Title: The 1990 Mr. Olympia
Post by: Rhomboids on October 12, 2010, 03:40:32 PM
The most controversial Olympia yet.  It was the first officially 'drug tested' Olympia, and the last too.  The IFBB was trying to go legit and it lost its golden opportunity by reverting back to non-drug tested shows.  Had they given these guys the adequate time, who knows what could've been.  Surely BB couldn't have been worse off for it.  Now more than ever its a cult sport.  I don't even follow it anymore and back in the 90s i read Flex cover to cover each month.

I have up to the 1995 Olympia.  If you guys wanted, say so here.

Just think how many people would believe these guys are natural if there were drug "tests" every year. Then we would argue with them.  ::)

It's really something to see the passing of the torch from Haney to Yates and the birth of the mass monsters.  Then Levrone debuting and Shawn Ray being visibly sick at failing to crack the top 3 one year.  I'm gonna go ahead and post the links to 1990-94 Olympias over the next few days.  IF there's enough interest 95-99 can be next.

Thanks for posting the video.

Based on that video, I think Labrada should have won the show. He seems to have had the best combination on stage.

How long is adequate time? And how long would the fans support it? Remember what happened at the 1992 WBF Championship. Vince McMahon hired Dr. Mauro DiPasquale to run the drug-testing three months before the show and DiPasquale tested them for everything but the kitchen sink.

Half of those guys looked AWFUL and few gave any "college try" points for going drug-free.

I think the real opportunity missed was how legitimate of a physique, a proessional physique, can a person build if they have the adequate sponsorship, thus time/food/supplementation is not an issue in terms of one not being able to afford it because you got a full time job.  At the very least, i think with today's supplements, a guy could have built a 1970's-like physique.  Of course, the problem is that you'd have a Mr. Olympia that was smaller than your average gym rat.

But then again, we don't have to wonder what could have happened if they chose to not drug test - because they did exactly that.  Yates came in.  Then Levrone, wheeler, Dillet and many other monsters.  To me the 'sport' feels much more underground than when i was a teenager following it closely.  Is it a case of me growing out of it and realizing the reality of it?  Or is BB more popular today than ever?

I can't rememer which, but on one, he was 318lbs and was criticized for sacrificing a bit of condition for size.  Logically, you'd assume he was better in '93 since he had '92 prep to learn from.  It's too bad the video doesnt show, that i can remember, Lou posing with Flavio and the creation of the much thereafter overused most muscular staredown.  Looking back at yates, that's a physique that you either love or hate.

The late Benaziza.

I think Lou looked better in 92 then 93.

He was smaller in 92 for sure but his waist was tiny and he was hard. In 93 he was watery and his stomach was terrible.

Posing was what let him down in 92 more than anything.
