Title: rep ranges --- were sets invented because 3-4 reps were not enuf exercise?

..and to get more you did more sets?

Then people got carried away?

You need to partition the workload into smaller pieces that you can go at with a certain/required percentage of intensity.

You could increase your strength with it, but it hasn't fared well for bodybuilding purposes. Of course, thoes reps have to be heavy and progressive.
