will be able to use phone minutes for looking at porn or checking the occasional e-mail.

Can't remember where I got the firmware from but it became useless when the update blocked voicemails, anyways.

If you want your voicemail back, and keep your tethering. try this.

1- IPCC file. you can change any time you want using itunes.

2- Or create a new profile on your iphone "mobileconfigs"
Go here using your iphone and create one. http://www.benm.at/2009/06/13/helpbenmat/

3- Or jailbreak the phone and get mywi or pdanet.

I would suggest mywi or pdanet.

Thanks, Gracie!!

Irony is I don't even need the feature much. It just burns my ass Apple/ATT want to block features on a phone I paid for and then get $5/month for the one or two times a year it would really come in handy.

android is pissing all over the iphone.

however unlike the iphone - to get the most out of android you need a brain and an ounce of tech intellect.

this may also change in androids favour with the release of android 3.0 aka - gingerbread. As it has been reported this will make android more streamlined and drastically improve the ui/ue.

gingerbread is due for release just before xmas this year - with numerous superfones from motorola, htc, samsung, etc planned for release around that time with gingerbread onboard.

as it stands at present the most powerful phone you can currently own is the samsung galaxy s. As it has the fastest processor, the fastest gpu, most on board memory, the best screen - in terms of colour, brightness, ability to read in sunlight, and power consumption,  and uses the most advanced touchscreen sensors known - allowing up to 5 simultaneous touches to register individually even when overlapping.

if you want a phone - its the one to buy  ;)

Possibly the most moronic thing Ive read, hardware is NOTHING without software, and the difference in power between the Galaxy s and Iphone 4 is minimal at best. Its come down to the point in PC's, laptops, tablets phones etc where the hardware has gone way above what the software calls for 99% of the time so its mainly down to the OS and UI these days to impact the user experience.Anyone who has used Android and OS4 and can tell me with a straight face that Android is the more pleasant experience obviously rode the shortbus to school.

hahahahahahahahahaha minimal at best hahahahahahahahahaahahah a

i did say you need to have tech intellect to get the most from android - clearly we know which camp you fall into.

also regarding your statement: hardware is NOTHING without software, well the galaxy s doesn't have to be held a certain way to make a call - hope this helps !

Both use 1ghz processors, both have 512mb of ram, the iphone has a higher res screen, samsung uses super amoled, iphone 4 has 32gb built in, samsung doesnt, iphone battery lasts longer, iphone has the better camera and video camera, iphone is the better built phone (noted by all reviewers), iphone has a gyroscope, samsung doesntSo please tell me where the samsung has better hardware?Ill give you it has a 4inch screen but above that im not seeing it.Also I was coding apps in dos back in the 90's so Im sure i could handle some "rooting" and a few cmd lines to get things running how I want, however why bother when the iphone works out of the box.

tethering is free with an unlimited data plan at T-Mobile. Unlimited Data is 30 bucks a month..

I used to have an Iphone, and ill agree that it's nicer device and a lot easier to work. However, for me An Iphone was no longer a viable phone for me. As i live in an Area where AT&T is having major network problems..

I have since moved to T-MObile and Android..WHile it's not not as good as I Phone in almost anything. However, it's growing by leaps and bounds..And i'm very happy with Android operating system, as it keeps getting better with each passing day.  It's very good to have choices.

Just buy a factory unlocked iphone off ebay and use whichever carrier you want, they hold their value really well and if you were to sell next year before the iphone 5 (or 4g, whatever they call it)comes out youd get back 80% what you paid for it at least.

do you think anyone will believe your fables ?

iphone has a 800mhz processor, a shittier gpu, and a gyroscope that works exactly the same way as the motion sensors in the galaxy - but thats ok if you want to believe there is some advantage to it being called a gyroscope.  ::)

better built phone ? it cuts off calls when you hold it normally hahahahahahahahahahahaha priceless

the galaxy s can use up to 64gb memory.

it does have a higher res screen though, i'll give it that. however that advantage will be gone very shortly with the release of the newest android phones that will come with HD resolutions.

galaxy s plays every video file you can throw at it including divx, avi, mkv, wmv,  all up to 720p - it can play these for 7.5 hours too. can the iphone ? without converting the file  ::) hahahaha fail !

it also plays more music formats including flac

the battery life is also better on the galaxy s despite your fables. check out gsmarena if you want proof.

all in all galaxy s > iphone 4

However, a decent i phone will run you about 500-600 dollars if purchase on ebay. I got my android phone for 118 dollars after rebate.  You can't beat that with a stick.  Plus android keeps updating itself.  I'm completely happy with these android based phones, and this is my second android phone after the original Google G1.

Another thing i like is not having to use itunez.
Plus i use sywpe, and i can type really fast.

True. Android is still feeling like beta. You can have an 8 core, 16 gig, 2 tb PC. But if you are running windows 95, It doesn't matter.

Ive always used iphones, till i switched to HTC (HD2) & realised how much of a TOY the iphone is. Great for entertainment, & thats about it. Not ideal for business. I need SERIOUS business.
Nothing much has changed, my wifes brand new iphone 4 is STILL a fucking toy. The antenna issue is an absolute joke.
While winmo isnt the ideal platform, & with android developing in leaps & bounds, the up-comming ver 7 looks promising. Specs for the rumored HD3 (if correct) should once again mop the floor with the iTOY4

# 4.5″ AMOLED screen with 1280×800 resolution
# 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
# 1080p HD video playback
# 720p HD video recording
# 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash
# Multi-touch screen
# Super-thin – just 10mm thick
# WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity. GPS,AGPS.
# 4G connectivity for for blisteringly fast downloads that are over ten times as fast as today’s HSDPA phones
# 1GB onboard RAM
# 1GB onboard
# 32GB external memory

# HDMI output for connecting to your HDTV or monitor

there is no fight over hulk vs thor.

hulk wins everytime.

it is not for debate.

slicksta - that phone looks great, its a pity it will be on windows phone 7  :(

the good thing though is if htc stick to their current strategy they will release a very similar version for android too within 6 months of its release  8)
