Ultra illegal. They catch doc's and med staff all the time stealing opiates, my mom was involved in setting up a whole list of check lists. They count pill in hopitals like there coke dealers.

When I was in Medical school, but prior to working for NASA, we were told that we would be allowed to do whatever we wanted.

Technically, not supposed to do so.

Why?  Because in order to prescribe any medication, you should have done an OBJECTIVE physical assessment of a person, followed by diagnosing based not just on presenting symptoms, but also on evidence from lab work.

It is hard to be OBJECTIVE when you are prescribing for yourself.  You can empirically treat something you suspect yourself of having, but its best to have an outsider examine you.

Will a Doctor get caught for self prescribing medication?  Most likely not.

Can it look bad if you get reviewed?  Yes.

Will anyone really give you shit about prescribing yourself Prevacid? No.

Steroid or Pain Killers?  You're gonna get caught.

I don't think there will be a problem until you go to narcotics.

Even steroids shouldn't be a problem, but when was the last time your Doc was 230 @ 6%?

this is unrelated, but here goes...

why doesn't some doctor in Florida, or Eastern Kentucky get three really close friends (or family) and write them a decent size (but under the radar) prescription for Oxycontin then sell all the pills to some dealer and some real $$$

???

It's not that easy to do.  You have to validate the need for those things.

The DEA keeps a tight grip on those types of drugs.

Harrumph. Total nonsense, tommy. My own narcotic prescriptions are within the realm of my good colleague, Dr. k&^ &et6ye7fke. Any more talk, and I'll do you for libel, or, er, that medical-lawyer stuff.

Which is why when most doctors "need" those things they just go to one of their friends who are doctors.

True, but if you are suffering from something that you'd much rather not mention to others, it can become difficult.

I know a guy that has himself on Antidepressants and would never go to a fellow Doctor.
