Title: Are there "dangerous" areas in European Cities?
Post by: Cy Tolliver on November 24, 2010, 05:36:50 PM
Are there places in European cities (besides Belfast) where you can get killed for basically no reason besides wondering into the wrong area?  I never really saw any.

Do people generally get stabbed, not many guns on the street?

???

We were in Bern Switzerland and there were a lot of junkies walking around.  One guy had a syringe tucked behind his ear.  Don't know how dangerous it is but I was uncomfortable there.

Dublin and Limerick in Ireland have bad areas. Though it is more gang crime.

In Rome I was walking about and found myself in an unfamiliar area where there were lots of Romany/Arab looking fellas. I noticed them notice me and quickly retreated as I was sure something was gonna happen. Probaly spotted the tourist and were gonna mug me and steal my trainers or something

I'm not sure I'd put Belfast on the list when there are dangerous armpits like Paris & Athens.

Take a wrong turn in these cities and you will be in a world of trouble.  Every city has an seedy side but these cities are getting very scary.

There are still punishment shootings and beating every week in Belfast. For such a small city the violence is staggering to think. I live in a decent though modest area though the area I work in now is one of the most deprived areas in Europe with over 60% of adults having NO qualifications. Not even exams you sit at 16 years old.

Be careful to wear the right colour though, you must wear white in most of europe to show that your clean, black in the middle east to show that your serious, and pink in china, to show you just don't give a fuck.

I was with my sister in an unfamilar city clearly outnumbered. I just changed my direction as discreetly as possible and went on my way. I did not know if they had knives or not etc In an unfamilar place you tend to exercise caution a lot more.

Lol most people wouldn't survive anywhere if shoved in the wrong part of a city, don't claim cred just because you know what to be scared of.

The thing about Ireland is the cops here are afraid of any travellers/paramilitary members/general psychos

I agree.

Paramilitaries are tough to control. They don't know who they are a lot of the time. When they do they are colluding with them/protecting them to get information. Also as normal civilians they are hard to identify and up North cops are getting assassinated by the dissident Republicans.

You guys have strict gun laws in Ireland right?  Are guns common though?

Do all the police in Ireland carry guns?

Cops here, as in street cops have no guns, no cop carrys a gun but detectives have access to them, it may be different up north, im in south
Criminals have guns but only use them if they have to

Every single cop in Northern Ireland HAS to carry a gun.

Anyone can pretty much get a hold of a gun if they wish.

Do you think crime rates would drop, if responsible, law abiding citizens in Ireland were given the right to carry concealed pistols like we have in some US states?

???

I saw a documentary with Henry Rollins about Northern Ireland, it was so fucking interesting.  Showed all the murals and stuff, what a place...
