Title: Lawn Mower Question
Post by: Butterbean on September 23, 2010, 08:12:02 AM
Yesterday while mowing my lawn mower occasionally kept sputtering and eventually quit running.  The last time I mowed it ran out of gas before I was done w/the lawn.  Normally a full tank finishes the entire lawn.

Any ideas on what is wrong or is it just shot?

Thanks!

Couldn't tell ya what's wrong, but I think these guys are gonna need more info.  Engine size/type, etc.  Carburetor  ??? Air filter  ???

Running out of gas while running should not harm your mower - I’ve done it plenty of times.
Could be any number of things:

Perhaps you flooded the line by over-choking after adding more gas? If choked too much, just let it sit for a while & try starting it again.

When was the last time you replaced the spark plug or cleaned the carb?
How old is the air-filter?

Lawn mowers are not too complicated, so there aren’t many things it could be.
Did you buy a used (likely repaired) mower?
If it’s quite old, there’s a good chance its time may simply be up.

Not saying for certain, but I suspect it is coincidental that the problem manifested after running out of gas.

I ran out of gas the time before the last time I used it ...filled it up and finished.  This time it still had gas but quit working.

I bought it new in 2003.  Took it to the shop this morn and they gave me a "demo" of the kind that I have that is brand new to finish my lawn.  I know what they are doing ;D

Anyway, if it's over $100 to fix the old one maybe i will just buy a new one...my old one is too short anyway.

Sounds like a "win/win" to me.

You mean the deck isn't wide enough?

I could really use another 6 inches too.  ;D

You know, I've honestly never had one dirty thought while cutting grass.

I must be doing it wrong.

1. Turn off the turbo.

2. Do it by hand - good cardio.
