Title: Any Buell fans here
Post by: slacker on October 06, 2010, 06:33:56 PM
Anyone like this.   Im looking for a new bike and thinking either this if they produce it. Or a triumph

Triumph sucks imo.

Buell are fun bikes, but if you're tall, they suck as well because the bikes are really short. It's a different feeling.

What are you searching for in a bike, you want a fast bike, or one that looks good? I wouldn't really buy a bike for the looks.

I always liked the Buells, shame they went out of business. When I was shopping for a new bike it was either a Buell or a Triumph.  Haven't regretted getting a Speedy one bit though.

well, or at least what similar bike they will have on the market then.

They only build the F4 in all sorts of varities with "new" models popping up every few years.

The BMW s1000rr? good choice.

they aren't making a comeback......many private investors have offered to pony up the cash for continued production but buell declined.....they already liquidated most of the assets...its totaly up to harley to decide if they can comeback or not....and that answer is a no...

because 1 is damn near race only(big turbo, full engine build...everything), and the other is a daily rider(1397 head work, cams, little nitrous)...

my turbo bike is too much of a pain in the ass to ride anywhere, and the dailey rider is due for a rebuild.....so i am just going to sale both and build 1 new one.....1st gen, full forged internals with stock displacement, head work, very small cams, and a small-medium sized turbo...

Google "Erik Buell Racing", you'll see that he's still in business and planning on producing an "american made" sportbike in 2011.

I have both the MV Augusta and the 1k BMW. The BMW isn't as refined as my GSX-R1000 race bike, but it makes 207 hp with only minor mods. It's acceleration and top end are otherworldly, but the traction control needs some refinement.

Just my $0.02...

And no Buell bike has ever ridden in MotoGP. The premier GP class is prototype 800 cc bikes only. My guess is you meant Geoff May in AMA Superbike at Barber in Birmingham.

I was responding to multiple posts w/o using multi-quote.

I haven't seen the BMW at the drag strip yet, but check out the 2011 Kawi ZX-10, the specs (on paper at least) should make it similar to the Bimmer. I had an '04 ZX-10 that had a great motor, but terrible front end chatter.

the 04 is still the baddest zx10 ever made.....the thing was a beast....the front end chattered because of the short wheelbase.....i rode a stretched 04zx10 that didnt chatter at all......i just through a scotts on mine and forgot about the problem...

kawi's week link has always been the clutch....they solved it with the zx14...but the zx10 clutch still sucks....and its such a simple problem for them to fix....

buying a 1 is all about the 'cock show' for most riders you see on them.

most guys on a 1 can't ride it within 60% of what it is capable of doing. a guy who races on a 6 will school a recreational/ track day rider on a 1 any time.

I remember in 2007 when Buell came to Daytona for the 200 with their custom made XBRR. It had a $31,000 price tag and 1339 cc's of displacement and the AMA allowed it to race in the Formula Extreme class against 600 cc superbikes.

All 4 bikes broke down....

Buell came back in 2009 with their 1125RR liter bike....and won the 600 sportbike class (only because of Danny Eslick's riding). In club racing the Firebolt and Lightning are performance indexed down to race in Lightweight Twins classes against the Suzuki SV650.

I don't think I'd own one unless it was given to me.

YMMV.

Forgive my ignorance, but why were the Buells racing in a 600 class, instead of the liter class? Is it the the hp?

Yes...in a nutshell, down on HP compared to weight. The AMA made concessions to Buell/Harley (as the only American bike manufacturer) to try to attract bigger crowds to the races. Earlier pure-bred race models like the XBRR were based off modified air cooled Sportster engines - so they were slotted into a class based on a performace index. Simply put, even with the added displacement they were uncompetitive.

The newer model(s) like the 1125RR use liquid cooled Rotax/Helicon engines - those bikes race in the 1,000 cc class, but they're somewhat overmatched.

Not quite....the Parts Canada Superbike Championship race series (Canadian pro motorcycle racing) uses horsepower and weight restricted classes, not the AMA series.

Basically, Buell's got the formula down for the chassis, but the engines suck? Seems like Harley didn't want to kick out funds for R&D of topnotch engine, being that it seems that Buell was to be the sport bike arm and MV Agusta was to be the exotic arm of Harley...seems like Harley's upper management is only good with Chrome and Twins, and doesn't give a shit about Fast, Sport, and Fours. Like their business model only includes what they know and only what they know. Their attempts to diversify have seemed to fail or falter do to half assed doing stuff.
