Shaking, sweating, and hardcore vomiting. (From the wine, not from Getbig.) Doesn't happen often but I think I have a tannin allergy that comes and goes, so red on an empty stomach is outlawed. I never drink tea for the same reason (although cold brewed green tea seems ok).
Never hit me in a social situation, thankfully. :D

I get bad effects from white wine on an empty stomach actually. Nothing unbearable though. The one thing I can't have anymore on an empty stomach is Advil. I get bad migraines and I used it for years carelessly.

Sigh..only in the trailer park... then again you guys prefer your wine in cardboard boxes too! j/k

What is "expensive wine" to you?
No joking here, i'm trying to understand what's "expensive".

I remember during a taste test Traders Joes "Two buck Chuck" was rated bettr than a 125.00 bottle of wine

Yep. Some of these arrogant wine conisseurs have their heads up their asses.

I don't believe that, but i have to say that buying wine for the price tag is simply stupid.
I once had a colleague who spend a few hundred euros on some wine from the 1950's just to brag. Obviously, it had long turned into vinegar and tastes like shit (he admitted it).
You can get good wine for little money as well, but usually the REAL good wines are a bit more expensive. But this doesn't mean that every expensive wine is good as well, most of the expensive wines are expensive because they are limited in availability.
-
Having a glass of a nice shiraz right now. Very rare I imbibe at all.

Sorry that i was expecting a serious answer.

Donkeykong, look it up, it was I think a few years ago, it was a blind test.
-

Oh i believe you absolutely.
But you see, you have to understand the mechanics on this.
First, i doubt "Trader Joe's" has his own vineyard. So he probably buys someone's leftovers and sells them cheap. Even the big vineyard sell leftovers under a different label in some years, because they still make a profit with the wine that is still good, but not good enough for the "real" label.
Second, who was tasting the wine
Third, who was financing this event
So you see, it is not so simple.
-

I was going to start drinking a glass a day starting this month but I'm still going to look into it. I have not consumed alcohol at all since 2006 and not many times before that. When I was in the USA traveling back to Canada I purchased a $29 bottle of wine which would probably cost $80 in Canada. Socialism is awesome! We get "free" health care here! Because it's not like that costs $160 billion a year and we just end up paying for that in other ways. Oh and it's not like we have to wait in 6-18 month lines for routine procedures.
PS - American capitalism is the best!!
-
Never met a connoisseur who bragged about how much the wine cost. If anything, they're proud of how little it cost and what a great find it was.
-
I eat that shit up gooder den a mufucker
How much corn liquor can you down in one setting BDB?

You buy wine by the label, not the price tag.

I tend to just look for regions that are good for whatever grape. It's a hit and miss system but I rarely spend over Aus$30 on a bottle anyway.
I was driving through a local growing region (Swan Valley) for work for awhile and found some decent white blends for $10 a bottle by the case! Expensive wine? Bah!

Nothing against expensive wine, there are some small vineyards all over the world that produce great wine in small quantities for a price.
But you are right, for the "normal" wine drinker, you don't have to spend much money to get good wine. I like your regional approach, definitely a great way to buy directly at the vineyeard!

With Swan Valley to the north and Margaret River to the south, it's a miracle I'm not soused right now. ;D
Also had good luck with Hunter Valley whites at reasonable prices. You'll find them all over the world.

Quite awhile ago. "I'm not drinking fucking merlot!"
I remember those guys were total sleazeballs and I lol'd. I like to think I'm aging a little better.
-
The thing is you have good wines in most price ranges but you can't expect too much from really cheap wines (in France, under 6€, you get shit but over that price you start finding nice stuff though you really have to hunt for those). After, you have to know that the production system is nothing alike if you take for exmaple a Burgundy wine and a Bordeaux. Most great Bordeaux are overpriced according to me. Burgundy are even more expensive but the value for money is somehow better though you have to select carefully also. I'll take any day a 20€ bottle of Burgundy then a 30€ Bordeaux. Wine is a combination between the grape selection, the region and the producer.
-
I'm quite partial to a nice rioja, but now that the weather is getting a bit nippy it's all about a nice glass of port in the evening.
Or if out on a session, a pint of Guinness with a shot of port in it.

That's a nice selection of Bordeaux. First is Leoville Las Cases then Mouton Rotschild (1983 is a great vintage) then Beychevelle (from Saint Julien like the first), Calon Segur and Lynch Bages.

I'm French. So for all the downsides and the shit we're given (rigthfully) from others, we've got wine to forget.

And labels no one else can understand. ;)

Yes and it gets even more difficult when you go from one region to another. Bordeaux are quite simple though. You just have to figure from which part of Bordeaux it is to know if it's a majority of merlot or Cab Sauvignon whihc is used. Burgundies are a bitch. Côte du Rhône and Val de Loire are a bit easier. South Eats and South West are not easy to figure out either.

I realize how little I know about American wines. And very little about Australian and Sout African ones also. A little about Italian and Spanish though (had a Ribera Del Duero recently that was a killer). Awaiting a bottle of Penfolds Grange from an Aussie friend of mine.

I haven't had much French/Italian/Spanish/etc wine.
Hope the Ripper Shiraz (Australia) is cheap and pretty good ... Penfolds makes good wine...and sometimes buy a Chilean Red (can't remember the name) that is pretty good and cheap.
Had some Spanish wine named AN at a restaurant in Vegas. It was delicious.

Nothing wrong w/that...you like what you like. If it's cheap...all the better. :)
