Epic Spotters.
The time to react is about 0.3 seconds, and that doesn't leave any time to stop the weight.

Holy shit - that's the first time I've ever seen someone actually lose hold of the weight on a bench press - before I saw the video I thought he would just fail to press it all the way to the top, but he literally dropped it!
-
His bench shirt saved him...
Odd how the one thing that he relied on to help him get up to that weight let him know, "you ain't got the goods" and at the same time...possibly helped keep the injury from being worse?

Yea, I was spotting a guy once who did that with 275 lbs on close grip. He was reppin it out with relative ease when he just let it go. It bounced off his lower chest and he made the coolest sound as the air left his lungs. :D
He left the gym immediately, never to return. lol

Still don't understand the whole bench shirt thing why not just bench normal.

To save the shoulders? Why not do it close gripped and/or take care of your shoulders?
To make it safer? Yeah right. Just better give up lifting all together if that is the attitude.
To make it more technical? Why, it should test your strength.
To have an extra challenge? Become a rocket scientist instead.

Ouch...I remember about 4-5 years ago at the Ironman when they had the strongman and bench contest Tiny Meeker had around 760lb on the bench and after lift off his wrist snapped.

Here's a very similar accident from the front:
.
On the flipside, here's Doug Young breaking a rib early on in a big meet, and still finishing:

sure u don't have much time to react however there hands should have been and inch from the bar at all times , i have saved spotted at several meets and if you are good at it you will catch it.. i never lost one and nobody ever got hurt while i was spotting

Yeah but if you don't expect it and it's a heavy weight it most likely slips right through your hands...

when i spot i expect them to fail everytime. you interlock your hands so it doen't slip through your hands. if you can't catch the weight then you shouldn;t be a spotter. i have caught near in the 900s this way. it was going back on the guys head to

hmmm I don't recall specifically asking you to explain.. For some reason
Anyway from my perspective shirts are pointless If you can't lift it raw... Well ... You can't lift it simple as...
If I attach attach a crane to 1000 barbell and press it does that mean that I can bench press 1000 ? It's just dumb. Just my opinion

Well I've competed in both raw and shirted and have had top numbers in both. I look at it like this if you dont like bench shirts compete raw there are divisions for both. Like I said if if people dont understand it someone trying to explain wont help. Its two different moves kinda like the high jump and the pole vault people wanted to go higher so they added a pole. People wanna bench more so they added a shirt.

For record I think pole vaulting is dumb too.... Shirted benching is like strapping a rocket to a 100 metre finalist back and he gets a time of 0.003 secs it's dumb Or have a benching competiion wher your allowed spotters a la king kamali who will pace there hands on the Bart from begging to end and pull while you push.
