Mystery Missile Launch Seen off Calif. Coast
CBS News ^ | 11/9/10 | CBS
(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.
CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.
KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.
Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.
Video here
"It's spectacular… It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".
Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.
A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.
On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.
Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.
When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.
"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine … to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.
Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.
Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.

This is totally nuts.

This is a very weird event, at this stage at least and most of the information is conflicting.
Some say that the object was launched from sea (hinting it could be a BM from a submarine).
This wired.com article adds even more explanations:
L.A.’s Mystery ‘Missile’ Is Probably a Jet

That mystery “missile” launched last night off of the coast of Los Angeles? It probably wasn’t a missile at all, several leading defense analysts say.
The various arms of the U.S. military scrambled this morning to explain the creepy footage, snapped by a CBS news helicopter, of what appeared to be a missile flying into the air, not far from Los Angeles. U.S. Strategic Command, Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, Air Force Global Strike Command, the Navy and the Missile Defense Agency were all left struggling to give an answer for what appeared to be a rogue ICBM. But to GlobalSecurity.org director John Pike, there’s an easy explanation: “It is obviously an airplane.”
“The aircraft is flying towards the observer; the air over the Pacific is clear, so the contrail is visible all the way to the horizon. This creates the optical illusion of a rocket flying up, rather than the actual situation of an airplane flying horizontally,” Pike tells Danger Room. “The object generating the contrail is moving too slowly to be a rocket; the contrail is not expanding as the ‘rocket’ gains ‘altitude’ — which would be the case as the exhaust plume expanding into less dense high altitude air.”
MIT astronomer Jonathan McDowell tells New Scientist pretty much the same thing. Although he does note that the Navy owns a missile target and launch facility at nearby San Nicolas Island.
This wouldn’t be the first time a plane was mistaken for a missile. On New Year’s Eve, an aircraft was photographed above San Clemente, California, looking eerily missile-esque. In December, 2008, there was a similar case of mistaken identity when a plane flew near the coastal town of Carmel.
“The short explanation is that we don’t see a lot of jet contrails head-on, especially from the vantage point of a helicopter. So, it looks like a missile to everyone else,” writes Danger Room alum (and New America Foundation analyst) Jeffrey Lewis. “But it probably isn’t.”
He adds, “That would explain why no one else in L.A. saw a missile launch other than the helicopter crew — or, rather, why everyone else from every other angle saw a typical jet contrail — and why [America's missile-warning system] didn’t light up like a Christmas Tree.”

Do you really think the pentagon doesn't know anything about this? Obviously they aren't letting on to everything they know. SoCal is the proving grounds for various defense contractors who routinely launch missiles and other "things". Not uncommon, I have pictures of a missile launch over LA from 6 years ago.
-
What's really weird is that when you look towards Catalina from the shore, you do not see it at all.
But if you were to put on a pair of "blue blocker" sun glasses, ...there it is clear as day. It used to freak me out.
Could this have been the weird event I have been anticipating?
Or could this be "the event" that Samson spoke about that could somehow transform Obama's image with the public?
Does anyone know what if anything was hit by the missile or whatever it was?

I saw this comment on AOL... and it makes sense...
First of all, who believes ANYTHING the military EVER says? They denied the existence of the Blackbird, the U-2, the Stealths...need I continue the list? Of course they are behind this launch, and of course they know all about it, and of course they aren't telling YOU the truth. They have their agenda and YOU are not privy to it. Think about it, if this was truly a "mystery" launch, with no known source, do you really think they'd just calmly sit around and say, "Hmm, beats me, don't know"? No, you addle-pated simpletons(tv news people)! Every nuclear silo in the nation would be opened and made ready for imminent attack, Patriot missle batterys everywhere would be powered up, the ships at Point Mugu (about 15 to 20 miles from the missile's launch site) would go on high alert and put to sea immediately, The Army, NORAD, Air Force, and the Canadian forces would be put on high alert, every available B-!, Stealth, and B-52 in our nuclear arsenal would be scrambled and we would have had air raid sirens blasting from the Mexican border to the Arctic Circle. If this was truly an unknown missile from a "mystery source" our defence forces would consider this nation under attack and all hell would break loose within about five minutes. We'd be at DefCon 1, for Pete's sake! The President would be flown home immediately and sent to Cheyenne Mountain, the Congress and Supreme Court would be evacuated, and Civil Defense orders to start evacuating cities would go into effect. If a foreign power got this close and launched a ballistic weapon, or payload carrying device, we'd be at nuclear war readiness and none of us would be sitting in our homes or offices right now reading or writing these posts. By the way, it is pure baloney what the article says about the military never testing stuff so close to a major populated area. They launch stuff from Vandenberg all the time that goes out over the ocean easily that close. The jets swoop up and down the coast, and they tested the Aurora so close that our windows rattled with the sonic booms for months, not to mention the fact that Edwards AFB is so close to Palmdale and Lancaster, also major population areas. Such drivel. Sleep well, kids, you military is watcing, and working quietly to protect you, they just don't feel it is necessary to tell you every single thing they do.

This was not an airplane nor was it a contrail. Both of those explanations make zero fucking sense. Plus if it was an airplane it should be easy to identify what type, where was going, where it landed, should have seen it on radar etc. Let's say it was an enemy airplane say some sort of Chinese or Russian superfighter or some shit. That's just as bad. In all honesty I believe it was either a secret launch by the US military or it was a stealth advanced submarine launch from a foreign power. The latter seems the most plausible but if the US military whatever it was knows exactly what it was. Hence why they aren't talking. And playing dumb.

the timing is very suspect...
Obama's throwing down with world leaders regarding the future role of the US Dollar...
and suddenly, we have what could be a sub-based ICBM launched for the entire world to see?
Someone is showing how big their figurative cawk is, bragging about weapons technology. Either an enemy is sending us a message, or we're sending the world a message. I'm sure this is all above our getbig pay grade, however :)

That's what I was thinking. Seen both many times and that's a missile. I have no idea what or why. I don't even have a theory at this point.
Could this have been NK fucking around? I don't think China would be this stupid but who knows... But getting that close undetected is highly unlikely.
either way, this is serious enough that it needs to be answered and fast.
Then maybe stealth our asses right over someone's captial with some fireworks :D

eh, we all know there will be some released statement soon "it was a missile test we forgot about" LOL...
I think somebody was sending someone a message. The heads of the world are battling over dollar dominance, and somebody (possibly) launches a sub-based missile, and our defenses aren't elevated in the least? maybe it's the USA saying "Yes, go ahead and collapse our economy... we'll bury your capital cities with sub-based missiles like this one"... or another country saying "see what we can do".
All we can do is speculate until it's tube8 time, then move on to complaining about Palin's latest feud with a reporter or how much of her own monday ms Obama spends on clothing.

if this ends up being a "sent message"
There will be blood.

There's a lot of criminal activity involving Somali Muslims loyal to Al Shabaab in Southern California right now. I think we know where to point the finger.

.. maybe some private individual was determined to cause an uproar and somehow got his hands on a honest-to-goodness missile and the means to launch it. Sounds probable to me.

And we don't elevate our defenses in the least? People are launching missiles over Cali and they don't even put extra manpower in the area?
Sorry, but IMO, if "some guy" decided to fire missiles over Cali, there would be such a police force in that area it would make your head spin. "We dunno what it was, and we're doing nothing about it" is kinda a sign they're not concerned with what would be the most concerning event in 10 years

I might buy some hobbiest or private individual if it was launched from land. there's been civilian missle launches going back 30-40 years at least and some of them pretty big. but this being launched from open sea, I dunno... if that's the case, starting to look like a bond movie from the 60's ;D
-
Even if it was an accidental military launch, which it most likely was, there is no way they would admit it. Hell, people panic over much less.
-
Even if it was an accidental military launch, which it most likely was,
"Accidental" missiles launches... is there a history of this happening? Seems like with all the fears of what that could lead to, they would have some failsafe in place to prevent this. And if that's the case, why not disable/self destruct it immediately after launch? Why let it go sky high?
I see no other logical explanation than an intentional launch designed as a show of force, for whatever purpose.
-

we've learned of much worse accidents than this, unless it was a nuke being launched toward a target and aborted last minute, beyond that being the case people didn't seem phased a bit.

240, there have been other ones, trust me. And most would go unreported unless something like this happened where it's caught on film.....there is a shitload the govt doesn't tell the general public. And if it was anything with a payload, you wouldn't want to detonate it if its headed out to sea, where I presume this one ended up.
Hugo, they will pick and choose which events to report. Our public is so scared of its own shadow, combined with do you really think the way politicians operate in this day and time that they would risk getting blamed for this in some way? There are a shitload of military bases in San Diego, so to think that somehow this launch would happen without someones imagery system picking it up, is HIGHLY unlikely.
the only other scenario I could see is it being possible terrorists, and the govt doesn't want a public panic or the bad press.....
It pretty much has to be one of the two, imo.

u make good points. but for it to happen at the exact same moment obama is staring down the world leaders on economy - then him admitted the US is losing some power - sheeeit, it's just too much of a coincidence that a missile goes up over populated Cali areas at the same time. Maybe some enemiy fired a dud as obama sat at the table to 'just remind him' of their power, who knows.
I just see the timing as too suspect. An "accident" as obama and world leaders do the G20 showdown? nah...

There is NO WAY on earth a missle could be launched from a sea platform and us not know about it.....no way possible.....not that close to the coast.....hell, its damn near impossible anymore to launch anywhere on earth (a missle that size) and it not be picked up.....that was a very substantial sized missle, no doubt.....
as for it being some type of "look how big our dick is" during the G20, I just don't see it.....you would want to do a test that is well publicized for that, not deny some inadvertent launch over one of your own heavily populated city....just doesn't add up....

North Korea launching a missile from California ? Tricky...
I don't think it was a dick swing either - USA does not have to prove anything about it's missiles.

i didn't realize the vid was taken from a helicopter so it totally distorts it.......most likely a contrail from experts on the subject.....just a plane flying away from the vantage point......pretty wild.

Oh dear, 240 is on the case. Everything isn't a CT my friend..... the experts I saw on TV were independent.....besides, like I said there is NO WAY it was a missle launch without us knowing about it....not in that location......so you can either accept my explanation that is was inadvertent launch that we won't admit to making or this theory of the plane.......take your choice because anything else is left up to the tinfoil hat/mind control/aliens to figure out.....

see, you guys believe the statement that the pentagon doesn't know what it is.

240 - do you think they knwew about WMD in Iraq or were F'NG Clueless on that?
they knew the only WMD were the ones we sold them. And UN inspections proved that.
Iraq was dropping the dollar in 2003, threatening our economy. That alone is reason to invade, which is what we promptly did.
But the grownups already knew that. The kiddies are chasing each other around screaming about WMD lol...

Apparently there have been reports of weird aerial and underwater phenomena off Catalina island for many years (40+)

240 - do you think they knwew about WMD in Iraq or were F'NG Clueless on that?
333, they knew there wasn't WMD in Iraq. Unless you're counting the rusty leftovers from before the gulf war. Otherwise they wouldn't have had to plagiarize old intel for Powell to spew and pull sneaky bullshit like they did with the yellow cake forgeries.

Wasn't there a prophecy of some sort that a nation would screw up and launch a nuke that landed in open waters, polluting the sea and causing many subsequent deaths from radiation poisoning? Maybe this is that? ...although from what I heard, this device was supposed to have landed somewhere in the Mediterranean.
