Cerritos mall food court placed on lockdown after fight, reports of gunshots

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department placed a portion of a Cerritos shopping mall on lockdown briefly Friday morning after a fight broke out in the food court.
The lockdown at the Los Cerritos Center was quickly lifted, and mall operations are now back to normal, officials said.
The incident broke out around 2:30 a.m., according to the Sheriff's Department.
The mall had invited shoppers for a special sale event called Midnight Madness. The Los Cerritos Center describe the event this way: "When the clock strikes midnight, Los Cerritos Center will open its doors for the season's craziest night of shopping, with special guest Kari Steele from MYFM 104.3. Stores throughout the center will be open and offering the best deals of the year. Imagine ... all your holiday shopping done before the sun comes up -- now that's insane."
Details about the incident were not available, and mall officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
"Deputies contained the mall in semi-lockdown and did a walk-through, but they were unable to locate the people who were fighting,'' Sgt. Ciro Racowschi told City News Service, adding that some shoppers had reported hearing gunshots. "The parking lot was packed, like during a regular weekend day, but it was after midnight."

An Indianapolis woman was arrested today after she argued with shoppers at a Walmart checkout on Black Friday.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported an off-duty officer working at the Walmart Supercenter, 10617 E. Washington St., had to intervene when customers were arguing about a person accused of cutting in line at a checkout counter.
The officer asked Requita Sullivan, 29, Indianapolis, to exit the store, but as she walked toward the exit, she continued to argue with other store patrons who were in line, according to IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson, a department spokesman.
The woman was arrested on a preliminary charge of trespass, a misdemeanor.
The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m.

Woman shot during robbery on Black Friday near Walmart in Myrtle Beach
A 55-year-old woman was shot in the foot during a robbery attempt after shopping at the Walmart in Myrtle Beach for Black Friday, authorities said.
The shooting happened in front of the Osaka Japanese Steakhouse on 794 Oak Forest Lane, near the Wal-Mart off Seaboard Street, and was reported at 1:13 a.m., according to Myrtle Beach Police Department records.
Another woman, 58, with the victim told officers the victim and another person, a 25-year-old man, were at the trunk of their vehicle when she heard the victim scream, according to an incident report.

Myrtle Beach police arrested a Ridgeway man accused of robbing another man at knifepoint after the victim agreed to give the robbery suspect a ride home from a local bar, according to a police report.
The woman told police that she heard a male suspect demand the victim's purse and then heard a gunshot.
The woman with the victim went into the vehicle and grabbed a gun out of the center console and pointed it toward a second suspect, the report shows.
The woman fired 2 or 3 warning shots in the air and the suspects ran from the scene, one toward the Walmart parking lot and the other toward a wooded area on Grissom Parkway. One of the suspects was able to get away with the victim’s purse.
The victim and the 25-year-old man were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment. The severity of the injuries is not immediately available.
Police are searching for the two suspects.

Customers hit by pepper spray at Wal-Mart describe scene of chaos

Matthew Lopez went to the Wal-Mart in Porter Ranch on Thursday night for the Black Friday sale but instead was caught in a pepper-spray attack by a woman who authorities said was "competitive shopping."
Lopez described a chaotic scene in the San Fernando Valley store among shoppers looking for video games soon after the sale began.
"I heard screaming and I heard yelling," said Lopez, 18. "Moments later, my throat stung. I was coughing really bad and watering up."
Lopez said customers were already in the store when a whistle signaled the start of the Black Friday sale at 10 p.m., sending shoppers hurtling in search of deeply discounted items.
Lopez said that by the time he arrived at the video games, the display had been torn down. Employees attempted to hold back the scrum of shoppers and pick up merchandise even as customers trampled the video games and DVDs strewn on the floor.
"It was absolutely crazy," he said.
Another customer said screams erupted after about 100 people waiting in line to snag Xbox gaming consoles and Wii video games got into a shoving match.
Alejandra Seminario, 24, said she was waiting in line to grab some toys at the store around 9:55 p.m. when people the next aisle over started shouting and ripping at the plastic wrap encasing gaming consoles, which was supposed to be opened at 10 p.m.
"People started screaming, pulling and pushing each other, and then the whole area filled up with pepper spray," the Sylmar resident said. "I guess what triggered it was people started pulling the plastic off the pallets and then shoving and bombarding the display of games. It started with people pushing and screaming because they were getting shoved onto the boxes."
The pepper spray wafted through the air, Seminario said, and she breathed some in and started coughing. Her face also started itching.
"I did not want to get involved. I was too scared. I just stayed in the toy aisle," she said.
By the time she and her husband, 27-year-old Cesar Seminario, got to the cash register 20 minutes later with a Wii gaming console and some Barbie dolls, the air was still smelling of pepper spray, she said.
Wal-Mart employees were taking statements near the front of the store from about eight customers who had been pepper-sprayed, Seminario said. "After we paid, we saw five that were in really bad shape," she said. "They had been sprayed in the face, it looked like, and they had swelling of the face, really extreme swelling of face, redness, coughing."
Nakeasha Contreras, 20, of North Hollywood, said she arrived at midnight and hadn't heard what happened. Even if she had, she said, she wouldn't have minded: "I don't care. I'm still getting my TV. I've never seen Wal-Mart so crazy, but I guess it could have been worse."
Joseph Poulose, who said he was hit with the spray near the DVD and video games display, criticized the store for failing to control the crowds.
"There were way too many people in a building that size. Every aisle was full," he said. Customers were stomping on photo frames and other items on the floor, said Poulose, who tried to protect his pregnant wife from the throng of shoppers inside.
"It was definitely the worst Black Friday I’ve ever experienced," he said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WMBF/AP) - Authorities say gunfire erupted at a North Carolina mall as holiday shoppers gathered, though there are no reports of any injuries.
Meanwhile in South Carolina, three people were shot -- one in the head -- outside a Walmart in Myrtle Beach, where authorities suspect robbery was the motive.
In Kinston, NC, police were forced to use pepper spray in a Walmart when a melee broke out in the store.

In North Carolina, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says detectives are looking for two suspects after gunfire rang out at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville early Friday.
The first shots were fired around 2 a.m. outside the mall near a food court entrance. Investigators say several more shots were fired after 1 of the suspects ran inside the mall.
In South Carolina, A swarm of Myrtle Beach Police Officers rushed to the scene of a Black Friday shooting near a local Walmart.
Myrtle Beach Police Captain Kevin Heins said, three people were shot -- one in the head -- after shopping at the Seaboard Street Walmart. It happened just after 1 a.m. in a parking lot across the street from the big box store in the 700 block of Oak Forest Lane.
Captain Hines said two men approached the group. Hines believes one of the men pulled out a gun in the attempted armed robbery.
Moments later, a man was hit in the head and a shot was fired, striking a woman in the leg, Hines said.
Myrtle Beach first responders rushed the gunshot victim to a local hospital. There's no word on her condition. In the meantime, police are searching for the armed suspects. They ran off after the second woman in the group showed her gun. Hines said they don't have a clear description of who they're looking for at this time.
Captain Hines said he believed the shooting was related to Black Friday shopping. Hines issued a warning to shoppers to be aware of your surroundings and keep your personal safety in mind.
Captain Hines also stated that he's not sure if the shooting was on purpose or if it was accidental.
In Kinston, off-duty officers had to use pepper spray in Walmart after a ruckus broke out early Friday morning, according to WNCT-TV.
A disturbance broke out between some customers and the off-duty officers were forced to use pepper spray to make an arrest. One person was arrested, but charges were not known.
Black Friday is important to merchants because it kicks off the holiday shopping season, a time when they can make 25 to 40% of their annual revenue. It's expected that shoppers will spend nearly $500 billion during the holiday shopping season, or about 3% more than they did last year.

SNELLVILLE, Ga. —A mother and daughter are speaking out after a brutal attack inside a Walmart nail salon.
They showed Channel 2’s Erica Philips cellphone video of the fight Monday inside Regal Nails located at the Walmart on Centerville Highway in Snellville.
Ashley Corbett, 17, said she was an innocent bystander who wound up in the emergency room. Pictures show how her teeth were shattered and her chin sliced.
“I had nothing to do with it,” Corbett said.
“She can't eat, miserable, in pain,” Gail Dudley, the girl’s mother, said.
Witnesses said a woman walked into the nail salon and became upset because of pricing. They said for half an hour or more she cursed at workers and at other customers.
“So something in my mind told me to take my cellphone out and start videotaping,” said Karetha, a woman who witnessed the attack.
Finally, one of the children of the woman clashed with a child of another customer.
“And from there it was off the chain,” said Karetha. “Bowls was flying, glass was flying, hair was flying, braids was flying, weave was flying, everything was flying.”
Ashley was waiting to get her nails done and before she knew it a porcelain soaking bowl hit her in the face and shattered. Witnesses said the woman threw the bowl during the fight and then ran from the store.
“And as I headed toward her all I could see was just blood, she opened her mouth and her teeth were shattered,” Dudley said.
“I didn't deserve it. It just happened to me,” Corbett said. “This is how we're going to have to spend our Thanksgiving, with me healing.”
“It's very important for her to be caught,” Corbett said.
Police continue to look for the woman who started the fight.

BUCKEYE, Ariz. - Black Friday kicked off Thursday night at about 9 p.m.
Toys “R” Us was the first store to open its doors, but it was the Walmart in Buckeye that ended up getting police involved.
Witnesses said a grandfather was with his grandson and wife looking at video games.
They said that people were tearing the box of games apart, trying to get to the videos, and a woman ended up getting punched.
Then the grandson was trampled on in all the mayhem -- even cutting his lip. His grandpa put the game in his waistband so that he could lift the boy out of the crowd.
Witnesses said that's when a police officer grabbed the man and slammed him to the ground – possibly thinking he was stealing the game.
Blood streamed from the victim's face, but witnesses said police didn't believe anything was wrong until they turned the man over.
One man said he saw the whole thing and that it was uncalled for.
“You would have thought there was a cure for cancer in this box,” said shopper Skyler Stone. “I mean people were literally going insane.
“They grabbed the guy, body planted him into the ground -- face shatters on concrete. That's a hard concrete floor inside Walmart.
“All of a sudden, you see this little boy run up and wailing and yelling, ‘Grandpa, Grandpa,’ and crying his eyes out,” Stone said.
Witnesses said the man had about $600 worth of electronics that he was purchasing and wasn't trying to steal anything. They said he was just trying to get his grandson out of harm's way.
Buckeye police aren't commenting, but they said they are investigating the incident.

Two women injured, man charged after fight in upstate Walmart

ROME, N.Y. — Police say two women have been injured and a man has been charged after a fight broke out at an upstate New York Wal-Mart store that had just let Black Friday shoppers into its electronics department.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office tells Post-Standard of Syracuse that several fights erupted around 12:01 a.m. Friday near a cell phone display in the electronics department at the Wal-Mart in Rome, 35 miles east of Syracuse.
Officials tell the newspaper that some shoppers were pushed to the floor and several fights broke out.
Deputies say two women from Rome suffered back injuries in the melee.
Police say a Rome man has been charged with disorderly conduct. Deputies say charges are pending against other people.

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) — People camped out, lined up and pushed through the doors when stores opened as early as midnight for early bird specials this Black Friday.
Everyone was looking for a good deal on that holiday gift, but not everyone was in a giving mood. A small scuffle reportedly broke out at one sale in the Monroeville Mall.
Some consider Thanksgiving to be the start of the holiday season, but dedicated shoppers say it’s today, and they were out in full force.
The gift of sales – a joyous day that comes but once a year. It had shoppers up in the middle of the night, all for a discount.
“I left the house about 10:30,” said one shopper.
Not 10 a.m., no, that’s 10:30 at night.
With many businesses opening much earlier this year, stores had waves of customers at places like Monroeville Mall, where many stores opened at midnight unlike the normal doorbuster rush of Black Fridays past.
One of the most climactic parts of the day was at Victoria’s Secret, where a hot deal on yoga pants had some women fuming.
“Literally, girls were punching each other,” said shopper Liz Wentling. “They threw little bags in baskets and they were just like, ‘Here.’ Girls were literally shoving each other, moms were getting into it.”
The morning shoppers finally settled down, but getting up in the middle of the night meant that some literally shopped till they dropped. Some took advantage of the massage chairs conveniently set up in the mall as they checked their shopping lists.
“Just myself,” said shopper Shannon Smith. “I’m still shopping for myself.”
Of course, Santa Claus is at the mall too. He’ll be there every day from now until Christmas Eve.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man collapsed while doing some Black Friday shopping in a crowded store, and people nearby continued to shop.
Witnesses tell WSAZ.com some shoppers walked around and even over the man's body.
Family members tell WSAZ.com that Walter Vance, of Logan County, W.Va., passed away after being taken to the hospital.
It happened at Target in the Southridge Shopping Center in South Charleston about 12:15 a.m. Friday.
Vance got sick and collapsed on the floor while shopping for Christmas decorations for his newly remodeled workplace.
Vance started working at the Aracoma Drug Company store in Logan when he was 16. He liked it so much, he went to pharmacy school at WVU and has worked there ever since.
He started a new Aracoma Drug Company store in Chapmanville and had co-owned it since the 70's.
Vance was 61 years old. Friends say he's has had heart problems for years and had open heart surgery in 2000, but his death came as a shock, and what happened in the final moments of his life only adds to the heartbreak.
"Where is the good Samaritan side of people?” Vance’s co-worker and friend Sue Compton said. “How could you not notice someone was in trouble? I just don't understand if people didn't help what their reason was, other than greed because of a sale."
One of the late night shoppers tells WSAZ.com what really disturbs her about the situation was the lack of concern by the rest of the shoppers.
An E.R. nurse happened to be one of the late night shoppers and tried to administer CPR. She and an off-duty paramedic who was also shopping did try to help Vance while he was on the floor.
An ambulance was called to the store. Vance was taken to the hospital, but later died.
WSAZ.com called Target Friday. So far, they haven't released a statement about what happened.

Some shoppers are very serious about Black Friday — so much so that they're willing to leave their infants unattended to get a deal.
A photo of a baby left alone in the corner of a Best Buy popped up on Reddit. The person who posted the photo explains:
We are hanging around, resting from standing in the cold for 2 hours, and this woman walks from this little area into the aisles of the store and starts shopping for stuff.
My cousin points out that there's a baby in the carrier and no one's is watching him or her. We decided to see how long the parent would take to come back. 20 minutes. This woman left her infant unattended for 20 minutes in a Best Buy on their busiest and most chaotic day.
Someone could have easily taken the infant out from the carrier and walked out of the store, and she would not have known until she looked in the carrier.
Commenters shared other stories from Black Friday of kids left to fend for themselves as their parents went off to hunt for bargains.
It's not just in-store. Kids also get left in vehicles. One commenter tells his story:
Around 1 A.M. my boss was walking through the parking lot to our store in the mall and witnessed a child no older than 2 years "hanging out of a car".
Here's how it was described to me. The parents had left this kid in their rental car apparently with the doors unlocked. The kid tried to open the door but his foot became stuck in a bag (most likely a shopping bag). So he's got his feet inside the car and is hanging on to the handle of the open car door and if he lets go he will fall face first onto the asphalt. So the poor guy's just stuck there, screaming.
My boss calls the police, of course, and once they'd contacted the rental company to track the parents down, the police basically told them that they could either leave the mall immediately or get arrested.

Man Pulls Gun on Rowdy, Line-Cutting Black Friday Shopper
Impatient line-cutter had allegedly punched man in face. Police say man had permit to carry gun and won't be charged.

Black Friday got off to a rowdy start at a San Antonio mall where police say one shopper pulled a gun on another who punched him in the face while they were waiting in line at a Sears store.
Police Sgt. Rob Carey tells the San Antonio Express-News a man rushed into the store when it opened Thursday night to get to the front of a line, started arguing with people and tried cutting in front of them.
One man who got punched pulled a gun and that scattered shoppers, including the impatient line-cutter who took cover behind a refrigerator. Then he fled.
Carey says the man with the gun had a permit to carry the weapon and isn't being charged with a crime.

A woman’s holiday weekend has just been ruined.
A viewer sent in video of 28-year-old Samantha Chavez getting arrested at a Walmart in Altamonte Springs.
Altamonte police said the Land O'Lakes resident was arrested for several things Thursday night. They said she was being disruptive in the traffic line outside the store. They also said Chavez tried to bully the officer directing traffic and refused to go in line the way she was supposed to.
When Chavez got inside the Walmart, police officers said she caused a scene and threw merchandise on the ground.
Several officers were working detail at Walmart during the incident and several more responded to the call.
Chavez was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer. She was released at about 4:20 a.m. Friday on $550 bond.
The viewer who sent in the video said Chavez was just scared. She was looking for her sister-in-law at the store.
