Missouri man who says he was unjustly roughed up by police officer challenges him to fight
BRYNES MILL, Missouri - A Missouri man is protesting his arrest in a very unusual way. He says he was roughed up by a police officer in Byrnes Mill, south of Saint Louis.
But instead of filing a complaint, the man is challenging the officer to a fight.
Rich Stephens has painted a sign on his pickup truck that reads “What’s short, fat and round all over? A Brynes Mill cop.”
Stephens says everywhere he goes, people honk their horns and give them a thumbs up.
“It’s been overwhelming,” Stephens says.
But that’s not the only thing he did. He also took out a full page ad in a Jefferson County newspaper claiming Byrnes Mill police officer Tim Walker kicked him and shoved him into a police car for no reason.
The ad challenges walker to a mixed martial fight. He'd even sell tickets.
But his idea of a joke - is no laughing matter to the Byrnes Mill Police Department.
"my opinion is it's borderline harassment and making a threat against a law enforcement officer,” said police chief Ed Locke.
Stephens says he wouldn’t pocket any of the money and would donate it all to charity. “I don't want a nickel, I just want his head on my hand is what I want."
Stephens decided not to file a formal complaint saying he expects more results this way. The police chief says formal complaints are investigated and feels poking fun of the police goes too far.
"If every officer that pulled someone over and they weren't happy if they were challenged to a fighting match,” Locke said, “Certainly those officers would all be suspended or lose their job."
Stephens has yet to hear from Officer Walker, but says he hopes he will accept the invitation.

I kinda like this guy.. While the officer has nothing to gain and risks losing a lot taking him up on the offer, i.e. later litigation for injuries to the guy, policy violations of his e departments general orders and loss of time at work for injuries he may suffer, it's a pretty funny situation. Kinda a throwback to junior high
-
Bitch ass, if everybody thinks that the officers treated them unjustly---even the ones who "use foul language", this is becoming a bitch ass society..."I'm sooo important"
-
Thing is, he didn't file a complaint which is all too typical these days... it's a novel harmless approach..
-
Bitter tiny tit who got his ass whupped..... :'(

Maybe this guy should fight that cop that kicked Kimbo's ass?
-
Good move.
Filing a formal complaint is probably just as useless in the US as it would be in Europe.
I hope he's not going to get into trouble for doing this.
Society needs more people like that.

i dunno i was a military cop which is different but i seen cops all the time just go overboard on shit and always tryin to make it look like they kicked ass cause they threw the big guy around while he was in cuffs ,ive seen this all to often by cops. my dad who ran the swat team in toledo said he would see patrolman doin this on a regular basis....gota understand alota cops DO HIDE behind their badges...and sure there are a hell of alot of good cops to. but just like any job you have people who are shitty at them or in this case abuse their power.
i love that this guy is callin him out and wants to sell tickets for charity, great approach and if the cop had balls he would talk to his chief and get it approvd and fight the guy straight up for charity hell get it sanctioned is what his guy should do than the cop is really on the hook to fight him or look like a pussy....love this!!!

And if the dude loses? Then what, if somethig did go down, which I don't think it did, because he is protesting too much...he would have sued the police dept and made more money than he would for the actual fight...

Problably around half or more deserve it for some reason or another.

Oh i have stories, some of certain populace thinks that only blacks and latins should be arrested, and giving them (that % of the populace) a ticket or arresting them is harassment. "You'll hear from my Congressman!", "Why don't you go arrest illegal immigrants instead of hardworking Americans (never mind he just beat up his wife and threaten to set fire to the apartment building)", I could go on...
Why, do you have to take it there?

No one deserves anything like that asshole...white, black, brown or yellow...That's what courts are for...

I've been harrased by the police before I know how bad it sucks. I didn't talk back to them and act like an ass though.
Im just making a point. Most of the videos you see people start running their mouths off to the cops or trying to fight back. They expect not to be roughed up a little bit.

I've been beaten up by police before, advice : take the beating and move on .

The cop can't fight the guy even if he wanted. there is likely a case pending in court for whatever he was originally arrested for.
It's a lose lose for the cop and the department so it will never take place and set a horrible precedent if it did.
I've been a military cop and civillian cop and while I've seen my share of police getting carried away, it has diminished quite significantly in the past 10 yrs which is a great thing. I never was the kind of cop to take advantage of my authority and detested those who did, so I am happy to see us coming into the 21st century. Having said that, there are still some neanderthal departments with a few good officers, a few highly professional departments with a few neanderthal cops.. but the general direction of policing is heading towards a kinder, gentler policing policy.
But if this guy truly feels he was treated improperly then an official complaint is the way to go, let the chips fall where they may. We just had a recent incident here in Austin where a DPS trooper took offense to something a drunk said on a cap metro bus and came on board and shook the guy and threatened to take him to jail. He jerked him around a bit, yelled at him then let him go. It was caught on video and now he is in hot water... It always puzzles me how a cop with any time under his belt can let a drunk upset him by saying "Come on buddy, hurry up, we got places to go!"...

Got into an argument with a crazy girlfriend one night. She started get beligerent trying to smack me in the face. I kicked one of her legs out from underneath her. She ran to the cops and told them I beat her up. I took off into an alley. About 4-5 cops swarmed me I thought I was gonna get my ass beat. Thank god they didn't. My girlfriend ran over and told them they got the wrong guy hahah. I guess she had a change of heart.

Wait a minute! So you are saying that 4-5 cops had you cornered in an alley and DIDN'T beat your ass?? This goes against every thing I've been told..... I'm confused...

I kind of new one of the cops he was a customer and my ma and dads restraunt. I didn't argue with them I just kept my mouth shut. I think if I said one wrong thing or made any kind of move it would of been lights out. A friend of mine got hit in the back of the head by one of those same cops a different night. His head had to be stapeled shut. He might be able to sue for excessive force.

Sorry Wiggs, but I don't agree. The VAST majority of the time, if someone does what the cops say, there is no problem. This guy was probably either running his mouth, or wouldn't get in the car.....so he got a little boost. Oh well.....I bet he does what the police ask next time.

People who keep their big mouths shut have a way greater chance of not getting harmed by the police.

It's been said before, but Chris Rocks video should be required material prior to graduation and during drivers license renewals

Exactly. i have honestly never seen a video of the police beating somebodys ass who wasn't either running their trap or actually not co-operating. and never encountered it in person either.
Example, I got pulled over for speeding....70 in a 55.....I kept both hands on the wheel and was polite to the cop. After running my license, he gave me a warning and flat-out told me that my attitude is why i didn't get a ticket. I thanked him and eased away. Now, if i had started yapping and complaining when he walked up to the car, what are the odds I would have a ticket right now?

I would have ticketed you for Driving While Black, but that's just me. ;D

haha, BOOM !!!! You aren't going to believe this but on my license previous to this, they had my race listed as black.....no shit.....I never bothered to get it fixed until I renewed. The lady, who was black, who did it laughed her butt off at it.

I'm sorry to hear that. At my department complaints are fielded by a Citizens Review Panel intake who reviews the initial complaint and if it warrants investigation it is forwarded to Internal Affairs where they don't have the option of laughing and throwing it away. If they deem it a minor possible offense it is forwarded to the offending officers supervisor where they are required to review the details, video tape and if deemed appropriate, take corrective action. We take these complaints seriously because we want to have a professional police department. We get paid a lot of money relatively speaking, and because we are paid a professional wage, the community expects professional officers.
I don't know if your friend is exaggerating for the sake of sounding cool or not, if he isn't, it saddens me because every time one of his co workers pulls some crap that gets on national TV, it makes us all look like we just came out of the 60's. I got no problems taking some bad ass to jail who needs it, and even using force if necessary, which is often the case, but it can be done 10 out of 10 times without coming off as a street thug in a blue uniform...
-
fucking with me cause im a teenageer, with a little bit of gold and a pager, searching my car, looking for the product, thinking every guy is selling narcitics.
i mean they would rather see me in the pen, then me and lorenzo rolling in the benzo, beating the police outta shape, and when we finished, bring the yellow tape.

Will ask him if he was joking or serious.. certainly this is well known about most PD's..look at the reputation LAPD or NYPD has..
