Pay starts at around USD 100K for unskilled workers. Yes, all is paid for you. Its booming there.
Yes, all free food in the camps. Its not an easy life living in the camps, but for some guys they can make good money working there.
Let me know if you want to know more.

I don't know anyone working the mines personally but I think your figure is a little high for unskilled workers.
Long days, 12 hr+ shifts, on a fly in/fly out basis. I'd guess 60-80k $Aus.
Most mine workers are complete dumbshits. "Going to the mines" was pretty much their only option.

Dumbest thing that i have ever fucking seen and it really is!!
I use to work at the mines for Massey Energy in West Virginia when i was younger.
Hardest work that i have ever done but all my family has always mined and are very high up now. :) Hard work but very dangerous and yes, people do have college degrees that work down there because of the money and being a Red Hat is different from being a Black Hat. ;)
Best of luck to your friend 8)

Mining in Australia is not dangerous. Health and safety standards are really high and the mines are really well run.

You're talking about in the US, Doug. I haven't met any of them. I'm only talking about Western Australian mine workers. Seriously, they're another level.

bob i saw you in the gym today, still big as a house dude.

I understand that. If you choose to work in the mines, you are putting your life in the hands of your guys that you work with. ;) I got out of that and said, this shit is not for me, at all! I did it for a few months and having rocks fall on you as you put bolts up is not fun and having to eat your lunch on the fucking ground is horrible...It is a job that i took but i respect the hell out of those guys. I have been to Australia many times but just to surf or go diving but many miners in the U.S. wanna go mine in Australia. :-\ :-\ It never interested me and i never asked questions or met any of those guys.... :) I have met numerous guys who mine and have no education, at all but they make 65k a year. :) In West Virginia, it is their way of life and the women are like women of the 50's because we worked 16-18+ per day...Glad that i got out! 8) 8)

I've been working for an Australian mining giant, BHP Billiton, for the last number of years. I'm based in North America though. Despite what most people think, most of these mine jobs are on the surface. In addition, most of the underground work is automated and very safe. Huge misconceptions out there. It's not 1900. Safety standards are stringent. Companies have too much to lose if they don't keep safety the #1 priority. Most incidents are caused by inattentive employees that choose to blatantly ignore safety protocol. Fcuk I.T., natural resource sector is where it's at. Just my 2cents.
