Yep. I moved across the country once on a spur of the moment with no plan, job or anything. I was on holiday... enjoying myself and I thought "why am I not living here?" So I moved. :)

For me, it all worked out (I tend to land on my feet in any circumstance) but I would not necessarily recommend an impulse move for anyone else because it requires a certain personality type. At the time, I was teaching college; I quit at the end of the semester and moved over the summer. I took the fall semester off and hired myself out as an admissions consultant to kids at private schools trying to get admitted to the college of their choice. By the Spring semester I was teaching college again, but I kept up the consulting business for years afterwards.
I think moving impulsively as you describe requires two things: adventure and resourcefulness. I don’t think you should do it because you are fleeing a bad circumstance; you should do it because you want to move. There is a difference between these two.
A resourceful person will confront and solve a bad circumstance. A cowardly person will simply flee. If you are the former, you are the sort to land on your feet anywhere you go. If you are the latter, you may well find yourself in another bad circumstance and want to flee again. What will you do then? Do you see what I’m saying?

^^This is good advice.
If you can't handle situations where you are currently stationed, location is unlikely the culprit.
The real problem is probably YOU, and it's doubtful that moving will help anything other than provide you a new support network of people who are not yet tired of you pissing & moaning how "the world" has screwed you.

I really want to echo this. Lots of people like to complain about the circumstances they are in or otherwise lament that life has treated them poorly. I often laugh when I hear this rhetoric from Americans, most whom have no idea what real poverty, deprivation, or hardship is. I’ve had it rough before and that’s why I can handle almost any of the stuff most people complain about (money problems, toxic personalities at work, physical discomfort, etc.). Moving across the country with no plan is not my idea of a challenge.
Try leaving a war torn country… not speaking the language of your new country… and having to fend for yourself with a child in tow. Maybe throw in being a woman... or a minority... or having a physical disability too. That’s a challenge!
Most people need to toughen up! Americans have it easy. ::)

I kinda did when I moved to Hawaii. I went there in February or so of 1989 and on August 3 I moved there. I was booked on a Matlock and had a Taco bell commerical that following week and I left. I am very impulsive. We used to sit at home when I was in LA and all of a sudden just say lets go to vegas and we would just leave. I always leave things open so I can change anytime.

Yup - moved from the UK to Knoxville, TN....
Obviously, I had NOT researched the place ahead of time...

Had an argument with the woman I lived with in Belgium before she went to work one day. I wasn't happy to begin with but it was the last straw. I gathered up my shit and went to the UK. I have no idea what ever happened to her but I pity the fool who took my place.
