What are the handles on the top and that padding that runs along the top for?
???
-
the handles make it easier to get in and out and the pad is for when you whack your head doing the same thing... arthur jones was paranoid about being sued.

Are you serious? I've wondered about this every time I've looked at that big old bastard, I've had a million people ask me what they're for... ;D

Nice little fun facts here. Good stuff.

That machine is used for pre-exhausting the pecs you do the flye first which doesnt include the triceps (which is a weak link to chest training) then the press with no rest superset fashion. The peddle at the bottom is so you can go beyond failure by pushing with the feet for the positive rep portion then lower the weight slowly to continue in negative fashion to failure. A good machine.

Actually I think the foot thing was put there to help bring the handles forward because they were positioned so far back. You puched on the foot thing and it brought the handles forward
-
The handles at the top are used when you are doing pec deck with one hand. The padding is for safety to prevent someone tall from banging against the steel. This could happen if someone really tall sat in the seat at the highest position. Not the right position for a tall bloke but I guess Arthur put the pads there just in case knuckleheads misused the equipment.

Agreed. However you can push past failure by using the foot pad to do the positive and lowering the weight in a slow negative fashion as well.

Bingo! I loved that machine. Jones' also had a lat machine, not the pullover, that Gold's in Venice had back in the early/mid 1990's. It duplicated the lat pull down except it took the arms out of the equation and was full range. I mean, your upper arm literally smashed against the side of you face and ear. Nobody used it but me and I never see it around anymore. Pity.

I never used that one but there was a pullover and a pulldown machine where as you did the pullover first taking the biceps out of the equation then reached up and did the pulldown pre-exhaust fashion a good machine.

I actually have 3 old Nautilus machines in storage, the 90 degree bicep and tricep and pullover.
-
I liked that old pullover machine and still use the bodymaster version almost every time I train back.

At my old gym I used to have a pec machine that I had to push down with the feet, I really liked it. It really isolated the pecs and it made them "pop".

I do to, but I've never used it.
This one old guy uses it for a leg press.

Coach, you have to move the pads back about 4 inches on the biceps machine to make it much better. You never have pads under the elbows for biceps. You can damage the sheath that goes over the elbow joint from pressure. It is a simple process to weld supports and then the whole pad shifts towards the user and the elbows don't contact the pads. Puts the user in a much better position with the pad against his chest.
-
I think vince is right one armed pec decks... what a waste of time though.
-
Nautilus is on it's last legs btw just got sold for a song to one of it's distributers... Jones sold it at the perfect time he was no fool.

That pic isn't my machine, I just stole it from google to give an example of what I have in storage. You know I'm not big on machines or isolating on particular body part. I bought them for nostalgia purposes.

The ignorance of gym owners just about eclipses that of the typical musclehead.

Well considering I can get better results from my athletes out of my garage than a 10,000sqft gym full of machines has to say something. Nice try tho Vince!
-
Yeah, great for you. Another world authority who happens to run a small facility.
The Nautilus biceps machine is a good one. If you have the one that you do one arm at a time it is even better.

They raise your rent vince?

Expalin to me the advantages of running a large facility besides disassociating yourself with members you can't even remember the names of let alone chart their progress.
-
Machines are good to two thing, making yourself look pretty (narcissism) and making yourself better on that machine. Vince, a couple of weeks ago you posted one of the dumbest fucking things I've EVER heard in my 35 years of training. You said something to the effect of "I would have never invented such rubbish as barbells and dumbells" I will never for that, for someone who thinks they know something about training or "hypertrophy" that was incredibly ignorant and shows your TOTAL lack of knowledge!!

for the money....if i had a gym i wouldn't care what my members progress looked like....as long as they kept coming...
that the difference between a gym, and a training facility...
i don't look at your place as a gym at all...i see it as a training facility...

....And that's my point.

....And that's my point.
gyms were never meant to be anything but a money maker...training centers are actually there to help people achieve goals......the majority of people will never see the difference..

you kinda answered your own question here also..gyms are for nothing but narcissism...we are not a performance based species anymore.......the world has proven that.....its all about the look and glamour.....wether you, and i like it, or not...

Good point, that's why I specialize in what I do, if I have the reputation of training people to excel then my reputation should dictate my business, that's why I told Vince that I can get more results from my athletes out my garage than he can out of a 10,000 sqft gym filled with machines. But I totally agree with what you're saying. Most people don't know any better.

coach has dibs, but i don't think he wants it anymore. it's the old vertical type. he said wanted it i'm but not sure now. i'd give it away, but not gonna cover the shipping.

Can't see it on the phone Haz. Waiting for mt wife to give up the computer. (Bill pay day..15th)

"Machine only" workouts = Doing your whole workout while sitting on your ass.
Get up and lift some weights. Machines are good for certain things., Just not the "be all, end all" like some of these HIT fanatics / trainers push on everyone.
Jones was a fruitcake, who had his team of ball huggers, who would jump at anything he said, and they know who they are...
