My dad drops some winter hats and gloves down to the homless hostels each winter.

I give occassionally. Not all the time just when I consciously think about them. If I were homeless lying in freezing temperatures in winter I wish someone would give me a few quid to buy some vodka to keep warm at least.

Two bums are heading back to the alley after a fruitless hunt in the local rubbish yard, hungry and tired. On the way, they spot a cat on the side walk that's obviously been dead for at least a few hours.

The first bum looks at the 2nd and says, "Well, I'll be...how 'bout that?" To which the 2nd bum says, "No way. I ain't touchin' that shit."

The 1st bum shrugs, picks up the cat and proceeds to eat the stiff, cold meat clean off the bones. They keep walking back to their alley and are almost there, when he feels sick and throws up everything he had eaten just minutes earlier.

The 2nd bum says, "Now you're talking - nothin' like a warm meal."

That's great Tim.  Give them a crutch and an incentive to continue their poor behaviour.  If they don't have a physical disability, give them a mental one.  You still haven't explained why able-bodied adults living in the most prosperous nation on the earth need handouts.

It`s called human kindness and compassion for your fellow man Matt.

It`s not a sin to give a person a helping hand when they need one.

If you don`t know the answer to the second part of your post, once again,I must state that you aren`t as smart as you think you are.

Lots of variables, circumstances, and problems as to why some never recover..............in essence,it`s just about next to impossible for them to do so due to various issues/circumstances.

MattC's lack of empathy for those less well off than him is due to his autism.

God forbid that anything catastrophic should ever happen to Matt and he lost everything he owns....only then would he know the meaning of true desperation.

Like A Rolling Stone:

Songwriters: Dylan, Bob;

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you

You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now, you don't talk so loud, now, you don't seem so proud
About havin' to be scrounging around for your next meal

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be without a home
With no direction home, like a complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss. Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
Nobody's ever taught you how to live out on the street
And you find out now you're gonna have to get used to it

You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not sellin' any alibis, as you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say, " Would you like to make a deal?"

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be without a home
With no direction home, like a complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns
On the jugglers and the clowns
When they all came down to do tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you

Used to ride the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that he really wasn't where it's at
After he's taken everything he could steal

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be without a home
With no direction home, like a complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all pretty people
They're all drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all precious gifts and things
But you'd better take your diamond ring, down and pawn it, babe

You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible, you got no secrets to conceal

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be without a home
With no direction home, like a complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

What a warm soul. You'll make for a great Father.
I think what he's trying to say is the vast majority of homeless people who are generously given money will often spend it on cigerettes, rec drugs or booze rather then on food and clothing so they can get their life on track.

agressive, begging homeless people deserved to get shoved to the curb.

others who are just victims of circumstance, i feel bad for them, but there is a social system in place to help them.

we're all just a drunk driver or slip-n-fall away from losing it all and being mentally screwed up... if you were suddenly a veggie with 60 IQ, drooling and crapping, most of the ppl around you might disappear.

Spot on 100%. This is why I don't feel bad for the able bodied homeless.
I give my pocket change to the guy in the wheelchair or some obvious disability that prevents him doing from minimum wage labor work.

There's unemployment, welfare...food stamps...etc. for those who are really down on their luck.

It's hard to get rich now a days but it's not hard at all to subsist on a minumum, functional level.

The only reason the homeless are where they are is thru constant poor personal choices, laziness and such. Drug and alcohol addiction is a personal choice one has to make, and maybe mental illness is in there as well, however I think most of the people who are 'crazy' simply have behavioral issues.
