Title: NPC Nationals: New Physique Division for the Men
Post by: Ron on October 14, 2010, 03:33:25 PM

From the NPC Board of Governors meeting at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

There WILL be a new "physique" division for the men starting in 2011.

It will be interested as the exact details of this new division comes out, but I assume it will be like what Flex had at the Olympia onstage at the expo.   Basically, not too muscular (aka, not for Flex Magazine), but more for the magazines of Muscle & Fitness.  Should be interesting.

At the Flex contest onstage at the Olympia, they had more than 45+ male competitors vying for the top spot.

Actually, it is a good idea.  Many competitors have complained that they want to compete, but not be the super muscular bodybuilders that the sport wants them too.  This is a good division for a myriad of guys who look good, are in great shape, and want to compete.

A few of these contests have been going on in the past year or two as 'Physique Contests' for the guys and are popular.

So stop complaining, and lets see some of you get on stage.

In 2011.

honeslty, I think i would be too small for it.

again, it depends on the criteria of what the NPC is looking for

even though this would be a "Physique" division i'm more than willing to bet any/all competitors will compete with "assistance"

As usual, Un_$ung is on point. Not sure if it'll work as well as the bikini, since men seem to bring less people (1-2 friends, maybe a couple family members) vs the women who bring a whole fucking entourage complete with "Go Becky Go!" signs and home baked cookies for post-show.  :D

even though i hate the bikini division personally..........i could understand how it might be successful..........the women are more feminine and pretty.........not as big

but NOBODY wants to go to a bodybuilding contest to see skinnier men compete...........you can go a swim meet and actually watch them do something,

I don't even know what to say, in one way it's good because it will focusing more on the way bodybuilding was in the 70's and 80's but at the same time it's just another scam to get more ticket money/entrance fee's and make bodybuilding look less hardcore and extreme.

Ron,

I've seen this type of contest before and it just seemed like a modeling/beauty pageant!

What I have seen too and I liked, is a BODYBUILDING division that have classes split up by "Weight DIVIDED BY height", I think the division was called something like "Classic Bodybuilding" - evens out the playing field a little!

exactly, they are saying guys like the cover of "Muscle and Fitness" not "Flex"

well sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but those guys, the christian boeving, mike o'hearn types (and i know this c0cksucking liar claims natty)..........all take a TON of gear as well............instead of 5 or 6 grams a week, like an IFBB pro.......they take 3 or 3

......and go easier on the growth and leave out the slin for the most part

so please no one think, that this class is going to be a natural class

There are a ton of competitor and men who want to compete but just dont want to get big and muscular.  That doesnt mean they don't want to be in shape with a six pack.  There is a difference.

Judging by what I saw at the Muscle&Fitness Physique Contest at the Olympia, and the Bodyspace Contest in January, and also various other events, there is an interest for it, and a lot of guys want to compete.

If you think this is guys in swimsuits, you are wrong.  Check out the pics from the Bodyspace, and from the M&F Physique from the Olympia.  In shape guys.  Now, forget about the short swimsuits.

These guys need to wear board shorts, which are like long shorts that look cool.   It isnt going to be gay, and a can guarantee you that a lot of these guys have girlfriends that would love to see them compete.

So again, a bunch of talentless model failures vying for the false notion of becoming famous. At least bodybuilding was built on some passion, not just vanity.

It'll be just as retarded as bikini. Some guys will be able to just walk off the street and do ok if they possess the pretty boy homo look and some decent genetics.  For example:

Yes, male bodybuilders, and um.... 260 beautiful girls in bikinis this weekend... oh well...

With a male bodybuilder, I look at the entire physique, but rarely look to see if they are posing in 'underwear'.   So dude, just stop looking down there, and appreciate and respect.  You sound like the conservative that goes to church and is afraid of his own shadow.

Is it a bad idea?  We will see.   Everyone complains about something.

Sounds like it is going to be based on height and weight...you have to be a certain height and weight to be in a category. In Asia, the WBSF has already started doing shows like that. It's basically taking bbing back to the earlier days before the mass game came into the picture.

Who knows, if it does turn out to be like what i've just explained..maybe there will yet be hope for bbing to be a lil more mainstream. ;)

In 2011.

This might be somewhat complicated to execute.  You would have to have the judges expressly looking for thinner builds and awarding them or else these contests would just turn into normal professional bodybuilding contests.  I think it is a good idea though, in the sense that a lot of people who like bodybuilding do not want to take it to the same level as the pros.

Just like how I think the 202 class is a complete joke and failure. Isn't that class supposely for the "shorter," obviously smaller bber's yet they are awarding "midget," monsters like Kevin English and runner up Dave Henry, with the former looking like a bag of smashed assholes with a bunch of bodyparts put together with no flow when they should be awarding guys like Eduardo Correa. The rest of the planet, in IFBB, knows there is other division for Bodybuilding (Classics Bodybuilding) with different rules. In esence there is an limitation in weight for your height= if your are 1,75 cms tall you can not to weight more than 79 kilos and so...

There are four classes:

Until 1,70 m (with a maximun weight, your height + 2, after one meter) Exemple; 1,65 ms maximun weight 67 kilos
Until 1,75 m + 4
Until 1,80 m +6
More than 1,80 + 8 kilos

And is simply another form of the same bodybuilding... The same rules, same criteria...

I was in the NPC Board of Governors meeting where this was discussed.

It will begin next year (2011) and is OPTIONAL for NPC promoters to include it with their contests. There will be two divisions to start based on height. The look the judges are after is similar to the look you saw for the Muscle & Fitness cover search at the Olympia. The Physique division will likely be added to the Team Universe and USA contests, with yes IFBB Pro League status rewarded.

All the details have not yet been finalized and official word will come from the NPC office in the coming weeks.

I just hope there are standards that are announced, so that this will not be another class where no-one knows what the competitors ought to look like. Why I care, I don't know.

here's a Q....

How many getbiggers would sit through an hour or more of "Mens Figure" contest?

Personally - and this is only me - I would leave and then come back to see the bodybuilding show.

Judging by what I saw at the Muscle&Fitness Physique Contest at the Olympia, and the Bodyspace Contest in January, and also various other events, there is an interest for it, and a lot of guys want to compete.

These guys need to wear board shorts, which are like long shorts that look cool.   It isnt going to be gay, and a can guarantee you that a lot of these guys have girlfriends that would love to see them compete.

Ron, there wasn't much interest for the male model search at the Olympia.  Sorry, guys walking out in board shorts in a male beauty pageant is gay.  If the NPC wants to have a classic bodybuilding division, that's a little different because at least it's still a bodybuilding show.  Nobody wants to see a male model show.

Will they be doing bb routines or strictly quarter turns...or will it be more free form like bikini?

Fitness, Mens figure, bikini on one day and FBB 202 and The main bb comp on another day and fbb's.

Physique looks good, but is he wearing lipstick and eye makeup?! Hairstyle is a bit Comme Ci, Comme Ça, too. :D (I know, I'm just jealous because I'm an ugly midget bb'er......)

AND WHO ARE THEY?

I knew this was coming when I saw the male model search at the Olympia expo.  The expo is used as a testing ground for future IFBB divisions, like bikini.  Will men's bodybuilding be pushed aside, like female bodybuilding was, in an effort to soften the look and appeal to "mainstream".  I just think it's a bad idea to conduct male beauty pageants when you're a physique federation.

How long till the NPC adds a 'fat slob' division in an attempt to generate more revenue and garner more mainstream attention?

even though i hate the bikini division personally..........i could understand how it might be successful..........the women are more feminine and pretty.........not as big

but NOBODY wants to go to a bodybuilding contest to see skinnier men compete...........you can go a swim meet and actually watch them do something,

Absolutely.

He has a good physique for sure, but nobody wants to see this type posing on an IFBB/NPC stage.

This is bodybuilding, not fitness.

It's not going to be classic bodybuilding, it's men's figure.  "Male models" walking out in swimming trunks, nothing to do with bodybuilding.

They have that in the NANBF they call it lifetime achievement awards (for fat people that lose weight ).

It's ridiculous that guys with classic lines, that train more a less natural, are healthy and can walk two yards without collapsing, might be called a bodybuilder? Only rampant drug abusing missfits that society shuns should be called bodybuilders, only the hardcore guys. ::)

1.  People in this class won't be natural, not by a long shot.

2.  They won't be bodybuilders, they will be physique models.
