Layne was looking very impressive and in good condition at the Mr. Olympia expo. And for those who don't believe he is natural, the fact is that most juicers are not Layne's size and not nearly his strength, so if Layne is a juicer he's still impressive. And he does have arms that are almost 18", as compared to my arms which are 15" right now [they will be bigger very soon ;)]. At the end I made the comparison just to show the difference.
Layne has also inspired me to get back into bodybuilding. Frankly I haven't cared much about bodybuilding lately because it seemed rather shallow to me and I have two babies to take care of now and far more important things to do than working out, but after talking to Layne I have to say that I want to put on some size and get back into shape. Layne is a great representative for bodybuilding and a great speaker. I can't really understand why anyone can hate on him honestly. He is also very helpful in answering questions to help people to achieve their goals.

damm Matt, that hair cut looks gayer than RuPaul and Richard Simmons sharing a pack of skittles.
BayGM is going to give you a "slurp" when sees that hair cut.

Wait, seriously? My hair would raise BayGBM's bar? :D Is it gay to be flattered if a gay guy compliments you? ???

Are you french Canadian, Matt?
No, from Ontario. You know what's interesting is that I didn't realize how Canadian I sound and to be honest, most of my friends don't sound Canadian in my opinion. They would just sound like any American on an American entertainment or news show. I think for me there is no hiding my Canadian accent but I don't really understand why this is the case for me but not for most of my friends.

Strange, as to me, an Englishman, you sound like a frenchman who speaks very good english.

Interesting. I never paid much attention to how my voice sounded, mainly because I never really hard any recordings of my voice, but it struck me as being pretty Canadian. As I said, a lot of my friends could just pass for American sounding.

...why the hell are these two complaining about getting picked on when they were children? Aren't you 'men' now?...move on; how pathetic! ::)...if you're still lamenting at this point in your lives, I don't think an extra inch on your arms is going to do jack shit.

epic failing trying to fit in

I can't really understand why anyone can hate on him honestly.
I don't think anyone hates him, at least I don't.
What I can't really understand is why are you so obssesed with him? This is like the 5th thread or so you've started about him counting both MD and here.

Might explain why Matzi grew up to be such an insecure bigot.

You don't have a 15 inch arm.

I have never cared one way or another about whether Layne juices or not. What his response about using gear demonstrated was that Layne was trying to justify his "natural" status to the extreme. He used all types of verbage that would raise red flags if he were under any kind of criminal interrogation. I now believe he is a liar.
-
Matt... aside from your tragically large, mildly repulsive beaklike nose - you’re not a bad looking guy.
No homo.
-
If I look past the hair and tanktop then it's actually a good interview.
;D ;D ;D
I bought that NPC tank top at the expo actually and I think the brand is really well fitting. I know that sounds like a plug, but honestly they are pretty good tanks.

Looking back, I don't think I got ripped on in high school nearly as much as I do here on getbig. ;D But I think Layne's point is correct about how it means more when you are growing up than it does later in life. Now it doesn't matter to me but at the time it did and I can thank working out for helping me get over that and in a nostalgic sense, that's why I want to get back into it again.

You're right about that. I just happen to be very impressed with Layne because he has achieved a lot in a variety of areas in his life. In addition to success in bodybuilding and powerlifting, Layne has a Ph.D and is now happily married to a nice woman who really cares about him. Overall, I think he is in a really good spot and is a positive role model.
Might explain why Matzi grew up to be such an insecure bigot.
If you read what I say carefully, I am rarely racist and for the most part quite reasonable. One does not need to be a bigot to reject political correctness. As Woten said, any sane White person would balk at it. We live in a society where it is customary to blame everything on White people while proclaiming "Racism is bad". I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous.

Hey thanks james001!! My nose was broken in 2003 during an army course I was taking and I really should have looked into getting it fixed at the time but with the army being so hectic I just put it off. I didn't think it was as bad as it was, but it was. I guess since I don't normally see my nose from the side, I didn't notice as much as other people would have.

Matt, That was cool interview and I liked how you pused Layne to answer some tought quiestions, such as the "natural status" issue.
Layne was not the least bit defensive and realizes just how closed minded many are within hardcore BB.
If you accept a ripped, strong guy like Layne is natural, you then have to accept that BB success is lot more than drugs.
Most of naysayers like the ready made exucseas to why they suck, and that is their choice.
You seem like a straigh shooter Matt.
I hope we meet at at an expo or contest.
Keep training and all the best to you. :D

Yes! Layne is a great speaker and that made it really easy to interview him. I'm happy he answered the questions so thoroughly.
Howie, will you be going to the Arnold? Also, are there any other shows worth going to, possibly the Ironman or NPC Nationals?
PS: Did anyone catch 7:30? ;D

Awesome arms on Layne, props.

He has great size and I think there is nothing unhealthy about being Layne's size. He says he is 5'10.5" but looks more like a full 5'11 in person. I'm not sure, but I think his weight was around 200 or so.
Today - One week out from IFPA Cape Cod Pro:

Good that MattC actually got to meet the subject of his obsession.

Props to Layne for not laughing.
-
You SchmoeHawk.
I wasn`t HAPPY that he tore his pec. I just wasn`t surprised that he did so and figured it inevitable given his goofy training style and intense delusion at the time. Why on earth would anyone put elastic bands on a Bench Press and then proceed to load it with 400-500 pounds when you can only bench in the 300s? That is what he did and he paid the price. Stupidity and Delusion collided and a torn pec was the shattering aftermath left in wake.
I also wasn`t unhappy that he tore his pec. I was indifferent.
Furthermore, you cut the footage of your interview as Layne does not have anything negative to say about me nor will he ever. I am quite sure it came off as awkward as your lead in about me did as well.
You should have asked Layne about his beliefs in the magical Jesus in the sky. That would have proved more interesting and amusing. Also you could have asked about his parents and family background a little more. There are events in his past that perhaps many might find interesting surrounding his upbringing.

Layne's a great guy helped me out a lot after one of my worst showings. Took the time to really talk to me and explan things for me and give me some new ideas.
Good for him for all his achievements.
I for one believe he is natural, and those that are accusing him of juicing are really just fueling him further and really just complimenting him!

great interview

LOL Matt bro, your bench is close to Layne's? Dude... ::)
Yes it is. I've posted videos to confirm that. At this exact moment it might not be as close as it usually is, but I've only had one chest workout in the past six weeks. My best ever was 345 and Layne's best ever was somewhere in the range of 350-370, so our bench is close. Layne is way stronger than me overall and I would never deny that.
Layne tore his pec as some on here know and has not been benching as heavy since then. But to compare Layne at his best and me at my best, our bench max was within around 20 pounds of one another. Also, I was around 180 at the time of my max bench and Layne was around 210-220, so it's safe to say it was pretty close.
great interview
E
Hey thanks Earl!!! Layne is an interesting dude and has a lot to say.
-
Yeah, I believe he's natural. Just look at his legs. Serious statement.
-
Yeah, I believe he's natural. Just look at his legs. Serious statement.
Yes, his legs could stand to be bigger to match his upper body although he has brought them up since 2004. Layne is right that his progress has been slow and steady.
What I meant in the interview by "rapid progress" is that it seemed like Layne was cranking out one PR after another in the past year or two. Even though the lifts were only marginally higher than the previous ones, to make PR after PR is still pretty rapid in powerlifting terms I would say.
-
Yeah, that's one of the nasty truths about bodybuilding. If you want big legs, you'd better be using something good. Someone with genetically freaky legs can get away without it, maybe, but most guys simply have to have something extra. It's difficult to create solid, true bodybuilder-like muscle on your legs and your upper body at the same time without hormones. :'(
-
Judging by the pictures, he's made some good progress on his adductors. Nothing suspicious about this guy's build. I wouldn't doubt his claims of being natural at all.

For sure, dude looks great.. I'm guessing he gets to around 245 off season if he competes around 200

I can't speak for everyone, but I can say that where I live there are no juicers who carry as much lean muscle as Layne given his height. There are a couple of guys [literally maybe two] where I am who have more mass, but they both juice heavily. Natural or juiced, I think Layne carries a respectable amount of mass.

I think Layne gets into the 230s but not sure if he has hit 240 yet. I remember in 2007 he told me that at close to 230 he was feeling noticeably less comfortable than say at 215 or less. It's funny how pros his height are well over 300 pounds. How does Markus Ruhl walk around at up to 335-345 in the off-season? He must feel horrible.
-
You could tell by the video he's not on hormones, he didn't have that constant pop to his muscle that gear gives you. I don't know if he uses insulin, gh and other peptides, but for sure he doesn't use anabolic steroids.

Some people seem to be able to distinguish a steroid vs. non-steroid look, although personally I can't tell the difference. Layne is 200 and is pretty tall for a bodybuilder and has been at it for quite some time. But on that note, most people who have a build like Layne's are using.
-
Let's put it this way, if he is using , it's small amounts and nowhere near as blatant or obvious as Skip La Cour
who is clearly using

It can be done. You just would have to squat every day. Serious.

Hmm...I'm not going to question your experience here, but that could definitely cause a person to lose anything he's built on his upper body, and in most cases it wouldn't do much for progressing with legs, either. You may well be different, but in general terms...
The only way I could see that even coming close to working would be if the person had extremely unusual genes and was fully within his prime.

I exaggerated a little bit. A person should be prepared to squat every day to see great results in the leg department, but that of course is not entirely necessary. I wonder why pros train like they train. Muscle groups once per week, and there is no total rest designed into the program. I like the scheme where there is a couple of weeks of hard training (all muscle groups worked almost every day) and then 7 to 10 days of total rest. This in my mind is very effective. It seems lazy since you rest so much and often, but it seems to work.
-
This thread should be the only one that any newb bodybuilder should pay attention to if they want to see why it is that virtually all NPC athletes use drugs.
This is a guy who has (for better or worse) spent 10 years lifting weights, and this is the best he can muster thus far. I ain't knockin' him, but look at the physique. Is this something that would have motivated any young guys here to train and follow a bodybuilding lifestyle?...I don't think so.
It's not hard to realize how difficult it is to put on size naturally. Only the select genetic few can do it. Layne is not one of them; this took TEN YEARS. Again...I'm not knocking him, I'm putting this out there for those who want to know what they can expect.
Is it no wonder people crank?
With this type of physique as it's benchmark, what kind of industry could be supported in terms of what the pros do right now?
At least it's an honest body of work, but if you were to try to attract people to bodybuild (say, if you were a Weider back in the day), this is not what would be profitable. That's been proven time and time again.
That being said, he's doing the best with what he's got. If this is the 'gold standard' for natural bodybuilding, then it's no wonder it's not popular.
The 'true' genetic freaks out there do what they must to get a look that makes money: and who can blame them?
That is all.

You know, I hadn't really thought about it at the time, but 365 at that time would have been double body weight so looking back, that really wasn't too bad.
I would post links to videos but I will first send Ron a PM asking if he will unban my website URL. I have been trying to give getbig.com shoutouts as much as possible in my videos and I will promise Ron I will not spam. Hopefully he will let me post links to my site and if he does, I will post links to the videos.

A DUB, I have lots of my bench videos on my site in my forum, it's just annoying to have to search them and TINYURL them to put them on here. I'm hoping Ron unbans my website URL link. But I've always been honest about my lifts and I'm sure my bench will be back to 320 or more fairly soon as my body weight goes up.
