If you don't use a belt.  ;) There is nothing inherently bad with overhead pressing. That was the excuse they officials brought out when they get rid of the press in weightlifting, and that reasoning stuck. I know my shoulders love pressing. Sure, you can overdo anything. Imbalances will make you hurt. Just gotta be smart and you will make it.

That isn't why they got rid of it.  They got rid of the lift because people were using excessive back bend to make heavier lifts and the lift was too hard to judge.  Regular military press is one of the best things you can do for your shoulders.  Bench presses have ruined a lot more shoulders than presses ever have.

This. Standing military with the grip about a thumbs length from smooth is extremely safe, full range. Wider grip militaries (or benches, inclines, etc) are where the trouble starts.

I used to do weightlifting. Later as a bodybuilder I easily cleaned and pressed 270 pounds. Might not sound like much but the next best in my gym was 230 pounds. I haven't seen anyone pushing heavy weights like that for years and even decades now. A lost art.

Btw, lots of variations in the press behind neck. Amazing how most cheat. My version has to be with the bar resting on your traps like it would for a squat. Or you could start from over head and touch the traps and then back up. So some guys do presses FROM behind the neck which isn't the same at all. The main thing is that people do the style that allows them to lift respectable poundages.

Justin Harris hang clean and press with 225. Not impressive for his size, but not too bad.

MOS' best shoulder lifts:

Smith Press was three 45lb plates and one 25lb plate per side for 4 reps.
Hammer shoulder press was 4 45lb plates and one 25lbs plate per side for 3 reps.
Front laterals with 90lb dbs for 8.
Side laterals with 85lb dbs for 5.
Reverse grip barbell press with 225 for 6.
Bent over lateral raises with 100lb dbs for 4-5.
Upright rows I did a few with 185lbs but killed my wrists and I stopped doing them.
Db presses I did some reps with 120lb dbs but stopped cause they felt uncomfortable.

Today I still press heavy (but remain reserved to prevent injury) and also back off on weight on laterals and do more reps with 50-60lb dbs.

I agree. He's called Casey Reece. Has benched around 600 in competition, but his shoulder presses and inclines are insane.

No doubt Levrone would of been close to that if he worked front presses, though. There was a recent video of Kai hitting 405 for 4 but with some spotter help, too.

Ursus Pressing lifts

Standing barbell press - 225x10. Stopped with more in me 244x5 - stronger now
Seated DB press - 115's x multiple sets of 9

On BB I lower bar to clavicle and DB until the DB's touch my shoulder. My bench press grip is also ver narrow. Index finger is 1" from the smooth of the bar. Noone in my gym presses as narrow as me.

Very strong and good choice on the grip width.

Justin Harris was a top level national bber and competed a few times in PL.

Some legs for sure but still 244lbs

I did not intentionally choose that grip. Just suits me and I have done it since day 1. I do not like wide grip. Feels dodgy in my armpit area especially when you do high reps or it gets heavy.

Thanks man.  I was about 305 or so.  That sweatshirt was a 10x.  Akebono and the sumo wrestlers from japan came to hawaii and did an exhibition in Honolulu back then.  The tall and big man store at Ala Moana got the biggest shirts they could find and stocked up the store.  I had to buy one.  It was HUGE.  I always wore baggy shirts during the day and at night mostly Polo.

I just wore really big shirts around most of the time during the day because I once I was pout of the house I was either at the gym, or movie, or eating or driving around.  I didn't wear anything to impress anyone it was justg for comfort.  Plus I wanted to see what a 10x wore like

What were your best shoulder presses at that weight?

Well I gotta tell you that the video of the guy you posted blows me away.  That fucker is strong as hell and he is one guy I would have loved to train with.  I wouldn't have to take off the plates like I used to when I trained with guys.  I never did that many with 405.  The thing I like about him too is his range of motion.  I usually rest a second at the bottom and press up I do full reps.  He does too.  I hated training with guys who would do 1/4 or 1/2 reps just to say they train with what I used.  It made them feel good though.  I did 405 a few times.  I mostly just did reps with 315.  I think I went as high as 140's for dumbbells I can't remember.  Shoulders I trained alot and when I benched my front delts felt it alot.  I had a great most muscular pose back then.  Veins and striations at 300+ pounds I thought was cool.  I wore that shirt and did laterals and striations all over my delts and upper chest.  I miss those days.  But the dude you posted is very very impressive.

One thing about my military is it is basically drug free.  I was doing these weights 8-10 years after I took my last 1cc of test.  I think if I was still on or took what some of these others took I could have done alot more weight.  I lifted for fun not competition
