Title: for all you comics freak on GB !
Post by: Stavios on October 18, 2010, 10:59:06 AM
I need to do an oral presentation for my class about the history of the comics and their evolution in from the start.

I have been searching on the web but it's more about comics in general, not the "american comics"

some of you would have a good website for that ?

it's just for a french class..

it's a useless class where we have to do oral presentations on pretty much anything.. so they can evaluate how we speak  :-\

I know it sucks

Funny that America still has the best engineering schools in the world. I wonder what that says about the rest of them if places like MIT and Cal Tech are that bad.

Don't take it too seriously guys, just foolin' around.

Most of great inventions come or at least came from America. Plus schools everybody all around the world want to join are in America; MIT, Harvard and so on.

I have nothing against USA. Besides communistic president but that's just temporary phase.

I is smart!

Smart cause I know Quantum Mechanics good and not stupid enough to say I understand it.

That's a standard problem among us Quantum Mechanicals.

(Read "Dancing Wu Li Masters". It's a PDF file someplace on the internet. It will make you smart enough to simply realize how stupid we really are...... and how much more there is out there for us to discover and learn about.)

Oh, and there is a 'The Best of American Comics' annual. I have 2008, 2009, but I think it goes back to 2005, so that might give you a more recent perspective. Each has a 'guest' editor -ie. 2008 is Lynda Barry; 2009 is Charles Burns. Might be worth a look.

Agree on this to some point.

In Europe countries are way more socialist, that's absolutely true. But America now a days is under a huge dept-pile and practicing more socialist policy ain't helping a bit... it makes it worse as government needs to spend more money on health care, unemployment aid etc. European countries are now also because of getting into debt too much forced to cut their spending and put more responsibility to citizens them-self - that mean's cutting welfare benefits, raise retirement age and so on.

Even the great dollar is now depreciating in value against euro because of worries whether America in future manages to pay their debt and enjoy AAA rating in bond markets. I personally trust America as there have always been doubts and time and time again America have proved doubters wrong. But I still believe more capitalistic policy is required in request to see America blossoming in future also...

Speaking of comics, I once owned the original Superman comic ... the one with him holding the car over his head. Also owned some of the very first Disney comic books, but back then kids were discouraged to read "picture books".

Those old originals are locked up someplace in someone's attic and if they are ever found, the finder will be a very rich individual.

Spent lots of time in uni and got 3 degrees, but no real doctorate - I got that later, like I did my decoder ring, by sending in 10 boxtops. I kinda really think my education only really started after I left school - school was really good for 'learning how to learn,' if you know what I mean. Just being interested and active in stuff. As for IQ, don't have the foggiest, and don't much care. I'm really good at the word-based, but just barn blind when it comes to stuff with numbers. Sudoku gets me seasick.

i think iq is over rated! in fact i think that for most people, there is no difference in cognitive capacity, there is only differences in motivation to learn and amount of knowledge aquired. intelligence, as i see it, is reallly about the ability to learn, retain, and understand concepts. just because a person hasnt came across a certain concept, doesnt mean they arent able to comprehend it.

that doesnt answer you question though. its 135. according to an online test. but idk how dependable that is

Doc, You sound like me but I only went to school to carry my lunch and join the Corps and shoot the bad guys and learn top secret stuff that was found on the 2nd page of that morning's paper.

But I can blow up a bridge real good.

I also got that decoder ring plus a number of others that made me an official member of the Lone Ranger club, plus one that you could look into with one eyeball and see the creation of the universe, and the ring that was as big as your fist that you could hide secret messages inside.

Each of those items are probably worth more than that original Superman comic I once had in my possession.

I also don't know my IQ and don't want to know it cause all my friends with extremely high IQ are dumb as shit when it comes to ordinary living. Especially my Nuclear-Reactor-Startup-Engineer friend.

And at one time I worked with a few very high IQ guys who were known as the major part of Kennedy's Think Tank and that was one hell of an experience which I hope to never forget. They assumed that I was a part of their group and that alone shows how smart they were.

My job with those very intelligent guys was only to escort them around during their off duty hours and keep them out of trouble in some Asian war zone. And that didn't take too many brain cells on my behalf.

Thanks, Bomz, Based on reading a few of your GetBig posts, I'd assume that that's about right. I'm not too sure about my own IQ because it was 'discovered' a long while back but I think it was 108 or possibly 118 which makes me either average or superior to the rest of you GetBiggers (SEE IQ rankings below.)

(BUT I IS MUCH SMARTER NOW cause I learned nu stuff since then. So with your permission, Bomz, I'll say for the record that my IQ is one point higher that your own which I can't find right now.)

Over 140 - Genius or near genius
120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence
110 - 119 - Superior intelligence
90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence
80 - 89 - Dullness
70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency
Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness

it was a LACK of regulations and oversight that got us into economic trouble in the first place! and your solution is to re-instate the cause of the problem?

Well...
I'm not big believer in regulation. If markets are allowed to work freely they correct the mistakes automatically. That's not proved in practice simply because pure market economy and capitalism have never been in use in any country. These days capital moves rapidly. If regulation in one country gets too tight, corporations find another location to operate. So money markets and others should not be regulated too much. Many people complain about CDOs and other sophisticated instruments that came known to public during financial crisis. The fact is they are new inventions just like inventions in more traditional areas. They didn't work perfectly but they just need more gestation - heck, wind turbines don't work perfectly, it's always a thing with new inventions. Financial engineering is a term I like to use... why should there be more regulation in that area?

But what I was talking in my previous message is that now under huge debt USA needs actually cut the government spending. Not increase it. Government should not be involved in pretty much anything else than in defense and in national security. It just needs to serve people safe to ownership and freedom to practice their business. Taxes should be so minimal that it is only enough to guarantee those basic functions.  Pretty much everything else is communism and in long haul leads to increasing debt. Increasing debt (result of increasing spending) leads to tax raises... that leads to poorer business possibilities and
continually increasing cost level thereafter, many other disorders occur also.

My favorite American saying goes something like this; Government is not a solution - it's a problem.

okay! you arent stupid- just misinformed.

the idea that a free market works best left alone- ie "laizzes faire" is incorrect.

the idea is based upon the notion that those who engage in trade will do what is best for the economy as a whole. but they do not. when left unregulated, the market will be manipulated to sevre the greed of those with the capital. this is why government regulations are absolutely necessary when delaing with business, expecially large scale corporations.

capitalism is a great system, very efficient at many things, but it does not ensure economic stability nor economic equality. capitalism promotes economic freedoms, while strict communism would complete abolish economic freedoms. which is one of the big reasons why communism is flawed.

cutting government spending to boost economy? that isnt logical. only if you mean to say that you will also cut taxes. and then, yes, that may have some benefits: more capital in the hands of the traders. but the role of government is not exclusive to national defense only. taxes are bnecessary because the government needs to protect all peoples rights to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. this includes providing for the people things which are necessary that they connaot provide for themselves on their own. the government, in essence, is strictly an organization designed to pool together the poeples resources in an effort to maintain a liveable country free of threats to the peoples life (military, police, fire, healthcare), liberty (judicial system), pusuit of happyness (transportation, post office, education, etc). all of these things are things the people are unable to provide for themselves, and things the government must do for them. if left alon to private business, these services would be corrupted and there would be no guarantee of universal coverage, equality, fairness, etc.

please do reply with any refuations you have in concern to my premise(s).

it's just for a french class..

it's a useless class where we have to do oral presentations on pretty much anything.. so they can evaluate how we speak  :-\

I know it sucks

Make sure you include the World reknowned "100 Bullets" and American Century, also ElfQuest.
