I think Vince G. was talking about this a while back.
I feel bad for the suckers that buy shit like this.
http://www.steroidtimes.com/progenex-manufacturing-costs-versus-retail-costs/2010
Want some protein, eat a can of chunk lite tuna (60 cents) and have a glass of Milk (50 cents).
Progenex has made every effort to achieve market position as a premier brand of recovery protein, in an effort to justify their average price of $62.50 per bag of protein (1 bag of More Muscle + Recovery = $125/month). However, to achieve roughly $30,000 in sales (which equated to just under $20,000, after tabulating various discounts), Progenex spent a mere $2,600 in production costs.
If the costs for the packaging (the bags) is subtracted from their total manufacturing costs, plus paying a company to put the protein in those bags, the total cost for $30,000 worth of their product is just around $2,000. If the discounts are added in, we find that Progenex is selling Crossfitters $2,000 worth of protein for $20,000. Therefore, according to their own financial reports, each $60 bag of protein costs about $6 to manufacture.
If you’re a Crossfitter thinking about buying Progenex, please consider that you are actually paying $60 for a $6 bag of whey protein, and the rest of your money is going into the pockets of people like Darren Meade.

Not only is the entire industry a sham by default, -- it exists purely to offer a legal counterfeit in place of illegal anabolics -- its existence largely depends on silencing the bodybuilding experts (professionals). Ironically, in order to pay for their considerable drug expenses they need to shut up and accept sponsorships. In order to buy the products they really need, they must promote the counterfeit.
It's sickening! Every new generation of bodybuilders is convinced to spend ridiculous amounts on placebos and then, once they come to their senses, they're forced to wade through floods of BS relating to training, nutrition, drug use, etc. all because the bodybuilders aren't allowed to share the knowledge they've acquired over many years, if not decades of needless personal experimentation. Wasteful beyond belief.

Most supps are trash these days...
Now after 15+ years of heavy training...i have moved on.... i am tired of chewing every damn meal and now started to blend foods to get quick shakes.
Toss in 1 or 2 chicken breasts and a can of beans (no sauces of any kind) like black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans or sometimes oatmeal with a good amount of water and blend away. Makes a great shake i can drink down in a minute and go about my day and have a belly full of real quality nutrients.
I do this about 2 or 3 times a day when work gets to about 60-70+ hours. Totally saves a ton of time and is all mother nature..
-
protein powders are pretty necessary for me
it hard to eat all that protein , especially if you want clean protein
its easy to eat some fatty ground beef, but if you just want a lot of protein, with little fat and carbs.......easy to just drink whey protein
what are your guys opinions??? is all whey pretty much created equal from the six star stuff at walmart to more expensive isolates...........is the more expensive stuff worth it
what are your opinions?

isolates are usually totally lactose free...the cheap brands of standard whey have lots of lactose and for me were much harder to digest...made for horrible 10-inch solid black turds every morning in the office. do not want
yeah id say just go for the quality stuff like isopure or syntrax nectar. they are much higher quality and actually mix easily unlike the cheap stuff which just globs up and mixes with water as well as tar.

actually the stuff from wal mart mixes right up.........it made by the same people that make muscle tech....its just their "economy brand"
so other then black turds or whatever...........what proved to you that the more expensive stuff is better.......are you actually seeign a difference in results?
im with you on the smally black log things thouhg,..........i have been drinking a lot of protein lately cause im dieting , and man do my shits stink
-
I use whey too for convenience.
Some whey is clearly crap -- eating metrx type stuff can literally make me sick. But most of the time I just think, "even if there was a difference between all these brands, how would I ever know?"
I mean, you see some guy with a nice physique who uses fancy whey... change it out with some crappy no-name brand... you honestly think you'll be able to see any difference in his physique? Any health difference? Anything? Highly doubtful.
-
i dont knwo what optimum nutrition did. cause they dont even advertise all that much, or have that many fameous sponsored athletes
but the most ubiquitous supplemt ...............Whey..... ....that have like a monopoly on
pretty much everyone i know just buy ON whey, like by default..........they must make money in buckets
what did they do that everyone buys their whey?
-
I'll bet anything they had some sort of deal with bbing.com to get to the top of their list a long time ago, because these days, i'll tell you how they dominate:
1. clueless kid comes into gym, sees big guy with bbing.com shirt.
2. kid goes to bbing.com sees the #1 most popular supplement: ON 100% whey, for extremely low price (little does he know, the MSRP for supplements is a joke and never respected online).
3. kid buys ten pounds bag and gets a free bbing.com shirt to wear to the gym...

thats true, its cyclical once they get on top
they are on top, cause lots of people saw that they are the most purchased brand of whey............and bought more............which makes them the number 1 brand ..............so more peopel see that , and buy it

gh15 what other protein powder would you recommend? except up your mass, which has carbs.

Can of tuna does not digest as fast as shaker full if isolated whey mixed in plain water?
-
Whey has its place for sure. I was more or less bashing people like Progenex, who sell their stuff for insane prices.
(I think Larry Scott sells his protein for huge coin).
Get a good affordable protein if you use it, don't get taken by the scammer's and snake oil salesmen.
A good home made one I use is: Lactaid low fat milk (easy to digest), Ovaltine powder (extra vitamins), one banana, and a scoop of Natty Peanut Butter. Great shake, keeps me full, lots of protein vitamins and healthy fats.
-
Can of tuna does not digest as fast as shaker full if isolated whey mixed in plain water?
Meh. So what.
-
Some of the more expensive stuff is good for people with food in tolerances who have major stomach issues with lactose, and some of the really cheap shit is very clearly laden with fillers (you can actually see the white speckles from sugar in that Body Fortress shit from Walmart). For most people something like ON or Isopure is fine. I started using stuff from Charles Poliquin's line about 10 months ago because I got diagnosed with leaky gut syndrome and have some major stomach issues with any lactose whatsoever. But then again I also have a wholesale account because we use it at my gym so the cost isn't as bad for me.

maybe you're afraid of missing the post-workout window of opportunity?
-
Meh. So what.
Isn't it essential to provide your body nutrients as fast as possible after heavy exercising? At least in order to advance and in case one don't medicate himself with AAS...
-
maybe you're afraid of missing the post-workout window of opportunity?
I don't know... these things have so much to do with psychology...
Mind is so powerful tool. Never underestimate placebo-effect!
-

Just eat a tuna sandwich an hour before training, I reckon.
I don't think protein powder is in any way nutritionally superior to food. It's possibly inferior since there's no regulation on supps so who knows if the label claims are accurate, heavy metal contamination has been found in some, it's devoid of micronutrients, etc. These aren't really major concerns though given a balanced diet and it's a convenient way to get protein so if it's working for you then go for it.

I would agree with with the general sentiment that there are a lot of scams in the supplement industry, and that most products fail to deliver on their promises. In this case, the real scam has been perpetrated by the author.
I'm one of the owners of Progenex and I wanted to give you the real info about why that post was made on Steroid Times. The author and owner of Steroid Times is Anthony Roberts (also known as Anthony Connors), a convicted felon who has spent time in prison and has a $6m+ judgment against him for stealing and selling confidential information from Dynamic Sports Nutrition, which is why he now lives in his mom's basement as a hired gun for people who want to attack companies like mine. And he continues that trend against Progenex by stealing our confidential information, and presents it in a misleading manor that I will elaborate on.
His website, anthonyroberts.co.za (http://anthonyroberts.co.za), has been removed because of his affinity for destroying companies through fraudulent information and libel, and this post is no exception. His previous website, blog.anthonyroberts.com (http://blog.anthonyroberts.com), was also seized by federal marshals. Before his latest site was shut down he wrote 20 negative posts about Progenex in just 2 months - do you think he probably has an agenda?
He is now being subpoenaed for criminal libel and threats and investigated by police. He and Vince Andrich are part of a criminal ring led by Dr. Scott Connelly, that have been linked to hate crimes against jews, gays and others. They have made it their mission in life to spread false information about our company because Andrich and Connelly are being sued by Progenex for fraud and breach of contract, and Roberts is the outlet they've utilized to defame our company. There is even a website, anthonyroberts.org (http://anthonyroberts.org), dedicated to exposing the truth about him, that he is a cyber-terrorist. You can also learn more about Anthony Roberts Connors here: http://genxxl.com/gossip/anthony-roberts-cyber-terrorism-turns-criminal/ (http://genxxl.com/gossip/anthony-roberts-cyber-terrorism-turns-criminal/)
With regards to the financial information that has been posted, Mr. Roberts has manipulated documents to show illogical conclusions in furthering his agenda. Mr. Roberts (or Connors) failed to include one huge cost that was not accounted for in those numbers - the cost of the protein, which is BY FAR the largest aspect of COGS. Since Mr. Roberts has spent his life trying to destroy companies instead of building them, he understandably has no concept of how to read an Income Statement, and the difference between cash and accrual accounting.
And finally, he's showing numbers from BEFORE we reformulated the products with a superior protein anyway, so he's trying to mislead everyone into believing false information, just as he always does. The previous formulation was based on what Dr. Scott Connelly had been selling while CEO & Director of Progenex, which Roberts has continually posted (again, incorrectly) was a superior product to what we are currently selling. What he's actually unwittingly done is allege that his current employer, Dr. Scott Connelly, had fraudulently sold inferior products for an exorbitant price while he was at the helm of Progenex during that time period.
For those who are skeptical about whether a premium product like Progenex is any better, please read this scientific paper to find out why it is superior to other proteins: http://www.scribd.com/doc/44775562/PROGENEX-Recovery-Tech-Article (http://www.scribd.com/doc/44775562/PROGENEX-Recovery-Tech-Article)
If anyone wants to contact me directly, I'd be happy to explain in more detail why our products are different from anything else on the market, which is why we can give a 100% money back guarantee when most companies in this industry don't.

With regards to the financial information that has been posted, it simply shows that Roberts has no concept of how to read an Income Statement, since he has spent his life trying to destroy companies rather than building them. Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) of 10-15% of retail price is very typical in the supplement industry, and those margins are not unlike many other industries. If you divide the Total Cost of Goods Sold by the Total Income in the graph found in his post, you will see that our COGS were actually much higher, at 24%. So based on the data he has posted, our product is actually TWICE as expensive as most in the industry, even when you factor in the the premium price.
But that's not even close to accurate either, because Mr. Roberts (or Connors) had no idea that there was one huge cost that was not accounted for in those numbers - the cost of the protein, which is BY FAR the largest aspect of COGS. Those costs he has posted include things like packaging, flavoring and mixing, BUT DO NOT INCLUDE MOST OF THE PROTEIN COSTS. Because those financials were on a cash basis rather than accrual, you would actually have to add in around $120k for the cost of the protein that was purchased last November and December, which was used throughout that period. So he has actually showed the public how much more our products cost, both in absolute and relative terms, because when you add that cost, we were actually above 50% COGS. As you can see, Progenex actually costs more to manufacture than most products even sell for, which is why we have a direct-to-consumer model - our products cost too much to sell through stores.
Aaron,
I realize you have to defend yourself on every board from that Douche.
My only complaint is with price/markup. People can get great nutrition with food.
Thanks for coming on here and stating your case though.
Protein does have a place in the Iron Game, if folks want to pay that, its up to them.
Trust me, Roberts is the last guy I would take advice from.
Thanks for stepping forward.
(I still use Tuna/Ovaltine/Lactaid/Peanut Butter) :>)

No problem, I understand. I sure wish our markup was what he reported, we'd be in great shape! Unfortunately, he forgot to mention that we purchased around $120k in protein last December (which was sold over that 7-month period) that was not included in the cost of goods he threw out there. If he really cared about writing an accurate story, he could have easily figured out that he was posting a report on an cash basis, rather than accrual. He must think his readers are idiots if he's trying manipulate them into thinking that we could sell $53k worth of product in March, yet only pay $480 for that product (according to his diagram).
Oh well, every time he posts his lies, I get new people asking me about the products, and we end up acquiring new customers. They say all press is good press, and that's certainly true :)

LOL, I guess now that his website has gone missing there's no more coverage from the CNN of the Steroid World. He's going to have a tough time paying those debts back without a website, and considering that the interest alone on his judgment is around $30k/yr.

Anthony Roberts had an agenda. Ha hated a lot of things, and loved to get stories out there to hurt people without even looking into some of the facts behind it. Unfortunately, many of the stories he wrote were off based, accusing things without any proof.

Frankly, this is a case between the investors of Progenx and Scott Connelly, in which obviously, things went bad, and are now sueing each other over confidentiality agreements, contract disputes and more. The Progenx formula, when I looked into it, looked to be a viable and exciting product, which was high mainstream, based on Scott Connelly's own exciting discussion when we talked when it just was in its infancy.
As for Vince Andrich and Yemeni Mesa, come on now - there are not against Jews, gays or anyone else. I have known both of them for 10+ years, and although we have our difference, accusing them of hate crimes is not fair.
Here I agree with you - this guy doesnt care about people nor companies, and in his blogs, wrote about things which were bullcrap, including about me and many of my friends. Obviously, the right type of protein is very expensive, and there are a myriad different kids of protein (isolate, WPC, casein, Hydro) and different processes, and how much real protein is in a 100% protein.

Anthony Roberts had an agenda. Ha hated a lot of things, and loved to get stories out there to hurt people without even looking into some of the facts behind it. Unfortunately, many of the stories he wrote were off based, accusing things without any proof.

LOL, looks like Roberts got yet another post removed, the same day he made it: http://www.anthonyroberts.org/1210-everyone-is-laughing-at-you-tony/
With regards to Vince & Yemeni, both of them have continually bashed our company publically, doing everything possible to harm us, including on this forum. I have dozens of screenshots proving this. As a matter of fact, Yemeni posted a photo-shopped picture of an orthodox jew holding a rat, with a puppet holding photos of myself and my business partners on a string. The photo was entitled "The Fraudfather," and if you'd like to see I can email it to you.
We can agree to disagree about those two, but as long as we're on the same page with Roberts, you'll always be alright in my book :)

Go from good to great with our function-specific post-workout regimen. Get more of everything you want:
• MAXIMIZE PERFORMANCE. If your training program or sport requires that you build more muscle, lose fat, or take on multiple workout sessions each week, the ability to come back faster and go stronger means you'll perform better.
• REACH NEW GOALS SOONER. Get on the "new personal bests" fast track by taking PROGENEX Recovery after every training session.
• OPTIMIZE BODY COMPOSITION. Maximizing muscle size has a direct effect on your muscle-to-fat ratio, causing significant changes in your metabolism. Not only do you burn more calories during exercise—having more muscle revs up your metabolism for up to 48 hours after your training session.
• COMPETE BETTER, LONGER. More Muscle targets Type II muscle fibers, the kind that enable you to increase your performance in events that include both short- and long-term anaerobic activities.
PROGENEX Recovery and PROGENEX More Muscle are comprised of the most rare and elusive whey protein fractions found today. These "fractions"—which are not available in any other product—enable you to:
• Recover faster and train more frequently. Take on your most brutal workout, and do it again the very next day—with no force loss.
• Build more strength and muscle by accelerating the process that delivers 70% of all exercise-induced muscle gains.
• Significantly improve body composition by increasing 24-hour energy expenditure, forcing your body fat to pay for the "extra" metabolic cost.
The key to PROGENEX Recovery is Promorphogen,™ the highest quality whey protein isolate available, that has been hydrolyzed through a proprietary enzymatic process. This procedure "cuts" the protein into tiny peptide sequences that can be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Fast absorption is essential to the recovery process, and these minute protein fractions have been proven to do just that.
PROGENEX More Muscle contains a full 20 percent more bioactive branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and leucine than regular whey protein isolate. The precise amount of BCAAs added to PROGENEX More Muscle were carefully calibrated, as the leucine content of whole proteins is directly related to how much protein your body will integrate into muscle. What's more, this effect cannot be reproduced by simply adding extra leucine to whey protein isolate or other proteins. Immediately after training, combine 2 scoops of PROGENEX Recovery with 2 scoops of PROGENEX More Muscle and add to 12 oz. water. Shake until blended.
For additional gains, consume a second PROGENEX More Muscle shake first thing in the morning. (2 scoops of PROGENEX More Muscle mixed with 12 ounces of water).
On non-training days, consume one shake first thing in the morning. FAQ RETURN POLICY SHIPPING INFO TERM OF USE PRIVACY POLICY CONTACT Copyright © 2010. Progenex Dairy Bioactives, Inc. All rights reserved.

protein powders are pretty necessary for me
it hard to eat all that protein , especially if you want clean protein
its easy to eat some fatty ground beef, but if you just want a lot of protein, with little fat and carbs.......easy to just drink whey protein
what are your guys opinions??? is all whey pretty much created equal from the six star stuff at walmart to more expensive isolates...........is the more expensive stuff worth it
what are your opinions?
theoretically this seems like a good idea
but in application, i dont think it's a good idea
because those powders are garbage

or buy a box of pasta noodles (one dollar) and a jar of newman's own spaghetti sauce (two dollars) and get 6-10 quality tasty meals... for $3 haha
are you 110lbs? 3 meals max

And when you eat the .60 cent can of tuna, none of that money goes to the tuna, but lines the pockets of the company that makes it. What's the difference? If people are dumb enough to buy it, it's on them.
EDIT: Just realized I responded to a post from 2010.
