I have noticed guys like Kevin levrone and lee priest, had sub par backs, and in there videos i don't even remember seeing them deadlift. Whereas guys who deadlift like Joj have far better backs, mid trap thickness, once phil heath incorporated deadlifts his back has come up tremendously, and is one of the best today.
Why are bodybuilders scared of bending over?

Kevin's back wasn't sub-par he did bring it up quite a bit from when he first turned pro but sub-par is really not accurate.

nasser could DL 855 at one point

Kevin had a serious back injury and that prevented him from doing heavy deads..

It's always easy to find an excuse for sth.

Non deadlifters have skinny necks, weak grip, and shake hands like fairy ballerinas. To be a true alpha man you gotta have a monster grip to back up the way you look.

Lee Priest did deadlifts in his Blonde Myth video. Not from ground but still deadlifts (in rack). So leave great Lee alone.
Good possibility is he did plenty of deadlifts in his earlier years as he was also heavy squatter.
I think here in GB instead we have our own pro who praised against any serious movements like squats, benchp and probably deadlifts (can't remember)...
You can discuss whether he had great back :-\
Better than mine for sure but then again I'm not making my living out of it and never had.

Lately i prefer to do an extra exercise for my lats instead of deads. I have a good lower back, no need for me to make it better.

Typical getbigger problem.

I don't recall Tony Pearson or Mike Christian being noted for their deadlifts. Both men, especially the "Jet Man" has great backs. But, Pearson has gone on record as stating, "While doing deadlifts, you might just think you are working the back, but you're working the entire body."

Nah. You can make that up with weighted hyperextentions & stiff-legged dumbbell lifts.
-
everybody wants to be a bodybuilder but nobody wants to lift no heavy ass weight 8)

exactly..........deadlif ts are a full body compound exercise. particularly when you are doing them heavy, your back is being worked little
the way i have found deadlifts to work for back, it 3/4 deadlifts on the smith machine when you start towards the top of the movement and really focus on squeezing and contracting the back muscles...........
the first part of the movement is legs and glutes......so to me, it is irrelevant during a back workout......for a bodybuilder anyway

I did this version in a power rack.....we called them top deadlifts.....and I agree. You can focus purely on the back much better. Don't get me wrong regular deads are awesome, especially for athletes, but I prefer the tops for back.

I think it's safer this way but a Getbigger once told me off for doing my deads from the top. "Then you're not doing deadlifts." Fine by me. Whatever.

haha, exactly. I'm not a competitive lifter, I just want to work the back the best way possible.

Ronnie Coleman did them proper way... on back day... But then again who is he to school us some back training ::)

Ronnie knows himself and I know myself, and I feel a lot less likely to injure myself going down from the top and tapping.

Not to mention we all aren't genetic freaks with a massive amount of chemicals being pumped into us on a daily basis.....

His back was weak compared to the rest of his physique, it has nothing to do with his back being better than yours. :-\
I also meant his back thickness, compare his BDB shots to those of Flex, Ronnie, Shawn, Dorian, etc. You'll get the idea.
His lat spread wasn't that bad, he had some width.
-
partial deadlifts done like yates is good for bodybuilders
-

Yeah, you guys are probably right.
But I have never hurt my lower back while doing full deadlifts so I assume this once again comes down to everybody's structure or whatever... And personally I don't mind if my thighs get little stress at bottom of the movement.
I now do deadlifts as my first exercise on back day and get pump to my whole back. Might still give partial deadlifts a chance in future..
-
So, you're tellin me that blacks who dont DL are poor?
-
Yeah, you guys are probably right.

for me, it wasn't really a choice based on injury. I think it works the back more effectively.....but another big reason is that if you hit back and legs on separate days, it was very taxing on the quads and hamstrings, which I think leads to over training.
-
certainly deadlift from the floor can grow you too but partial deadlift is more specific for bodybuilers as long as you don't make it an ego lift and limit ROM to 2 inches,, you should still start below knees,,

I still do a full ROM but I don't like the idea of deads loading the back suddenly while in its most vulnerable posture. I just tap on the floor because it's a more fluid movement imo.
Deadlift devotees would probably argue that there's not a sudden loading because your pull on the bar increases gradually and you don't just go from 0 to ripping it off the ground.
I'm just stuck in my ways tho and haven't had a deadlifting injury so I don't want to change.

I always preferred to just drop that bitch from mid-shin and let it bounce back up.... ;D

little bounce on the floor is ok IF you have control,, many powerlifter will train the lift like that too (some of the time),, as long as you keep the groove,,
me i always prefer to do it yates style,, i could deadlifts 700lbs + from the floor but for me that is not bodybuilfing ,, its too much powerlifting i do partial with less and usually not as first exericse
-

The $3/square yard carpet in the second bedroom has lousy elasticity!

That's totally out of my league. I'm just a recreational lifter who wants to stay reasonably strong, injury free, and look good naked.
So far I'm 0 for 3.

Need to invest in some rubber mats with some serious spring to them !

From a bodybuilding stand point, I think stiff-leg deadlifts are better than regular deadlifts.
I can pull a lot of weight in regular deads but stiff-leg deads give me a better pump in the back and hamstrings

stiff leg is good for bodybuilder for hamstrings,, glutes and lower back but if you wana work it through the lats more then yates style is more specific

I don't do regular DL anymore, just SLDL during my leg workout. I find that doing DL, SLDL, and squatting all in the same week is too much on my lower back, so something had to go and I really like SLDLs.

I always thought the same as the OP, especially Kevin Levrone. I've never seen a pic of him deadlifting, or Flex wheeler (good lower back though), Cormier, Dillet. In contrast, Mike Francois had one of the sickest looking lower backs ever. Those pics of him deadlifting in Flex were very inspirational.
Levrone also did not know how to present his back while posing. He never flexed the lower back making it look non-existent. Even Yates said that he had stopped deadlifting heavy for years - makes you wonder how his back would've looked if he kept on.
-
For bodybuilding purposes, rack pulls with a double overhand grip with the bar slightly below the knee will get your back more results than a conventional deadlift.
-
Goodrum deadlifts.
