Watermelon Lowers Blood Pressure, Study Finds

Watermelon isn't just a refreshing, warm-weather fruit and a staple of summer picnics. It also has healing benefits when it comes to high blood pressure, a new study shows.

Researchers at Florida State University found that a daily dose of watermelon extract lowered blood pressure and improved the function of the arteries.

The authors attributed the benefits to an amino acid in the fruit called L-citrulline, which converts to another amino acid called L-arginine in the body.

L-arginine is crucial for the formation of nitric oxide, "which relaxes the smooth muscles in the arteries and opens the arteries," study lead author Arturo Figueroa, an assistant professor in the department of nutrition, food and exercise science, told AOL Health. "That decreases the blood pressure."

Watermelon is the richest natural source of L-citrulline that is edible, he said.

Figueroa and his co-author Professor Bahram H. Arjmandi gave nine prehypertensive participants -- five women and four men ages 51 to 57 -- four grams of watermelon extract a day for six weeks. The extract was in the form of a powder that they mixed with water, according to Figueroa.

Prehypertension is the precursor to hypertension, or high blood pressure, which is one of the main risk factors for strokes and heart attacks. About 60 percent of adults in the United States are prehypertensive or hypertensive.

By the end of the study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, the aortic blood pressure had been reduced in all nine of the subjects and their arterial functions had improved.

"The decreases were significant and were [similar to] the decrease that is found with medication," Figueroa said.

Figueroa said taking L-arginine alone has unpleasant side effects in many who suffer from high blood pressure, including nausea, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems. Watermelon, on the other hand, is easily digested.

The juicy, sweet fruit has other health benefits too, because it is packed with fiber; potassium; vitamins A, B6 and C; and lycopene, which is a potent antioxidant.

The downside of the findings, according to Figueroa, is that people would need to consume about four pounds of watermelon a day in order to experience a lowering of their blood pressure -- which he admitted isn't realistic. He advised taking a daily dose of the fruit's extract instead.

"You can eat watermelon in the natural form, but you will not get the dose and not produce these results," he told AOL Health

Well, due to the hypersensitivity to sodium and stress and a piss poor diet. Odd, how Africans don't have such a hypsensitivity towards sodium.

Theory suggests that when W. Africans were brought over here for slavery, that the journey was very stressful, those that survived, took it on the chin, but it raised their blood pressure levels, those that didn't survive, couldn't take stress to well. The survivors past the hypertension trait onto ancestors

ironically, the watermelon originally comes from South Africa, and China is the world's largest grower of watermelon...so, they like it more than American Negroes do.

I don't see how an experience that hightens bloodpressure of an individual can affect the offspring. Unless those who survived had high bloodpressure naturally, and because of that could handle it better.

I don't see how an experience that hightens bloodpressure of an individual can affect the offspring. Unless those who survived had high bloodpressure naturally, and because of that could handle it better.
That is theory. Because, if you survived the Middle Passage, and then you survived the auction block, and then you survive "Slavery", each one of those things help contribute to passing it along...many blacks have hypertension, due to the belief of not saying or doing things due to stress. It's been passed down culturally. Just accepting one's fate...think about how people in high stress jobs get burned out, or overly wired and die due to heart attacks or just have mental breakdowns. In American slavery, that shit is not tolerated, either your ass deals with it, or you die...so you will yourself through it. Thus, giving you hypertension. So imagine the stressful situation of being taken from your homeland by some strange folk, you don't know where you are going, what will happen. You are packed in like sardines, and very little food or water is given. That is truly a stressful situation. And I believe that journey was weeks or months on
end.

Now, this also ties in with mental health. There is a stigma in The black community about mental health, that admitting that you are "mentally ill", ie--crazy, is a taboo. There used to be a saying back in the day, "a black man
would kill somebody else, before killing himself", suicide is not a option, you persevere and deal with whatever situation is presented to you. Suicide was thought of as not just cowardly, but because blacks had adopted Christianity, there was a belief in holding on, that there is promiseland...
Sociologists and pyschologists have noted that since more blacks have assimmulated within society and made headway into certain fields, the suicide rates have gone up...more abandoning the old school way of thinking

So basically, internalizing stressful situations, not kirking out, not getting away from them, and then having children to do the same , coupled with a bad diet, has created a situation in the AA community where hypertension is prevelant.

And yes, I have hypertension, and yes it runs in my family. And yes, I do internalize stressful situations, to the point where it has done more harm to me, phyiscally, than good.

I do also...since I was a 20...I had it when I was 195lbs and now at 255...it's controlled though...obviously I'm sure if I lost 60-70lbs my heart would thank me and I probably could come off the pills...

Bottom line is because of our past and all things considered...we've learned to deal with stress pretty well....If something really bad when down say 2012 style bullshit while difficult, we would like many times before be able to adapt and overcome...not just us but others that have had generations of dealing with high stress situations...

http://cen.acs.org/articles/91/web/2013/07/Watermelon-Juice-Prevents-Aching-Muscles.html

Watermelon Juice Prevents Aching Muscles

Before taking a long bike ride on a hot summer day, have some watermelon: The juicy fruit may ward off muscle pains. Researchers report that people who drank watermelon juice before exercising felt less sore the next day than those who drank a pink placebo beverage (J. Agric. Food Chem. 2013, DOI: 10.1021/jf400964r). They also found that cells absorb the presumed active ingredient, L-citrulline, more readily from unpasteurized watermelon juice than from plain water spiked with the compound, suggesting the natural source is the optimal delivery medium.

L-citrulline is an uncommon amino acid that, until recently, hasn’t gotten a lot of attention, says Encarna Aguayo of the Technical University of Cartagena in Spain. Scientists now recognize that L-citrulline has antioxidant properties and may enhance athletic performance, she says. For example, studies have shown that L-citrulline in supplement form accelerates removal of lactic acid from muscles, allowing for more intense training and faster recovery. Watermelon is one of the few natural foods with an abundance of L-citrulline, so Aguayo wanted to test whether the fruit’s juice could function as a sports drink.

First, the researchers purchased 10 seedless watermelons from a local market in Cartagena and juiced the fruit. They pasteurized some of the juice by heating it to 80 ˚C. The rest was left unpasteurized. Pasteurization kills harmful pathogens, but it also can “reduce the bioavailability of many bioactive compounds, reducing the food’s functional properties,” Aguayo says.

Aguayo and her team measured the concentration of L-citrulline in the watermelon juice with high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry and then adjusted the concentration to a standard 0.685 mM. They also spiked water with the amino acid at the same concentration. The researchers then added the solutions to cultures of human colon cancer cells. After eight minutes, the researchers measured how much L-citrulline remained outside the cells. They found that cells bathed in the unpasteurized watermelon juice had absorbed 19% of the L-citrulline, while absorption from pasteurized juice and spiked water never got above 13% and 12%, respectively. Better absorption should lead to a more potent benefit, Aguayo says.

Next, the researchers recruited seven men who regularly played sports but were not competitive athletes. The men participated in an exercise test on three separate days. They cycled for 11 minutes on a stationary bicycle, alternating between periods of intense pedaling and rest. Before getting on the bike, each participant drank half a liter of one of three beverages: watermelon juice with 1.17 g of L-citrulline, watermelon juice enriched to have 6 g of L-citrulline, or a pink, fruity drink without watermelon or L-citrulline. On the day after the trials in which the men drank either type of watermelon juice, they reported essentially no leg soreness. Meanwhile, after the trials when they imbibed the placebo, they reported feeling sore.

The take-home message from this study, according to Thomas Swensen of Ithaca College, is that it’s better to drink unpasteurized watermelon juice than to take an L-citrulline supplement. Swensen says the next step would be to see if drinking the juice helps athletes perform better the next day because they are less sore. Aguayo plans to tweak the concentration of L-citrulline in watermelon juice to determine the optimal concentration for the prevention of muscle fatigue.

The Hierarchy puts these so called Watermelon sugar studies out to the western world who many are borderline Type II diabetics or are already diabetic...So people will eat boatloads of watermelon in the hope that it helps their blood pressure all the while putting their kidneys at risk with the onset of type II...Its no wonder that the bloodline who really love watermelon are also the bloodline with the highest risk of diabetes...
