i am notorious for going into a depressed state after morning cardio,...didnt really care because I gotta lose weight. Just curious what others think of this statement. Thanks
Yes – I’ve definitely noticed this too. After exercise (treadmill, jogging) – particularly if I haven’t eaten anything – I spiral into depression that doesn’t have any other cause. I believe it’s related to cortisol, and my brain not regulating it the same way as other lucky people who feel great after exercise. I’m dealing with this by being sure to eat a little before exercise, and by not exercising to the point of feeling “stressed” which turns on cortisol and which I think my brain doesn’t know how to turn off!

Not sure if I ever got depressed... but I do get very moody when in pre-contest, and usually very emotional!

You could be chronically depressed.

You could be chronically depressed.
I am bipolar and borderline personality disorder, diagnosed 13 years ago and on meds for it. I feel fine 99% of the time, but I always seem to get this delayed reaction depression after exercise. I actually found a website explaining possible reasons and am reading it right now

I feel more stressed when I leave the gym after a workout so I think I'm similar. I don't get that endorphin rush I used to get, don't know why either. :-\

You're hungry, low on carbs. Plan the food a bit better and it should lessen.

The most prescribed drugs in many parts of the world are drugs which alter serotonin levels. They are used in depression, generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia. The MAOIs prevent the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters (including serotonin), and therefore increase concentrations of the neurotransmitter in the brain. MAOI therapy is associated with many adverse drug reactions, and patients are at risk of hypertensive emergency triggered by foods with high tyramine content and certain drugs. Some drugs inhibit the re-uptake of serotonin, making it stay in the synapse longer. The tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) inhibit the re-uptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine. The newer selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have fewer side-effects and fewer interactions with other drugs. The side effects that have become apparent in recent times include a decrease in bone mass in elderly and increased risk for osteoporosis. However, it is not yet clear whether it is due to SSRI action on peripheral serotonin production and or action in the gut or in the brain.[37] Certain SSRI medications have been shown to lower serotonin levels below the baseline after chronic use, despite initial increases in serotonin. This has been connected to the observation that the benefit of SSRI's may decrease in selected patients after a long-term treatment. A switch in medication will usually resolve this issue (up to 70% of the time).[66] The novel antidepressant tianeptine, a selective serotonin reuptake enhancer, has mood-elevating effects. This provides evidence for the theory that serotonin is most likely used to regulate the extent or intensity of moods, rather than level directly correlating with mood.
Although phobias and depression might be attenuated by serotonin-altering-drugs this does not mean that the individual's situation has been improved, but only the individual's perception of the environment. Sometimes a lower serotonin level might be beneficial, for example in the ultimatum game, where players with normal serotonin levels are more prone to accept unfair offers than participants whose serotonin levels have been artificially lowered.[67]

Maybe your test levels are getting twords the lower end. Mine were quite low and I would feel like shit after a hard session of weight lifting or cardio.

Im deep into this forum and there are hundreds of people with the same issue. A large majority of them are over 40, and they have the same "delayed reaction" depression and anger after exercise, sometimes 1 day or even 2 days after. Im schocked how many people have this exact same issue.

For years exercise gave me a pretty reliable high, and then starting at around age 45, it all went to hell. In men my age and up, cortisol levels are permanently elevated, so any additional spurt, as brought on by vigorous exercise, could concievably cause moodiness by tweaking the amygdala

i agree...you might just be pushing it a little too hard...
eat a light protein and carb meal first...it will actually give you a better overall thermic effect and
you will feel a lot better
a caloric deficit plays games with your brain...you are trying to diet while your brain is trying to make
you eat and telling you to stop working so hard....our bodies are designed to survive, and putting this
stress on it is going against survival

I don't feel depress nor do I feel happy. I really don't feel anything at all. At this point in my life I am essentially emotionally dead. Give it time, you will get there too. We all will. It's either that or suicide.

That is unusual. Exercise is usually prescribed as a depression treatment because you feel good afterwards (usually).
