You guys are pretty damn good at this and I gotta agree with most but what I find most interesting in a movie are the scenes in which the director gets little kids to act or react in various parts of the filming.
For instance Cary Guffey played the part of Barry Guiler .... the little kid who was abducted by Aliens in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".
Supposedly little kids cannot 'act' .... so Speilberg devised many ways in which to get Cary to 'react' to get the 'reactions' from Cary that he wanted to show on screen.
The one scene I'll always remember is the scene where little Barry Guller walks down the stairs and initially sees the aliens (or the mischief they are causing) with a look of complete and total surprise on his face.
Speilberg claims that he got that scene on film by dressing up in a teddy-bear costume and dancing beside the rolling camera.
The other scene I'll always remember is the scene where the aliens return Barry to his mother and the look on Barry's face when the aliens depart ......... He had fun and he's definitely going to miss them.
I don't know how Speilberg got that reaction from such a little kid but in my opinion he was a definite scene stealer throughout the entire movie.
Movie kids are great reactors, but everyone from those old studio days claim that Shirley Temple was a true actress and could take direction at a very early age.

Pish tosh. Jackie Cooper, while filming The Champ in '31, was told that if he didn't cry his dog would be shot. ;D

Christian bale in harsh times, he plays a spic(white) military vet. It's not the gratest movie but his acting in it was through the roof. Given his bitch fit two years later, this is authentic pure bale.

Chimps, thanks for that "I'll kill your dog!" reminder. That was mean but it worked and the same shit happens today between major directors and their major stars which eventually gets the best on-screen performance.
I've been on a number of movie sets where major actors perform amazing acting roles and it damn-right fascinating to say the least.
Ten minutes before a major scene you're talking to this nice guy over a cup of coffee and a doughnut and minutes later he's a deranged serial killer in front of that PanaVision camera completely convincible and completely different from his real personality.
I have two family members in the movie acting business and sometimes they 'become' the person they will be portraying on screen at home while spending time with the wife and kids..... and at times, it's downright scarey and very fascinating - especially if he's rehearsing for a serial killer type role coming up. Then the kids all beg him to stop and become their dad once again, or maybe that friendly monster he portrayed last year in Costa Rica.
But they kids at home and up and down the block really love him when he's casted in Planet of the Apes roles (two so far) because they love to climb trees and run up and down the street on all-fours and peel bannanas like a monkey.
And he can immediately change his personality to become any actor you've most likely seen on any movie screen. Good actors really have amazing talent on the screen and off as well.

I can't believe none of you suggested Ricky Shroeder from his final scene in "The Champ" (1979)....
He was just 5 years old at the time......
-
Grant, you didn't say if you liked Training Day but my nephew appeared in a "one man play" with Ethan Hawk and has the utmost respect for Ethan because every time Ethan got accolades for his role in that play or invited to some major shindig with the Broadway big-wigs, he suggested that they also not overlook my nephew who played an important but small part in that production.
Most stars simply forget the supporting characters, but Ethan was definitely not that kind of guy.
And I agree with ya on Ricky Shroeder especially for his role in Lonesome Dove.
-
He was just 9 years old at the time......
FIXED
Awesome acting.

I didn't like Training Day ...I loved it! It's one of my all time favorites that I can watch repeatedly ....along with Heat, No Country For Old Men, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall....and a few others....
Ethan Hawke is supremely talented. I love when big names still do Broadway plays even though there is little money in it. It shows their passion for the arts!
Lonesome Dove is one of the most under-rated classics of our time.... and Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are exceptional in it too....
(I have your emails and i promise to reply. Sorry for the delay)

FIXED
Awesome acting.
Nine? Really? I read he was younger? Thanks for the correction.
-
No Country for Old Men....... One of the few top grossing movies I disliked and I still don't know why everyone else thought it was so damn good.
I think I might have disliked it mainly due to the last scene where he talks to his dad and it didn't seem to fit.
Anyone care to explain why I failed to understand that ending? I'd appreciate it.
Here's a trivia question for you movie fans ....
Who said, "The kid stays in the picture!"?
Who did he say it to?
What was the name of the movie?
Who was the major star?
Who was the kid?
Dr Chimps will be coming up next!

Ditto.
Same goes for the even more atrocious 'There will be blood'.
A similar paced movie that I liked was 'The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford'.

How about foreign films!? A lot of the better ones are far better than Hollywood's current productions.
One of my favorite foreign movies was a 2009 French film called "UN PROPHETE" or THE PROPHEt with a relatively new actor - Tahar Rahim - who did one hell of a great job in that flick about a young Arab man who is sent to a French prison where he becomes a mafia kingpin.
Doesn't sound like much but it was a hell of a great movie and Tahar Rahim made it real and I believe that all the other "actors" were actual inmates..
He's making five new films, so you'll be hearing about this great new actor ..
2012 Black Thirst (pre-production)
2011 Aimer à perdre la raison (pre-production)
2011 Cool Water (pre-production)
2011 Free Men (filming)
2010 The Eagle (completed)
Also very well done with great acting was Sweden's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" which Hollywood is attempting to reproduce right now.
-
That was filmed at Van cortlandt park in the Bronx. I went to school right over there.
-
Lonesome Dove is one of the most under-rated classics of our time.... and Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are exceptional in it too....
x 100
It's my all time favorite evah !!
-
one of the most amazing characters in the history of cinema.....

This always brings a tear to my eye.

How about foreign films!?
They make movies outside America?

JVCD..... I have never seen that movie but I'd read good reviews about it and the fact that it was going to restart his career. (I'll find it on NetFlix.)
But as far as I know, it never did happen. What's up with that?
BTW... Any exceptionally good USMC Drill Instructor (God bless 'em all!) would prove to be a great actor if he could continue that persona in front of a movie camera. They act every day with a real live, critical audience and I'm somewhat surprised that some Hollywood writers have yet to write a present day movie script about the daily life and routine of DI's of the Marine Corps type.
I've got a good number of actual DI shinanigans that would be more than appropriate for Academy consideration.
Hmmm, come to think of it ....... You got Final Draft yet, Grant/Disturbia?
-
-
I wonder if Ed Norton would feel this way today, seeing as how his boyhood crush Obama has done nothing to fix any of these things.

hahahah if you like this watch the version with the voice of mickey mouse - I lost it when Hartman shows his warface eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!!!

One of my all time favorites - and such a brave movie for the time.
Today Directors have no balls anymore - all they are interested in is how they can make a movie that
creates the greatest interest with over 90% of the worlds douchbags.

Ray Winstone in Nil by Mouth - possibly the most depressing film of alltime.
ya...it's a real hard film to watch. It was directed by Gary Oldman and supposedly based from his childhood....yeesh :-\

"Well, I believe in the soul... the cock...the pussy... the small of a woman's back... the hangin' curveball... high fiber... good scotch... that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent overrated crap... I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. Goodnight."
