Title: 202 weigh in Debate
Post by: littleguns on September 30, 2010, 03:39:52 PM
Is it fair for a competitor to weigh in at 202 a day or 2 before the show and then carb up which makes them more than the 202 limit.

Kevin English is a perfect example......

Bob or anyone else?

I don't understand why there is such an upheaval against this practice all of a sudden. Weighing in a day or two before (to make a specific weight class) has been done at the Nationals since it's inception. This is how it's done in other sports such as boxing, UFC, etc. Has anyone ever wrestled in high school? College? It's done there as well.

There are other organizations (such as NABBA) that go by height classes. The AAU did as well when they were still operating. Judging by the current status of these two organizations, I'd be inclined to believe that weight classes are the more popular option.

I've heard of instances in powerlifting where the weigh in was 2 hours before the competition and the lifters still tried to eat themselves up and gain weight for the competition, thus not being under the weight that the weightclass would require. But that's it how it goes.

Everyone in every single sport with weight classes does this.

Of course it is fair, mastering the art of peaking and making a weight for a class is a very difficult task.  Those who have it mastered have the advantage and rightfully so IMO.  It takes an immense amount of knowledge about your body to come in at the top end of a weight category and then to fill out without blowing it.

Haroldus Daumbrakus from the UK competes in the under 100kg class, he weighed in at 99.8kg for his last show weigh in.  The show was only in the evening but he will have gained vital weight (and fullness) in that time.  The British finals are next month and over two days, this will test who can master making weight and peaking.

Just an open debate..not saying I am pro or con...

Just love all the clowns that say, well Kevin weighed in at 201.9 and had to have been 230 at Prejuding or finals....

there is nothing to debate about except increasing the weight limit to 210.top guys really having hard time to make up the weight.i think increasing the weight limit up to 210 could seriously increase the standard and public interest in the class.

if EVERYONE weighs in at the same time....EVERYONE has the same amount of time to re-feed and bump their weight back up

my concern isnt with WHEN the weigh-in is.........its the weight limit..........i think they should bump the limit of the division up to between 208-210

that way a persona that is an inch taller then a midget might actually a have a chance of doing well

if the limit was 208 or 210 ther would still be a huge gay between guys in the open, and guys in this calss, as most guys in the open compete around 230-235-240

We had it at 210...it was too high.  I proposed 205...it ended up 202.  I still think 205 is the best for all concerned.  My focus was on the lt. heavy class, at 202, it only allows for a 4 pound gain into the pro's.

I think upping it to 210 would be great. Gives the guys like Henry and English the chance to grow a few pounds..also perhaps give Hide a chance to throw his name in the hat, although he does do well in the open...

I don't know about 230, but 207-212 is definitely possible.

This method has been done for years.. I don't see what the problem is.  It gives the opportunity for competitors to try something drastic in the last couple hrs before showdown.  It's their own gamble

honestly it should just go down to height like it used to be.  take the best of each class and have an overall.. this would solve everything.

No it wouldnt...it would pose more questions than answers....what if the 2nd and 3rd best BB in the heavy is better than the winner of the lightweight? And so forth and so on...

In most peoples opinion the 2nd is better than the first now. Atleast you wouldnt be stuck with one bodytype always winning.

It's fair, but it's bullshit also. Depends on which side you look at it from. Of course, for a guy like English who can manipulate his weight as such, he takes full advantage as he should. But for others like Jose Raymond and Henry, they're at a distinct disadvantage because once the bell sounds, they're on a completely different playing field. I still think David Henry should have won regardless.

he's short, but he's 270 he claims off season and he looked huge in the 202's he could have done the open well,i'd say he was closer to 220 after weighins and carbed.

Maybe. But it matters less whether it's the same day, the day before or x days before, what's more important is that everybody weighs in at the same time. One of the very definitions of fairness is that everyone plays by the same rules.

well what if the winner of the 202 is better than the 2nd and 3rd place heavy? it's the same.  Both ways are shit really.
