BREAKING: Rahm Emanuel to resign?
The Telegraph reports this morning that Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama's right hand, has revealed to Washington insiders that he will resign from his post by year's end. The reason for the resignation, the article alleges, is frustration over the administration's "unwillingness to 'bang heads together' to get policy pushed through."
Close associates of Emanuel have observed that the 50-year-old White House chief of staff is also concerned over possible "burnout and losing touch with his young family due to the pressure of one of most high profile jobs in U.S. politics."
Tensions between Emanuel and Obama have been well documented since Obama was sworn in January of 2009. The friction can be ascribed largely to differences in style, with Emanuel adopting a no-nonsense, pragmatic approach to problem solving mastered through many years in Congress, while the president prefers an idealized, measured approach.
One of the sharpest differences between Emanuel and Obama has been their radically divergent perceptions of how the American health care system should have been reformed. Emanuel is reported to have vigorously urged Obama to scale back his grandiose plan
in the heat of public antipathy toward the program and its high cost. Obama instead relied on the advice of long-time Chicago associates, David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett, a decision that recent polls suggest was wrongheaded.
How the shakeup would impact Obama's increasingly rocky presidency will be the subject of much speculation and analysis in the coming months. As one misstep after another bedevils Obama, eroding his once-solid support in the mainstream media, the public's perception of a man in over his head and left to fend for himself may further influence midterm elections that are already tilting in the favor of Republicans.
