Seven-time Cy Young award winner Roger Clemens will be indicted for perjury for lying at a U.S. House of Representatives hearing about his use of steroids, The New York Times reported Thursday.
An announcement is expected to come later Thursday, according to the report.
Clemens appeared at a hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in Feb. 2008, repeatedly denying that he had ever used steroids.
His former trainer, Brian McNamee, also appeared at the hearing to repeat allegations that he had personally injected Clemens with steroids.
Clemens accused McNamee of lying in order to avoid federal drug charges for steroid distribution. Clemens sued McNamee for defamation, but the lawsuit was dismissed in Sept. 2009.
Clemens, 48, last pitched in 2007 for the Yankees, capping a 24-year career in which he won 354 games. His 4,672 strikeouts rank third on the all-time list.

So glad that our economy is back to 100% and the wars are all over so we can now focus on the really important stuff like steroids in baseball.
-
The guy's a friggin LEGEND, I can't believe they're coming after him for this bullshit, most of the guys going after him were probably childhood fans of his.
f*cking pieces of shit.
Funny how no one went after Carl Lewis in the 1988 Olympics when he failed the drug test for epo and steroids.
-
if any cop, any detective, any lawyer, ANYONE with the ability to gaffle you, ever asks you anything---
Just say one word, "Lawyer!"
People don't go to jail for the crime/deed, they go to jail for the cover-up. Stop trying to protect image, stop believing you're smarter than the po-po.
If Bonds, martha stewart, clemens and others would just zip their lip, they'd be fine.

While this great nation was at war, Joe Biden declared war on steroids in baseball.
His friends' lawfirms were made rich conducting Congressional investigations into the use of PEDs in "our national passtime".
1) Why is this a Congressional issue, you may ask? Because MLB is exempt for Antitrust Law, which is a deal MLB struck back at the turn of the 20th Century. Antiturst laws protect markets from establishing a monopoly. Even if this is a Congressional issue (which it shouldn't be), Biden picked an odd time to conduct the investigation.
2) If you were a player subpoenad to appear at a Congressional hearing, why would you even attend? You are not required to incriminate yourself. Exercise your 5th Amendment Rights and move on. Why, at the risk of being impeached later on, would you lie in your testimony?
-
Beautiful... and the witch hunt continues. We don't have any worse problems like murder, unsolved murder, the homeless, the poor and the econimy. Let indict Roger ::) ::) ::)

"I'm not here to talk about the past. I'm here to be positive about this subject. "

Seriously people what part of "lying to a grand jury" don't you get? It's not about that he took the shit it's about how he LIED. If he would have come out and said "yes, I took steroids" like Pettite did, this wouldn't be going on. Lets see, Pettite told the truth, it's in HIS past and he's still a pitcher for the Yankee's, Clemens LIED and now he's going down for it. FUCK!
-
Coach, I have two issues:
1) Why is Congress involved with steroids in baseball? Especially so close in time to the most heinous terrorist act to occur on U.S. soil?
2) Why did the lawyers of the players who used give such bad advice. McGwire sounded dumb, but will not see an indictment. Petitte admitted to his use, as did A-Rod (of course A-Rod said he doesn't think they helped at all--check his stats, they don't lie), but Clemens flat out lied.
But why was Clemens there in the first place? You are not required to testify. They can't make you talk. And if you do, make sure you are granted immunity before you incriminate yourself (and others).
Egos screwed this whole thing up. Clemens' ego would not allow him to keep his mouth shut.

The point is the government should have much bigger fish to fry then to worry and waste money about something stupid like this. Its like if a cop were to pull you over for speeding doing 10KM over the limit. Its bullshit.

It's ridiculous they are wasting time on this nonsense. ::)

Not only time, but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I’m on a federal grand jury right now; the term of service is nearly two years. We have the power to summon anyone, anywhere in the country to come before us. We are indicting people left and right. It’s fun! :D
Do not lie to the grand jury. >:(
-
Personally they should put MLB commissioner/owner Bud Selig on trial for putting this product on the field and deceiving hard working americans claiming the players were clean and going for the home run record cleanly.
-

Can't really answer that, but I agree they shouldn't be involved BUT regardless of whether they should be involved or not, you don't lie and dig yourself deeper.

Mark wasn't indicted because he didn't deny or admit to use it was just assumed he took it during that time.

Coach, I know that about McGwire. Like I said, he sounded dumb speaking about "moving forward", but he won't see an indictment.

I'm not disagreeing but the fact remains when he was called he lied his ass off.

Do not lie to the grand jury. >:(
And that's the ENTIRE point, DO NOT LIE.
-
Clemens no doubt lied.
And those of us that know anything about "sport" and "training" knew he was lying to a bunch of grown up children (Congressional Oversight Committee) clinging to the heros of their past, and to "America's pastime".
-
And that's the ENTIRE point, DO NOT LIE.
Fuck that. Lies make the world go round. Anyone who doesn't believe that is very naive.

Lying to Federal Grand Jury isn't like lying to your wife or girlfriend. You purger yourself in court and they find out consider your ass imprisoned with a new wife named Bubba.

The next time a terr attack hits your soil I will try to remember that because its far more important ::)

You can take that up with our inept government.

Lewis didn't lie under oath. As Jim Rome likes to say, the cover-up is always worse than the crime. Andy Pettite simply said he took them, in part to heal an injury of his, and he walked with nary so much as a slap on the wrist.
Clemens is getting popped for perjury, not anabolics use.
-
Clemens would have remained a legend by telling the truth. The public could care less that he took steroids, but instead of coming clean or staying silent, he insisted on being an arrogant liar. Stupid move.

There won't be a major terror attack on U.S. soil. "They" are going after the internet next. That's where the "terror" attack is going to take place.

so his 'legendary' status should give him immunity?
and steroids didnt become illegal until 1990, so lewis didnt commit any crime they could go after him for

So glad that our economy is back to 100% and the wars are all over so we can now focus on the really important stuff like steroids in baseball.
My thoughts exactly. Spend more taxpayers money on shit that doesn't affect my everyday life.

Anyone in his place under the gun would have done the same thing. You honestly think Andy Petite took gas to heal an "injury"? He bullshitted too. So did Mark McGuire, Rafael Palmeiro and i'm sure there are hundreds more including in the NHL & NBA who just didn't get caught. Big deal. If anything, give the guy a fine and thats it. I'm sure the government has more important things to worry about then this.

Mark McGwire was in the same position, but said "I'm not here to talk about the past". Clemens could have done the same. As stupid as it was for Congress to have steroid hearings, Clemens thought he was above the law and didn't have to be honest under oath.

in joe torre's book the yankee years, torre says clemens used to turn up the hot tubs as hot as they would go and then get out and have the trainer apply icey hot to his balls only then was he ready to pitch. these are the signs of a real man.....

What makes the Grand Jury so special we can't lie to em?
Lie 99.9% of time = dick liar
Lie "under oath" = jail
-
Coach, I know that about McGwire. Like I said, he sounded dumb speaking about "moving forward", but he won't see an indictment.
Agreed.
My take is that (and some ppl may not know this), POLICE ARE ALLOWED TO LIE TO YOU.
That point alone should facilitate the person saying "I will not talk to you" and getting a lawyer.
I have a Q... what if Clemens or McGwire simply said, "I don't remember"?

The "Ollie North" defense???
Nobody would believe them, but they could not indict.
-
Pathetic
-
Do not do anything that might require you to lie in order to save your ass. So if you do steroids, call the FBI and come clean, NOW!
-
this is why i dont watch baseball, bunch of fucking cowards
nfl players beat the piss out of people in clubs, get ripped on coke and booze, gear up like madmen, and still play the games, and no one gives a shit, or crys about their old records being broken.
you think they would ever put a * next to LT name for his sack records even though everyone knows he was coked out of his mind?
never happen in nfl,
but baseball, is controlled by guess who?
dirty jews
theres your problem

Classic with hunt . BUT if this doesn't worry the pros in bodybuilding they need to pay attention and LEARN from his mistakes in front of congress. Keep your mouth shut unless they make you testify and screw the concern about looking bad by pleading the 5th.
