A Florida church says it will go ahead with plans to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11, despite the city refusing to issue a burn permit, Orlando's Fox35 TV reports.
Indian Muslims shout anti-US slogans during a demonstration in New Delhi on Aug. 4 staged to protest the planned burning of a Koran by The Dove World Outreach Center in Florida.
But on Wednesday, the Gainesville Sun reports, Gainesville city officials denied the church a permit, saying the open burning of books is not allowed under the city's burning ordinance.
Interim Fire Chief Gene Prince says the church will be fined if it goes ahead with its plans, the TV station reports.
Mayor Craig Lowe, who has called Dove World a "tiny fringe group and an embarrassment to our community," backed the fire department's decision, the Sun reports.
Now, says Fox35, the church has issued an e-mail that says: "The City of Gainesville denies burn permit -- BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS."
"Things like 9/11, Fort Hood and the honor killings. ... These are possibly not isolated incidents," Terry Jones, pastor of the center, told MyFoxOrlando.com last week. "These are things that, if we don't stand up now, they can increase."

LOL @ this whole fckin distraction.
last week, the white house couldn't stop talking about the black/white NAACP comment from 20 years ago.
This week it's this silly community center.
All the while the economy sinks, more ppl are out of work.
The repubs and independents who COULD be waking up and getting the vote out for nov Dems and Thune in 2012 are too busy arguing about shirley sherrod and gz mosques to wake up about the economy.
Silly children lol...

dumb idea

Obama prefers this argument front and center than the economy 240.

Silly children? You can't shut up about Palin and derail 99% of the threads about Obama on here with talk about her. You're no different.
I don't see why this Koran burning would be a big deal. In June, a mob of Muslims in Indonesia tore down a Christian statue after defacing it. Nary a peep from the MSM and apologists about it.

Good example of yet another country being ruined by radical Islam.

of course he does.
i think EVERY SINGLE TIME a republican leader is asked about this silly issue, he should say "this issue doesn't matter - what matters is the economy..."
instead, we have them arguing tic and tac about this silly thing which will never affect them. Just like last week with the NAACP thing.
I fall into the trap myself, so I'm not claiming to be any brighter than the rest of the lamebrains :) It's just funny to open the politics board today, and see 15 threads on GZ... and last week it was 15 threads on NAACP at the top.
Things like the economy aren't that big of news I suppose.

How many threads about the economy have you posted? And how many threads about Obama's handling of the economy have you posted in without mentioning Palin? I'll put the over/under on that second question at five.

Attention whores. Christians are used to burning books and occasionally people so nothing new here. Plus they hope to instigate corresponding extreme reactions from muslims. And muslims usually don't react kindly when some "infidel" defaces their religion (beheadings, burnings, jihad, bombings etc)

Islamic Radicals Threaten Suicide Bombings Against Gainesville Church
By Adam Kirk - Morning News Producer @ August 23, 2010 5:28 AM Permalink | Comments (5)
A Gainesville church plans to go ahead with the burning of the Muslim holy book on Sept. 11, despite threats of bombings and the lack of a permit.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Terry Jones, pastor at the Dove World Outreach Center will call for Sept. 11 to be an "International Burn a Koran Day."
However, the Gainesville fire department has denied a permit for the event.
One jihadist website vowed to conduct suicide bombings in Florida to avenge the Koran burning, while others predicted an increase in terrorist recruits as a result of such actions.
"By Allah, the wars are heated and you Americans are the ones who...enflamed it," says one such posting. "By Allah you will be the first to taste its flames."
Jones said the radical threats confirmed his views of Muslims. "I can understand that they would be offended. I think their reactions--violence, threats, murders terrorist attacks--that only reveals the true nature of Islam which needs to be revealed," he said.

They probably all have rifles - so suicide bomber vs. goober with .308 Deer rifle = dead scumbag 200 yards out.

This is a perfect example of the glaring differences between Islam and other religions. While you can argue against burning books, no one is being physically harmed by it. Muslims, on the other hand, feel the need to blow shit up and kill as many people as they can anytime they feel slighted.
One burns books and the other kills people.

This is no simple book burning, and one cannot reduce "Christian" nutjob extremists to mere book burners.
Those who would provoke in anticipation of a certain reaction, are just as guilty as the radicals who react, and are every bit accomplices to the crimes that subsequently ensue.
Bush spoke often about a crusade, and it is well underway, whether we choose to recognize it or not.
Eric Prince, owner of Blackwater (Xe) considers himself as, and he may possibly be, the biggest crusader on the planet.
You have to see the first video on this page

The seeds of religious hatred & intolerance were well planted & fertilized by the previous administration.
Thankfully, not all Americans are stupid enough, gullible enough, or unprincipled enough for them to take root.

Perfect example of why the Islamists are walking all over us and the rest of West. Oh my, we better not insult the Muslims because they'll start killing us. Meanwhile, they can do fuck all and we better sit there and take it! ::)
My point still stands. Christians burn books to prove a point and Muslims launch suicide bombings, usually killing innocent women, children and men.
-
This story is kind of funny in that really irritating kind of way.
Lets say this church is made up of nothing but a bunch of nut jobs, OK, fine. They want to burn some books, an expression of their beliefs, an expression that hurts no one. Offends some, sure, but it hurts no one. They are upfront about everything they're doing, nuts or not they're upfront and honest.
Enter the Ground Zero mosque, supporters demand this action is a free expression of their freedom of religion and thereby they are permitted to do as they please. Now the Imam is upfront about nothing, far from it, yet supporters hold to their support.
Am I the only one who finds this beyond ridiculous?

Victimized? Hardly. Tired of watching the western world pander and bend over backwards for people who give nothing but bloodshed and violence in return? Definitely.
I'm sorry that you're a coward and afraid of radical Islam. Thanks for showing us a good example of a dhimmi, though.

Hardly the same thing. Building a community centre & House of Worship, is a far cry from purposely denigrating, and destroying the religious symbols of another. That is provocation, merely existing isn't. Unless you are under the impression that those of certain religions should neither be seen nor heard?
-

I don't see much of a difference between this and when Muslims burn the American flag and chant "Death to Satan." I've yet to hear one person complain about this.

Both a huge collosal waste of effort, energy & emotion on the parts of both provocateurs & reactionaries.
Some people go nuts when you burn an American flag, Some people go nuts when you burn a Koran.

True but there's nothing illegal about doing either and denying one the right to do it is illegal. As long as someone is performing the action within the guidelines of the law, even if they're a lunatic, I just don't see the problem.

American lawmakers were so up in arms about people burning the American flag both at home and abroad that I think they crafted legislation making it illegal to burn an American flag. While I'm not too familiar with islamic law, ...I'm pretty certain the reaction of Muslims towards those who would desecrate a koran gives me a pretty good indication that perhaps desecrating or burning a Koran doesn't jibe too well with Islamic law either.
Rather than burning korans, bibles, or other books, ...maybe all these religious fundies could just jump in the big bonfire instead.
-

Legislation has been passed making it illegal to burn the flag but the Supreme Court has overturned this legislation more than once. I'm not saying that makes it right, the law is not always right simply because it's the law, I'm someone whose paid the price for that but nevertheless it is the law.
As for Islamic law, that really doesn't matter and in no way should it have any bearing on this or on anything done in the U.S. We're not under Islamic law and have no reason to abide by it anymore than we do German law. Which brings me to a second point, a bit of an after thought but still important, Muslims are here, fine, but they are here under U.S. law, not there own law...that should matter.

Hey, guess what? Sharia Law doesn't mean shit in the Western world!
When will you Muslims learn this? Your law does not supersede ours.

sorry hun, but if youre one of the few ignorant enough to think that this is meant to build bridges there is no point in arguing with you.
if though you agree with most including many many muslims that this is meant to provoke anger and is an intentionnally hurtful move...than how does it not apply to the bolded part?

LOL ya youre right they are just peace loving ppl who want nothing more to build bridges by building a mosque named the "cardoba house" 2 blocks from the place that radical muslims the same ones affiliated with groups they refuse to condemn killed 3000 INNOCENT PEOPLE...
ya youre right they just want to build bridges ;)
