First and foremost I have to say that Bas IS the nicest guy not only in MMA but in the world.  THe guy is awesome and a amazing fighter

now there is the question the validity of his PANCRASE FIGHTS

Now, he has always said that none of his fights were "works" and I take him at his word actually.  So, I think his win number isn't inflated by wins that were "works".  However, alot of fights in PANCRASE (at that time) were works (youtube search Ken Shamrock vs Matt Hume for a example)

Also, I think he gets no credit for actually taking the time to improve his overall ground game.  Granted he is no Gunnar Nelson on the ground but he is very proficent for a guy just started out as a Dutch Thai boxer

Despite the two losses to Ken Shamrock (and that isn't a knock on Ken; i'm just pointing out a huge blemish on Bas' record) Bas is easily in the top 10 all time

if anything I was saying that Bas seemed like the only guy in PANCRASE at that time who wasn't doing worked fights.  I'm sorry if my verbose post didnt express that

Rickson couldn't handle Bas because Bas wasn't a Japanese tomato can like all the other wins that were on his record

How would he do ?

you mean nowadays? He was a great fighter for his time, but today he would be average. But, that holds true for anyone as the sport just evolves and gets better.

If you listen to the Rogan Experience podcast, Joe & Eddie Bravo tell some hilarious stories about Bas.  He was super nice and fucking CRAZY.

In the old era, I rate Mauricio Rua and Vovchanchin as the best.

For showmanship Sakuraba is IMO still the greatest ever.

I'm not sure he's even officially retired.

Notice all the open palm strikes?

Most fools don't realize that without gloves and tape, open palm strikes are more effective than a closed fist and breaking your hand on a guys' noggin.

Closed fist punching was not allowed in Pancreas, which is why you see all the slapping.  However, Bas was one of the first guys to figure out how to do solid uppercuts & hooks with the open hand.  And, he brought serious kicking into the game.  Most japs didn't know what hit them...

Open palm strikes are brutal when done correctly.
