Why don't we hear about all the other countries and their alcohol related problems-- or M.A.D.D. and A.A. and all that shit?
How come in our country teens snort anything and everything they can get their hands on? Why don't European countries rant about their teenage populus having all the severe mental, alcohol and drug problems the U.S. has?
We are one of the VERY few countries that actually has the oldest minimum legal drinking age?
What's wrong with this picture? Thoughts?

I think alot of it has to do with how spread out US cities are...
most ppl in the US cant just walk down the street to a bar or use public transportation... :-\
just a thought Im sure this doesnt apply to alot of other countries though
-
All those anti-alcohol related organizations are just an extension of the US attitude about drinking being "bad." EVERYBODY was a drinker and europe, especially Germany, and they didn't go any stupid meetings.
-
As an FYI I was the president of S.A.D.D at our high school ;D
I agree though 21 is stupid... in other countries where its 16 and 18, people are taught at a young age to control their drinking, in many countries its looked down upon if you can't handle your liquor.
Cheezy!
-
21 is just stupid. Here it's 18, sounds reasonable, though it could even be like Denmark, where it's 16. People are gonna drink anyway.
I saw a drunk hoe the other day maybe like 14.

12 here

18 here.

I think its our culture I mean its celebrated here most 21 yr olds dont go out to just have a couple drinks they go out with the intention of getting totally drunk.
Its like ppl are looking for a funny drunk story to tell the day after.

While the legal drinking age where I live is 18, we have clubs here that don't allow anyone under 21 in as most kids 'can't hold their liquor', so to speak.
Alcohol + kids = stupidity trouble
The number of 'incidents' at the clubs which cater to older clientèle is vastly lower than the 'kiddie clubs'.
-
It's 19 in Canada and it's these guys that are in the majority of problems at a club/bar. High test levels and immaturity mixed with alcohol isn't a good combination.

driving a deadly weapon at 16 but not allowed to have a beer before 21 haha.
Somethings WRONG lol.

You were trying to be funny, right? Fail. Think about your hastily written words before I school you on the childishness of it. Oh, and this doesn't mean I don't think highly of you. What I think of you is entirely dependent upon the words you put down here to express what you are thinking.
The quote shown above is anything but thinking, especially from someone as intelligent as you should be.

Ok lets make it easier for you to understand,
Driving a car at 16 but not allowed to drink before 21 is Fucked up. I would rather see a 17 yr old having a few beers that being immature with his friends speeding with a 2 ton potential deadly weapon thats for sure.
do ... you ...understand?

what kills me...We can send 18 year olds off to foreign countries, but they can't have a drink in a bar..FUCK THAT (unless they drink on a base, which if not mistaken is still 18 for active duty)

swede owns you newbie.
shut up before you get ripped into pieces by the mob.

I've personally never understood the reasons people pound alcohol.
-
I don't believe that most European teens even really know what a Perc or Vic is...
it's just funny in a weird kind of way. Some countries don't even monitor the alcohol consumption. Strangeness.
I know that most teens smoke in other countries too. It's totally "accepted"

Do you think prostitution should be legal universally in the US?
-
it was 18 years ago in the US.
but alcohol (especially hard stuff) has long been considered evil here.
is it the Puritanical roots of the country?
cultural uses (wine and beer seen as 'food' for millenia in europe, whereas whiskey has been more prevalent since the beginning of america, and its certainly not seen as food)?
or is just the moronic scapegoating that happens so often? i.e. 'my dumbass kid got drunk and killed himself in a car, so now no one can drink!' - much like that guy in bigger, stronger, faster whose 17 year old kid was already on anti-depressants, was a drunk, etc., but it was steroids that done killed his boy!

Well first off dude it's way better for some 16 year old kid to learn to drive with the supervision and boundaries created by parents. I have friends that learned to drive while living on their own and they can't drive for shit. They learn enough to past the test and that's it. My parents taught me how to be a good god dam driver, being in a car is fucking dangerous, espeacially in polar bear country.
As far as why american's got such a high drinking age is cultural. The religious nut jobs won't teach their kids to drink while in high school. So soon as kids get to colledge they become retarted messes, and in a culture of irresponsibilty it's far easier to push up the drinking age, then ever making honest hard working americans take ownership of themselves.

I personally think it would be better if the drinking age and military involvement age would increase to the same age that parents can no longer claim their children as dependents on their tax return.....about 24 if I remember correctly.

Wow. ;D You certainly showed me the door. ;) If that is a piece of your mind, it must be very small indeed. Look here ace, swede owns nothing save your undying love as shown by your feeble attempt to belittle me. Here's the truth mudturtle, a prophet is welcomed everywhere but his own country, however an idiot such as your self is needed in every village across the land. ;)
Clever little man. You're such a smart ass I bet you could sit on a tub of ice cream and tell us all what flavor it is. ;D ;D ;D

Let me make myself clear to you, my friend. Allowing a child to drink is folly. Allowing a child to drink while "stupervised" by an adult or with other children is just as dumb. Allowing a child to drink alcohol and have access to an automobile is just plain stupid.
What is the common link in those three statements? We are talking about a child. Children. People too young to know better. And you, you really should know better. I think that you do, but chose instead to take a more liberal populist point of view in an attempt to earn points with like-minded people.
Alcohol is not for children. Or the childish.
-

to this I agree to some extent. If your kid is active duty and not at home, wtf can you claim them as a dependent. I think 24 is high to claim a child as a dependent unless, that child is full time student and for the most part your supporting them in school

What Im saying is thats its ironic to trust a 16 yr old with driving a 2 ton car but not to have a few beers. Because everyone will drink whenever they want anyway, but everyone aint gonna drive a car if they are not allowed,
therefore drinking at 16 and driving at 21 would make more sense if we had to compare the two. 18 for both as in sweden is good imo. your average 16 yr old is way to immature to handle a car. And if you dissagree then they should be mature enough to handle a drink also.
I dont know if I have to add that I dont mean at the same time ofc
to sum it up:
If the goverment think you're mature enough to handle a potentially deadly weapon to Anyone it comes in contact with you should be mature enough to handle a few beers with your friends.

No. If the child has been properly taught and is of sound mind and body and their parents trust them, then the law allows them to drive once they have proven as much. Here in California children that possess a license may only drive themselves or certain family members until they reach (I believe) the age of 18. One reason this was done was to try and prevent accidents in which young and irresponsible drivers also killed their school age friends or young family members when they drove recklessly. You know, driving like a fool to impress their peers? Sounds like drinking to impress ones peers.
Putting alcohol into your body changes things and I suspect you know this. It lowers inhibitions to an extent as well as reduces reaction times even in small amounts. Of course it varies person to person, but still you must realize that it is not a good idea to have children drink alcoholic beverages.

Oh , Im sure EVERYONE follows those laws lol. at 16 you WILL speed with your car, you WILL try and impress your friends in the backseat. Speeding with a 2 ton car compared to having a few beers? whats more dangerous?
and I didnt say kids should drink, I think 18 is a good age. I dont however think 16 is a good driving age. your average 16 yr olds mind is weak, do they test peer pressure in the test? ???
and how the fuck is the slowing of reaction time relevant to this discussion ?!?!?! after I even made sure I mention I didnt mean drinking and driving to all the retards that would Somehow think I did.
-
The words "child" and "sound mind and body" do NOT belong in the same sentence...not even "teenager"... nope.

Actually, all the bases I was ever on, it was 21....but it wasn't like it was a problem to find it and often people just looked the other way when they knew you were underage.....first day I was in Iceland, I was barely 19 and got snockered with our commanding officer.... ;D

Me neither MOS,me neither....

Alcohol sucks anyways, they should give steroids to the kids.

wow really? I remember it used to be 18 back in the late 80's, well at least in San Diego. But wtf cared we wen't to Tijuana
