Their hopes long since dashed, Americans
at large yesterday rendered a harsh verdict
on the first two years of President Obama's
administration, as well as on the
Democratic leadership of both houses of
Congress.
The tide surged hard to the right in the
midterm elections on pentup
disappointment - and outright anger -
among voters who saw a gaping disconnect
between their needs and the policies of
Obama and the troops on Capitol Hill.
They wanted jobs. They got a year's worth
of wrangling over health care.
They wanted fiscal prudence. They got $14
trillion worth of national debt.
They wanted bipartisan pragmatism. They
got partisan paralysis.
In the end, they wanted change. At the first
opportunity, they ordered it.
So long, Madame Speaker.
Carry on, Mr. President, but not as you
were.
The electorate has become a punishing
pendulum, with independent voters
swinging back and forth; this time lopping
Democratic heads, last time beheading
Republicans. In the glow of Obama's 2008
victory, there were idylls that he would be
the one to hold the center. And, more, that
he would lay the groundwork for long
Democratic domination.
Didn't work out. No, sir.
Loyalists will blame the economy for
Obama's plunge in fortunes. He should not
subscribe to such easy rationalization. The
polls are clear that Americans understand
Obama inherited a downturn verging on a
depression. But, just as clearly, too many
Americans disagree with his response.
While stimulus spending was in order,

Call (888) 393-3760Advertisement Obama delegated design of the $787
billion program to congressional Democrats
who undermined its credibility and
effectiveness by larding the bill with pet c
auses. Debt-ridden America recoiled.
Then, seemingly determined to go down
with flag flying, Obama made health care
an all-consuming obsession - never mind
that, at best, much of the public had other
priorities or, at worst, viewed the legislation
as a frightening government overreach.
The President answered, in effect, that
those concerns were exaggerated, if not
illegitimate. This was audacity triumphing
over wisdom at great cost.
In the waning days of the campaign,
Democrats offered explanations galore for
the onrushing comeuppance. They said
they'd failed to communicate great
successes, that they'd been swamped by
mystery money. And Obama patronizingly
said that when people are afraid, they
don't think straight.
This is not the way forward.
Like Presidents before him, Obama must
make a midcourse correction. Not a slight
adjustment; a significant turn. He has no
choice.
He must devote unwavering attention to job
growth and deficit reduction. And he must
extend genuine offers of cooperation to
Republicans.
As for the GOP, newly stocked with hard-
line Tea Partyers, polls show that the vote
was a repudiation of policy choices Obama
made and how he executed them - not a
wholesale embrace of the Republican
platform or leaders.
These newly empowered ladies and
gentlemen would be smart to remember
that the American people stand as ready to
taketh as to giveth.

Can you believe that there were some liberals claiming that this was not a referendum on Obama and his policies? Unbelievable. Olbermann, Matthews and Maddow have to be the dumbest humans in God's green earth.
