Sorry in advance for the lifting related topic. I'm looking to buy a set of those adjustable dumbbells to work out at home. I've seen the bowflex ones, and they only go up to to 90 lbs which isn't ideal but I guess it would do. Does anyone have any experience with these or the alternatives?
thanks

That's what she said. Ziiing.

Never been a fan of adjustable dumbbells. IMO just buy a dumbbell rack and rubber coated hex dumbbells at a pair of two at a time. Don't need to be rubber coated by those or nice. I bought mine at academy.

I would, but I'm keeping them in a relatively small apartment so I only have a corner of my bedroom to dedicate

You can fit a small rack in the corner too. But I guess adjustable dumbbells make sense in that case. But if you don't have the room, just hit the gym.

3rd one down....
lets you use your olympic plates, you can put 150lbs on there if you have enough 25's no problem. used to have a set of these and they are great.
-

Well, they're about 16 inches long each no matter what weight you select which hinders your range of motion on some movements (like chest, shoulder press). They just feel a little awkward. I don't think they go up to 90lbs EACH. Can't upgrade. They'll run ya $300-$400 bucks, plus another $150 for the stand. They're okay if you're limited on space and aren't looking for something super heavy. I'd try them out at a store first before making a purchase.
-
I have a pair of adjustable oly dbs. It's a good way to go if space or $ is limited. Big plates would limit your ROM but I find 7.5kg are ok.
I've got fixed dbs too so mostly use the adjustable ones for benching and overhead. I put some hooks on them and hang them off the bb in the rack. Works really well for me.

I got a pair their a pain in the ass though. You spend 10 minutes switching plates between each set. These switches seem pretty fucking sweet looking IMO.

Mine came with a threaded bored collar and an angled pin. ::) I swapped that for spring collars pretty quick and they haven't pissed me off since then. My dbs are always hanging by their hooks when in use so adding plates is pretty painless. Never really bothered me. Maybe it would if I tried the other kind and got spoiled by them.

Meh nothing wrong with old school. But I'd rather have swtichables than say an Iphone or any that shit. Atleast there useful and won't be outdated in six months, plus they make your room look pretty dam modern.

I have a $59 phone. Calls, text, pics. The teeniebobber girl that sold it to me literally sneered when she said 'Ya could get a flip phone.'
No cock for her!

Seriously Ironman magazine used to advertise and sell this cool "adjustable DB" blocks.
They seemed like a great buy and saved on space.

Your shop really exists? I thought that was a joke lol.
How many saunas do you sell per month?

Since 2001.. ;D
I sell about 2 or 3 saunas a month most of the year. They sell much better in the wintertime surprisingly and I'll sell about 10-20 of them in a months time.

He doesn't have a shop or anything. They will drop ship. He takes the order calls them gets a shitty discount and the company ships out.

Show a photo of your shop. Last time you were operating out of a UPS Store. You are full of shit again. You got foreclosed on your first warehouse

I hate to give Goodrum any credit but I will here. At least the guy is selling actual BB stuff and not his used posing trunks like some pros who shall remain nameless. The posted pic of his shop ( recent post) is pretty funny, even Goodrum would laugh.

Sounds like a nice plan, doesn't it? Making money with little to no effort.
-
Iron Master or Power Blocks. They are the only choices.
-

Yes it is a great plan. Best way to do it. Low overhead, you don't spend any of your own money. The onky problem is you don't any where near what you would make if you could buy on volume and get a bigger discount. There is no reason why anyone can call a company and get a discount the same as Goodrum. It is very easy to do. The reason I did good at my supplement shop in Honolulu is because I bought at distributor cost. My profit margin were higher. hell if you knew how to do it you can get them for free (the dumbbells) Nautilus sent me 4 sets of their Powerblocks (i think that was the name). They were the heaviest they went. I only asked for one they sent 4. So you know what I did. didn't pay a dime for them. This is something anyone with any talent or athletic ability can do. Sell yourself to the company and you won't have to payu for shit. If Goodrum was anything but a loser he could get shit done but he isn't so he can't. Never buy from someone who can't get you a better deal than yourself.

Kind of a personal question, don't you think? OOH!

No Keith, I have a warehouse. Half of the items I stock directly because it would cost too much and the other products such as the Body Solid & Cap Barbell are Factory Direct.
At one time everything was drop-shipped but I've moved on since then because I can order a pallet of stuff for dirt cheap and only have to sell 1/5th of the products to break even.
-

No, those are the heaviest adjustable dumbbells I carry. I did carry the Powerblocks brand up until last year but they cancelled every distributors agreement and now have an in-house direct marketing strategy. Dumb fucks screwed themselves and that's why everyone is getting Bowflex dumbbell now because they do sell to other distributors
Big seller right now is the vinyl coated Kettlebells now due to the recent demand on Kettlebell training.

Goodrum, I am going to give you credit for having an actual equipment business. I don't care about every detail of it, you are doing something real and that is cool.

so after I read the whole thread, do you store some of this stuff in your house Vince, isn't that like tons of stuff, or do you have a warehouse you put it in and pick it up from there and ship it fedex?

I don't keep anything at my home. Its a warehouse facility that works similar to a UPS store. All of my products are stored there and I pay a flat fee for storage, fulfillment, handling per item, and shipping expenses. Pretty much a fulfillment center.

The only "fulfillment" center I ever went to had this big Asian Massage sign on the front???!! ;)
Good luck with your business there Goodrum.
At least you live and work in the gym industry rather then just talk about it.
I know I bust your balls at times, but I honestly think you have a real passion and love for bodybuilding.

I check prices once every 2 weeks and either raise or lower them to compete with others so you'll should not be surprised if you use Google shopping for example and find that I'm the lowest priced for a number of items. Some people will contact me to see whether I'll match or mark it lower and I usually do that as well.
Buying direct doesn't garrantee that you have the lowest price. For example, the Air Climber by Brenda Dygraf is 129.99 plus 18.95 shipping when bought directly because of the infomericals however I sell the same machine without the retail packaging for 99 bucks with free shipping

http://caliberfitness.com/proshop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=632
All I did was contact the manufacturer in China and bought a pallet of the Air Climbers machines and I got them for practicaly highway robbery because I kept their generic packaging. A lot of products you see on TV infomercials are nothing more than a dressed up product with retail packaging and advertising and a huge markup. If you know who to call (and I do after running this business for years) then you can get the unlabeled leftover stock they have for real cheap. Then I can sell tons of the product because the advertising has already been done.
That's just one of the many things I learned over the years in this business.
-
what brand are they?
they don't have a brand, just generic spinlock extra long dumbbells - i think they are 18" long.
with the pro style slim weights you can get 6x5kg plates on each side - the dumbbells themselves weigh 3lbs.
are you in the uk ?

Wife purchased them for me about 9yrs.ago for my birthday... Love them! Never had one problem.A bit pricey, but not by much,in comparison to the other dbell sets out there...But definitely one of the best.. Hope this helps Stu..
