Actually "Life" is nothing but constant death. You die 1 second every second, just try to make the best out of it.
-
Hmm, I guess that depends. Are you talking about the weightlifting part of our lives? Or other aspects of our lives?

Yes, from a philosophical perspective, this is very true.
I think the OP was trying to insinuate that certain lifestyles making it happen sooner. Drug addiction will speed up the process of death, if taken to the extreme. Obviously, any one of us can die in the next minute. However, the more riskier chances you take in life, the greater the chance of death being a lot sooner. I think the OP was getting at that.

DK, surely you are not a buddhist with a statement like that. A true buddhist wouldn't care what religion you are just as long as you are doing the "right" thing and are happy with that.
Freedom? We are tied to suffering, untill you realize that, you will never reach enlightment.
One last piece of advice; If you see the buddha, kill him.

Kids obviously give you something to live for. But that aside, aging is depressing as hell. All you do is lose. Loved ones die, family dies, friends die, if you don't die first. Lose your strength, athleticism, coordination to even walk right or see straight. Lose your looks, lose your energy and zest for life. Eventually can't make it to the gym and spend all day hoping your kids will pick you up from the retirement home to take you to that park. >:( Not much fun if you ask me. Shoot me once i hit 60

The key here is why people live unhealty lives, and fail to change? Is self destructiveness genetic?
-

how and where i am living right now is a slow, drawn out death, period. what you describe is the boat i am currently in.

You're right with that first statement, but i have a christian upbringing and thus cannot quite come over the bad habit of telling people that my religion is the best.
Second: you sound like you read too many books and have less practice. ;D

Yes and I also believe the people you(me, anyone) has in their life is slowly killing us.

Ahhh, just listen to Jay-Z's "Politic's as Usual", let it marinate...and the world become a far simpler place...we chose to make thing complicated.

Your missing a key point of evolution. It's a benefit to make wreckless decissions as long you reproduce. The most impulsive people usually have more children, so there trumping the restrained. It's survival of the children not the fittest.

Absolutely

agreed 1000%....started practicing about two years ago.....you are right...cuts out all the bullshit and lets you see things with clarity.....you walk your own path in life instead of being a follower.....its more a psychology of living than a religion per se
-
i agree, i like to call it a thinking mans religion - but i know what you mean about it not being a religion per se.
its a shame its not got the recognition it deserves in the west for the psychological aspect or how it trains you to master your own mind. It could help with so many addictions, pain management, stress, fears, anxiety, hate, etc etc
maybe one day after ww3, after the monotheist religious nuts have finished killing each other - buddhism will show everyone the true light - the light within us all.

I agree...you learn so much about yourself and you see the world and other people with absolute clarity....it's like seeing everything with a new set of eyes......helps to keep you sane in an insane world...my favorite Buddhist quote which sums it all up for me is:
"A great warrior can conquer an army...but he who conquers himself is the greatest warrior of all".

ALL that lives...just dies...

FP I have practiced Buddhism on and off for years surely a good path you have to live in the moment whatever age you are. What is your take on reincarnation? That is one I always struggled with.

Stallone does. Just means bigger forearms for him.

well reincarnation i can understand, in the sense you are being reborn to right wrongs, learn from mistakes and further yourself/soul/karma.
but its the whole karma thing ( no soul) that confuses me in relation to reincarnation.
being raised a catholic I've always thought that my soul is the real me, my thoughts, my deeds, good or bad etc. So I've always thought that karma was just an eastern term for soul - although Buddhists don't believe it is.
Buddha talks about past lives, etc i.e. with proper meditation you can see your past lives. This is because there is a link between these lives ( your karma)
However Buddhism is very clear that it is not your soul that's reincarnated but your karma, once you die you die, your personality dies, your thoughts, experiences etc are gone for all eternity. All that remains is your karma - your good/bad balance. That just doesn't sit right with me.
how can you improve your karma and reach enlightenment if you cannot remember any of the lessons you have learned in previous lives ? whats the point of being reincarnated if at the end of the day every life you live is basically a game of chance. hoping that in one of your lives you learn quickly enough to reach enlightenment in 1 lifetime. or just enough to be reincarnated on a higher plane, which makes it harder to reach enlightenment as the higher you go the more like heaven it is, the happier you are and the less likely you are to search for answers.
i wonder if Buddha taught about karma being different to soul because he wanted to get rid of the whole 'i' or 'self' concept, as we are all linked together, and the whole self/ego idea is false and leads ultimately to suffering.
but again the deeper you think about it, the deeper it gets. :)
