Mine just died after 2 years...seriously, do laptops ever last more than 2 years? ??? :-\

What kind do/did you have?

What kind do/did you have?
It was/is a DELL. I still plan on bringing it to the ICT people tomorrow at my university but I think it is done for. At least 3 viruses/malware things the last few weeks. I have a lot of defence actually but it still goes to crap so I am thinking it was/is just on its last leg. I am not sure how I got a lot of these viruses, I mean I do watch a fair bit of porn but these were sites I watched for a long time, never with problems. Could be something else...I don't want to get a mac to be honest...

Have a macbook roughly 4 years still runs like a new machine

I might just do that...

Depends on what you use it for. MacBooks can last a long time because parts are easy to source.

Some of the people are still rocking 90's shit.

I know I am going to get flamed for this...but one of the reasons I don't want a mac is because you can't really play games on them.

Grasshopper, follow my lead: get a Macbook. A 15" MacBook Pro if you can afford it. Or a 13" MacBoook Pro if you are on a budget. Do not get the Macbook Air; they are underpowered and not a good choice.
Even Captain EQ got a clue, bought a MacBook and is very happy with it (but he was still deluded for thinking he could look like Alfoso DelRio "without much gear." ;D

You can't play games on a dead Dell either. :-[

it's a dell, that's your problem. they make some of the cheapest machines out there. over the years I have owned well over a dozen laptops. the best in my experience as far as quality goes and longevity are ibm thinkpads and pretty much anything by toshiba. I wouldn't expect anything less than 5 years out of a toshiba, I have had at least 4 of them myself and never actually had one die on me.
dell on the other hand, I have had several, and not one lasted for even close to two years.

True, Dell's are the naturals of the laptop world. I've had a Toshiba for a few years and works great. I only use it for online ownings and bb.com webcasts though.
-
We've been through like 6 in 4 years, I put my thumb through the screen last time.
-
I have a Toshiba that I've had for just over 5 years and I haven't had a single problem with it and it's been on 16 hours a day EVERY day since I bought it. I had to do one reinstall in that time due to spyware. And I watch A LOT of porn on it.
And this isn't some high dollar laptop either. It was the cheapest one they sold at the time, Celeron processor, on board graphics, etc.
There's a reason Toshiba is the best selling laptop brand in the world. I'll never buy another brand.

1501 XP still going strong since 2006
1701 Studio for one yr and running nicely.
now...i'm not a gamer...just school, quickbooks, office and general apps...also dont bother with uploading porn to my hard drive so major viruses arent a problem.
i'd say i'm getting good mileage for 600-700 a pop per laptop.

then buy a nintendo 64 and go play it you fucking baby,
and as far as a computer, get a mac,
if you want to be cheap and buy some windows based piece of shit then youll be buying every 2 years
-
Before ditching it, install Unbuntu or Fedora with a clean sweep of the entire hard drive. I did that on an older laptop and it took less time to format the hard drive and install ubuntu then it did for windows vista to start up.
-
Just because windoze is dead, doesnt meant he laptop is bad ::)
Format and re-image that bitch, good as new if the drive is physically OK.
And yes, I would use any form of Linux over WIN.

You can put a nail to wall with it. Never breaks.

i doubt any of the parts have been assembled anywhere else than in China even before they "took over".

im admittedly not particularly computer savvy
but everything bad i thats eve happened to a computer of mine has always came from malware and viruses from porn

Yeah yeah, you're right but in past IBM controlled the quality and was responsible to maintain the ultimate business laptop -status of Thinkpads. That kept the quality on top level. They are still best ones out there but quality have declined.

you need a reliable firewall, a good anti-virus/anti-malware program and you are set.
On my old PC, i had Zone Alarm, AntiVir and Adaware and never had any problems. If you are not sure what you are doing, have the strictest setting and from there start to allow single processes and programs. The more programs you have running in the background that have internet access, the easier you fall into a trap.
Weekly full scans of the PC do the rest.
A PC is like a car, you cannot expect it to run smoothly if you never have an oil check, add some air for the tires and so on.
-
Looks like when it comes to computers,
IBM & Toshiba = TEG
Dell = THG
And Deicide, it is most likely an OS issue, so you don't need to throw away the whole laptop - try System Restore or a clean install and it should be good for a few more months at least.
-
Reformat the hard drive. Re-install Win7. Put in free AntiVirus like Avira and/or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Assuming your laptop hardware are fine, it should be good as new.
-
I've been using a freakin netbook for the last year as I was waiting for the AsusNX90 to be released, I then read reviews saying the screen is average - a no-no for me.
I'm either going to go for a Macbook pro or an Alienware. Both would be highly specced and cost around the same. I am not sure which to go for. I'm also worried that as soon as I do in the new year they'll release the next gen ones.
I need to shit or get off the pot!

Nah, dell used to suck. They are decent now that Micheal Dell re-engineered his factories. We got dells laptops at work that are 3 years old and still running strong.
Toshiba are thick and feel cheap IMO. The best PC laptop maker out there is sony.

Toshiba and Dell are both good. There was one issue with Dell where they shipped a huge batch of bad computers that the company knew would not last. They were shipped to schools and businesses. After a year or two all these computers died at the same time and Dell was sued. Other than that, I've seen plenty of dell computers last many years. Same with Toshiba.

Lol my comp died last week. Fucking Ironic as hell. I just decided to turn off my computer for the first time in about 6 months(I hate computers). After 4 hours it wouldnt boot up. Probally a virus or some shit. Forced to use school computers. Sucks as can't use at home or for porn, but I got hours of library time to save the "other users" into my bank :D
-
There seems to have been an abnormal amount of computer crashes the last couple of weeks. From practically never hearing people mention it to at least 5-6 people on my facebook complaining about hard drive failures and now this.
Could a new virus be the cause?

I just think it's the time of the year with school/Christmas/winter. People normally wouldn't give a shit or bother to mention it. These things are only made to last about for 2 years. And if everyone got one, than every month 1 in 24 of your friends will have one die.

Dell was always shit atleast since about 95. But even the toshiba's aren't that great. PC's today are made not to last. Unless their mac.

My wife knows that i watch porn.
It's a matter of courtesy that i change the window when she walks by, because it's unpolite to talk to someone who is looking at his screen, especially so when he/she is watching porn.
Otherwise, she has no problem with it.

Well, G_Thang, see i am a "Moron" and i buy a new one when it comes out and i am down to four. :-\ :-\ How old is she? You might wanna look at the touch screen one's which run $150 and they are 8GB. 8) When it comes to kids you have to watch because it requires a Debit Card to purchase songs, Vid, movies,..etc. You could get her a Ipod and buy her some Gift cards so that she does not "GO WILD" like i did and have $500 come out of your account. :o :o

she's 13, said she can get music from her girlfriend. i was thinking about gift cards for music in which i always give her AMEX cards to buy stuff.
anyway...i've seen ipod classic, nano, etc, have no clue which is the best. ipod touch...is it for music or a phn hybrid? do you need some kind of data plan for it?

It goes through Itunes. Gift Cards are best for when it comes to kids. ;) I have had many Nano's and that is great for the gym but if you want like 30GB, 60GB, 80GB, 120GB,..etc Those are good for movies, T.V. Shows, Music, Book's,..etc but those are good for traveling and can costs more money, hence the price difference. ;)
It all depends on how much you wanna spend. ;)
-
Surely a fully loaded Alienware is a serious alternative to a Macbook pro? It's got a full RGBLED screen that looks stunning. You can just as easily do photo and video editing on it. It doesn't have to only be used for playing the latest games effortlessly with dual graphics processing the carnage. Also can play blu rays..
I'm sorely tempted...A bit garish looking though..not Macbook pretty.

mine is basicallly running like new after 3 years and i use it constantly
i think the key is to install an antivirus, regularly install updates, run disk cleanup and disk defragment

i have a sony vaio at home that's been running for 3 years now. it fell so many times that the actual ports on the sides are shattered, except for one usb port which i connect my ipod to.
i have a dell vostro at work which i'm posting from now. about a year in, works as good as new.
i also have a dell t3400 workstation at home which i just had to re-install because it was giving me the blue screen of death after installing norton from comcast. those fucks.
but it runs like new now too.
i think it's unfair to say "dell sucks" or "macs rule". just goet a quality dell, and you'll be fine. a 300 dollar "netbook" won't give you the supercomputing powers you expect, but i bet a $2,000 dell will.
you get what you pay for.
also, diecide, just re-install your computer, start fresh. i bet it runs like new again.

ive bought about 6 laptops since 2000 and even the one in 2000 is still going strong..dell inspiron.
its a hardcore gaming machine- well, was...
ive bought all brands and run all OSs except macintosh.
not a single one has failed yet. my desktops on the other hand is another story. 2 failed power supplies, one motherboard, one graphics card , 2 cd burners and 2 external hard disk drives in the same time frame.
about 3 bought and all upgraded at least twice each.

I have an ACER with a 18.4" screen. It very rarely ever gets turned off. It is one year old next month. I may get the top Alienware next. I am getting an IPAD from my partner and a ASUS netbook for my car and traveling. I can't haul this big fucker around and the battery life sucks

LOL so like a loser I'm going to carry 3 extra batteries around with me so I can get past the 2 hour mark on a laptop!? my macbook pro lasts 8 hours no problem.
If you get a good laptop, the battery is about the same. Plus on thoses china plane trips you can pop in a fresh battery.

it's almost 2011, yo ucan buy an everlasting laptop with 700 bucks. Times have changed.
Don't buy computers from regular hifi stores where it has everything put together, they suck balls the most, they have integrated everything and they just weon't work..
You allways should buy a pc from a pc store and build it yourself component by component.

Vaio's are awesome too, I also have one, and I have to give honorable mention to my Tohiba portege which is almost as sick as my mac book pro, it's tiny, light, hdmi out, 12" display with full size keyboard, not those fucked up laptop keyboards where 3/4 of the keyboard area is just blank plastic and it's 64 bit native with 1tb of hd space.. awesome machine

I remember this time last year I ordered this laptop. A Lenovo W700 DS. Dual Screen with every upgrade they had. It was about $3500 oput the door. I couldn't wait to get it. Then I got an email telling me it was delayed. Then I got another one. It ended up I got about 4 or 5 delays and everytime I called customer service to find out why I only got busy signals or no one answered. I was getting so pissed off because shipping went from the frist week in December to the last week in January. So I cancelled the order and bought the ACER with the 18.5" screen from Fryes. That pissed me off so miuch. Lenovo has the worst customer service of any company I have dealt with. But, the computeor would have been nice to have.
