and useless for most day to day activities i.e. functional strength.

How the hell is an exercise most people don't do overrated?  The most overrated exercise ever is the bench press and it is completely useless "for most day to day activities", as opposed to shoulders that are used for almost everything.  If you don't think so, try functioning with a torn rotator cuff.

I perform the seated variety.  Never liked the standing version.

My shoulders always sucked but once I started doing alot of work on the smythe machine they went up. I can military press 185 for strict reps with no leg drive six months ago i could only rep out 135 for a few reps especially at the lockout is where I was slow.
I am on  just under 1000mg of test though :D

They are best standing - wear a big and very good belt (spend the money on a good belt its worth every cent) - the important part is
I don't bring them all the way down but slightly below the chin and I dont lock out fully - when nearly locked out I force myself to look dead straight (you've got to do them infront of a mirror)

This makes the ghost of Serge Redding cry.......:(.

.

In terms of full body power, you could do a lot worse than Clean and Press and Deadlift for a quick overall workout.

I did these for about a year. I decided that the risk wasn't worth it after I saw a guy take the same weight that I was using, and did slow seated reps with it. :(

Do them seated.  I'm hitting delts, not my lower back.

I like both, standing (strict, not push press) and seated.

Standing 2 dumbell was a Reg Park favorite:

I always thought miltary presses were standing with a bb..anything else (db press, seated bb press) is just that, not a military. No?

Yeah, to be historically accurate, "military press" = standing/strict barbell press. But who really cares.  :D

Before the bench press became popular, that was the pressing lift that all the old timers did. They lacked the pectoral
development of what you see today, but they generally had a stronger core. For the most part, everything was done standing.

I like standing db presses, mainly because I'm not coordinated enough to kick them up while seated.

I prefer barbell for seated for that same reason.

Barbell or db, depends on the mood I'm in. It's always my first shoulder exercise, and sometimes only shoulder exercise as it's one of my better body parts.

Don't feel bad.
Lots of people have trouble kicking up the 140’s.

The massive weights required of your Herculean physicality render knee-kicks infeasible.

Seriously, from my experience, it seems pretty common for guys to get someone to hand them one db once they get up around the 90’s on seated.
But, it's all relative.
If 70's are as hard for you as 100's are for someone else, try using a training partner (or anyone you trust) to hand you one.

Love it, do it all the time.

Dumbbell, Barbell, Machine, always rotating the "tools" to use for the military press.

Used to love doing them standing with the barbell!

Now I can barely do them seated on the Smith Machine because of my hurt shoulder!  But, yeah they're awesome!

Anyone else use kettlebells for shoulder presses? It seems like my shoulder strength and whole body strength has gone way up using them.  Swing them up into a rack position and press them overhead.  I can one hand press a 48kg  (105.6lb) kb over my head 3 times and press 2 36kg bells each hand (79.2lb each). I know there is technique involved but it was difficult to two hand swing a 36kg kb when i first got it. It just feels way better than pressing a barbell or dumbbell. Much better rotation and movement. Shoulders don't get sore either. It feels like they are getting stronger from every angle and it translated to some really good functional strength.

Hand stand push ups are a good change too.

Couple of guys in my gym started doing KB's. Only thing is they actually are smaller and look weaker than they used to be. Swears by it though. Personally they are not for me so I do not care. I can easily rep a 40kg KB and it does not seem any harder than a 40kg DB imo.
