Good clip Mal.  I have not seen one person, myself included say they don't have the legal right to do what they want to do.  However, there are realities at play and this Imam's plan is completely backfiring in how he has gone about this whole thing.

If this Imam and the Developer came out and said they are now going to include a shrine to the dead and and the dangers of radical islam, terrorism, etc, I think people might change their views on this.

But guess what, this plan is not being pushed by NY Muslims in needs of a mosque to pray at it.  Its a in your face type of thing that people are revolted by.

i would agree with that

i would agree with that

If this Imam gave a huge press conference and said he has heard all the voices and now wants to include input from the 9/11 families in some ideas to make it more open to everyone and explained that the site was not intended to hurt people and that it came across differently than he had hoped, but that they have dumped millions into the place already and can't move it due to legal obligations, etc, I would totally respect that and try to keep an open mind.

But I do not see that happening.

yeah, even palin admits they have a legal right now.

at this point, it's simple.  Palin, newt and reid want to restrict the legal rights of americans because of emotion.

Sorry, but that's not enough of a reason to wipe your ass with the constitution.

if the ppl break a single law, you ship their asses to gitmo and leave them there.  But if they follow the law, sorry, the constitution comes before feelings - washington and jefferson said so.

Who is for restricting anything?  People asking them to voluntarily move it or at least meet with the families to try to make an accomodation.

I can scream at the top of my lungs outside of your house about Obama on a soap box all day.  If you come out and ask me to tone it down or move down the street are you trying to restrict my rights?

if ya broke noise ordinances, or were a public disturbance, then you'd be restricting your own rights.

if you just wanted to be annoying, that would be your right.  it would be a sucky couple of hours in this 97 degree heat, and I'd definitely pour sugar in your yard at night so the fireants would ruin your day ;)

As much as it'd suck, it's legal.  I'm disgusted by the idea, just like you.  But i have to defer to the constitution.

240 keeps claiming that the constitution grants one the right to build a house of worship anywhere and anytime they want yet has spent 2 weeks now ignoring any post asking him to show where in the constitution that's stated.

He's a master of spin.

You'd have better luck talking to a wall than these people. They've honed in on a single point that no one is arguing yet they think that if they thump their chest and repeat it enough times it might actually prove something. Sad, really.

So what legal grounds does anyone have to stop this building?

So what legal grounds does anyone have to stop this building?

Plenty. They don't own the entire building. Their funding is subject to the laws and regulations that this country has set in place. Rauf has ties to the Turkish IHH, a known terrorist-financing organization. If any of their funding should be coming from terrorist groups or individuals on certain lists that aren't allowed to be funding anything in this country, then it can be easily stopped. And, on top of it, the people leading this project can then be subjected to a criminal investigation.

Pray tell, how can you start building something on a site that you only own 50% of? Or are we gifting these Muslims more free shit? ::)

Seeing as 240 has played deaf, blind and dumb for the last two weeks since owning himself, I'll ask you. Where in the Constitution does it say that someone can build a house of worship anywhere and anytime they feel like it? Keep in mind that there have already been about 2 dozen posts with examples of people who have had their plans for building various churches/temples/etc denied. So enlighten me.

Amazing how that simple question has been avoided for 2 fucking weeks now.
