Title: UK Health Care Stats
Post by: Arnold jr on September 17, 2010, 08:22:43 PM
When talking about the new Health Care legislation I think it's important to remember much of it is modeled after the British system. No, it's not apples for apples but it's close enough and obviously the plan is to get to that mimicking level.

"If I were designing a system from scratch, then I'd probably set up the single-payer system but making that transition in a rapid way, I think would be very difficult...Over time it may be that we end up transitioning to such a system." -Obama

Another key note, one of the authors of the U.S. version is also the author of the UK version.

Some Random UK Stats:

*Good Hope Hospital: washing bedsheets cost 0.275 pence each (about 40 cents.) The solution, don't wash the sheets between visitors, just turn them over!

*Many hospitals ask patients to bring drugs in from home.

*2006 government press release states you would now be able to get a needed scheduled surgery in...6 months. This did help those who were normally waiting several yrs for major surgery but made the wait time for more standard procedures even longer. Across the board, wait times increased 20%...orthopedic waiting periods increased 143%.

*20% of treatable colon cancer patients at the time of discovery are considered incurable by the time treatment is finally available.

*NICE (National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence) it is their job to let you know in dollar amounts how much your life is worth living...how much it would cost to keep you alive. Their job is to set up standard rationing. For example, the drug Tykerb, which has been shown to delay the progression of breast cancer, it has been determined it is worth more than your life.

*50% of UK dentist won't accept patients using government health care. New contracts with dentist have been made, polls say 58% said changes made care worse, 84% said finding a dentist wasn't any easier.

*After universal health care was implemented and the waiting period became so long, the government issues a target mandate that patients must be seen in 4hrs. Even with the mandate the government couldn't hit this goal.

*Tens of thousands are held outside in parked ambulances for upwards of 5hrs or more. Why? Because the government mandated 4hr mark does not start until the individual enters the hospital.

*UK hospitals wait as long as possible so that by the time one is inside you have up to another 4hr wait...this gives the hospital upwards of 8hrs before they have to see you...success for the government mandate.

*For every patient admitted, the government pays the hospital $1,000, so once admitted within the guidelines of the 4hr mandate, they earn the cash regardless of the patient actually being treated, all that matters is they were admitted. The result, patients admitted who don't need treatment and released the same day, thereby increasing the wait time of those who need treatment.

British politician Daniel Hannan, supporter of Obama, opposed the war in Iraq: "You [the U.S.]should learn from our mistakes. I mean the biggest area where I could see you [the U.S.] making mistakes is on this thing of the nationalized health-care system. I mean, I hope that sanity is going to prevail. I know its been kicked around before and it hasn't happened. I love my country [the UK] even more than I love yours [the U.S.] you know, but God, I would love to get rid of our system and have something that puts patients in charge rather than putting doctors unions and bureaucrats in charge. That's the single biggest thing."

I don't know where you got this load of shit from, or just made it up yourself, but Obamacare is nothing like the UK system.  Not even close.

You're right and I said that they weren't the same but the goal is to get to that end.

As for the stats, load of shit? I wouldn't post a stat that's not an easily looked up fact.
