Title: Anyone here a personal trainer?
Post by: cephissus on December 07, 2010, 06:48:31 PM
Seems like a sleazy business, but I'm desperate for a job. :(

Not sure if I have the right personality for it.  If anyone has experience with this sort of job I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I tried doing it for awhile but I'm not much of a salesman I discovered. You have to have a good personality and have the ability to talk people into wasting their money.

Thanks for the answer.  What is it about PT that makes it such a sham?  I look at the trainers in my gym and the pathetic workouts people are doing and think "wtf why would anyone pay for this??!"  Is it that the trainers have good intentions but the clients are lazy?  Is it that you can say everything you need to in a couple sessions, but need to sell more sessions to stay in business?  Something else?

actually, i'll just say simply that a trainer is just a baby sitter for adults.  The acception to this is anyone who trains athletes or do rehab work.

Other than that, you're just a guy who sells a shmuck on why they should pay you 80 a hour for you to count reps and wear nice sneakers

I have a degree in health, physical education , and recreation. I have no idea what the hell to do with it. Frankly I was a duche bagge who thought I would be a personal trainer the rest of my life and spend all my time In a gym. Well I kind of grew out of that.

honestly, i'm only doing 9 appointments a week but that is because i'm too lazy to prospect new clients.  Plus, rumor has it that I may be going into a outpatient rehab in the new year and I don't want to take on new clients until after i get out

and yeah- you can make very good money if you do 20-40 hours a week.....the thing is it takes like a year or two to build up that clientele

Yeah, bout 7 years ago I was a fitness trainer/gigalo in NYC... Nah, just kidding bout da gigalo part, but I did actually do a bit of fitness training for about a year or so. My suggestion is that if you want to get into the business then pick a "target audiance" for example, athletes, overweight women, etc. and then focus on reaching that particular audiance. In fact, I'm seriously thinking about getting back into da biz, but I don't want to reveal my "game plan" coz I don't want to worry about outside competition from all these getbig studs that are on dis board ;D

A skinny/fat 20 year old twink came up to me last week when I was on a bike during a free trial session at Fitness First. He told me that for just £18 per hour he could teach me how to train for strength, fitness, fat loss or whatever else. Minimum 10 hours paid in advance. Total approx $400.

I told him I had been training since 1975, had competed in bodybuilding and olympic weight lifting approx 20 times and had been  trainer in the RAF for 12 years. At 5 feet 10 and 215lbs with 12-14% fat at 50 years old  I look 1000* better than him.

So do you want the lessons then ????????? he asked ???

We have top shelf trainers, pro's, guys who can life 600lb for multiple reps with one hand tied behind their backs all whilst holding a 300,000 dollar per year job plus royalties, maintaining a MMA background and high level bbdg physique and sleeping in a 4000SF home with a bentley.  ;)

well cause of greed obviously, they knew that they could lock all these people into a year that would only come for a month ater new years...........so instead of some idiot paying you for  month when he makes his new years resolution, now he pays for a year

If you are going to do it working for a gym vs on your own, it's very different as far as getting clients.  I worked with some trainers, as far as selling them/their clients equipt, who were great and very invested in how well their clients did.  Those were almost always the ones who didn't work for a gym chain.  Most of those were just strictly sales people.  They usually knew zero to minimal about training.

I had customers ask me on a fairly regular basis if I would train them.  I couldn't, our company wouldn't allow it because of perceived liability....and to be honest I really didn't want to.  Having to beg/plead/order someone who's spent their entire life getting out of shape, to workout at 6am just isn't my cup of tea.  So I referred them to a couple of trainers I liked and believed in.

good post

actually, I think i have to go back a correct what I said previously

being a trainer isn't really that bad but you have to decide three things

1) Whether you want it to be your "Career" or you just want some extra cash every month

This is important because this is the difference between spending 60 hours a week prospecting and doing free evaluations in hopes of eventually doing 30-40 sessions a week or being happy with a small client base that doesn't take that much effort to establish.

btw, and this is kind of a aside but, you don't have to do 40 sessions a week to make serious money.  If you "underprice" your hourly rate then you will have to work alot of hours.  Remember, being a trainer is a "Premium" service (in my eyes) and you should charge a premium.  Some trainers are too timid to charge 80 a session- don't be

2) Decide what "kind" of training style you'll use.

Are you gonna have a style that is more of a "NASM" style or are you gonna be a "ass kicker"?  Mind you, these are just two of the several styles that their are out there
You have to do a style that you are good at and confident in using.  A common rookie mistake is when a trainer puts a client on a "Bosu" ball and tries to name all the muscles that are being worked and forgets one thus he starts to stutter and fumble his words.  You are the "Sensei" and they are the "student"- you don't want to look like a clueless putz in front of your client
Just train people how you would train yourself.  It will be easy and organic.  Granted being a "asskicker" will close you from cashing in on that "elderly" or "physical rehab" market but you still have that niche market of "people who want a hard work out"

3) Decide what kind of trainer you are

Are you "Johnny All American" or "Mr. Punk Rock Tattoo"?  Are you the "Cougar trainer" or do you tend to work with alot of Gay men?  Mind you, these are just a couple of the several personalities that their are out there
Find out who you are, embrace it and market it.  Don't be afraid to Stand out because Standing out gets you noticed and getting noticed, sometimes, gets you clients

why did they have to make something SO simple,,,,,...so fucking difficult

well cause of greed obviously, they knew that they could lock all these people into a year that would only come for a month ater new years...........so instead of some idiot paying you for  month when he makes his new years resolution, now he pays for a year

x2....i agree a hundred percent

btw, it isn't even funny how much a weekly sales meeting at a gym is being dedicated to selling the gym approved supplement line

Thanks for all the replies.

Once I learned you had to sell the gym's supplements to clients most of the time I started to get the picture that this probably wasn't the job for me.  I mean, I don't have many traditional morals but I couldn't stand lying to people about how great a deal MSRP isopure is all day.

basically if you have the right personality you can do okay. but it sucks having to hustle all the time to get new customers.

and your main cliente will be fat people and housewifes wanting to "trim" their thighs and asses. best way to keep customers is to compliment and flirt. dont work them too hard or they will quit.

also you would want to work at a gym in a wealthy area.

best advice is to get a real job.

If they are not willing to do the research and realise they're buying worthless junk.....

then I don't have a problem taking their money. Everyone wants the magic fat loss pill.

umm, i guess there is no problem with that

however, the big problem is when general managers are pushing their staff to sell supplements more than selling actual PT sessions

This is especially happening with Gold's franchises that are selling the "Isogenix" line

Gym general managers and the supplement sales man relationship is turning into the relationship that the doctor has with the Pharmaceutical rep

Ehhh times are changing bro... in some states Pharm reps cannot even give doctors free PENS anymore, or pay for their dinners... Also big institutes like Hopkins are now banning full time faculty members from getting involved with pharma speakers bureau's.

As a doc you could easily make $1-3,000 bucks for a 1 hour dinner seminar where they basically pay you to read their slide deck and say "I use x drug for this target population and it works great"... But times are changing (sadly)

btw, and this is kind of a aside but, you don't have to do 40 sessions a week to make serious money.

Don't be afraid to Stand out because Standing out gets you noticed and getting noticed, sometimes, gets you clients

x2....i agree a hundred percent

btw, it isn't even funny how much a weekly sales meeting at a gym is being dedicated to selling the gym approved supplement line

good post johnny,

thats the truth

Ehhh times are changing bro... in some states Pharm reps cannot even give doctors free PENS anymore, or pay for their dinners... Also big institutes like Hopkins are now banning full time faculty members from getting involved with pharma speakers bureau's.

that's a good thing though in my eyes
