Interesting point about how religions could be negatively affected if evidence of intelligent alien life was disclosed by the governments. I could see how this knowledge would cause a breakdown of morals and order in some people.
However I think the bigger question is would the governments really be able to suppress any evidence if aliens really wanted to be "discovered" by the mass public? If they've traveled so far to reach Earth their technology would be much more advanced and no Earth based government could contain whatever they wanted to be known. Unless these aliens possess a great deal of emotional intelligence and decided on their own that the public is not ready to know about their existence.
Perhaps they'd rather witness the Earth from a distance without interference and see how we develop independent of their technology. Perhaps they can live hundreds or even thousands of years and have lots of time to observe the curious development of Earth?

Exactly, that is the big hole in the conspiracy, if there is a race that is technologically advanced enough to travel light years to get here, what could the government do? And what would stop them from just invading and enslaving everyone?

I'm not even sure they are "aliens" in the sense that we think about it
For all we know they could be from another dimension or time travelers, etc...
For whatever reason they don't reveal themselves but every once and awhile we have this mass events like Phoenix and Mexico
I'm sure the US Military has awesome footage from in flight camera's that we'll never get to see
