PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began a tightly stage-managed visit to Haiti on Saturday in which she visited cholera clinics while avoiding crowds and the press.

The 2008 vice presidential candidate was a guest of Rev. Franklin Graham, whose aid group works in the impoverished country. Haiti is facing a brutal cholera epidemic while struggling with an electoral crisis and reconstruction from the January earthquake.

Palin, who traveled in part by helicopter, provided access on her tour solely to the U.S. cable network Fox News.

Graham's organization, Samaritan's Purse, refused to discuss Palin's itinerary with other media and asked Haitian and American reporters to leave its compounds, citing a "security lockdown."

"I've really enjoyed meeting this community. They are so full of joy," Palin was quoted as saying on the organization's website. "We are so fortunate in America, and we are responsible for helping those less fortunate."

Associated Press television journalists saw Palin talking with foreign aid workers. She wore cargo pants, a T-shirt and designer sunglasses on her first trip outside the United States since speaking to investors in Hong Kong last year. That speech was also closed to the media.

Samaritan's Purse posted pictures online of Palin touring a post-quake shelter, touching the hand of a Haitian child and laughing with Graham and Fox News host Greta van Susteren.

Palin's visit comes amid a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 2,000 people and sickened more than 96,000 others.

This week the country was rocked by riots following the announcement of preliminary results from the Nov. 28 presidential election, which eliminated a popular carnival singer from a run-off in favor of the government-backed candidate.

On Saturday, two of the three leading candidates rejected an offer to participate in a re-count. Protests began again in parts of the capital in the evening.

Though Port-au-Prince was calm for most of the day, Palin avoided the capital, heading north to visit a Samaritan's Purse project in the small town of Bercy.

No Haitians interviewed had heard of Palin, but when told she is an American politican, they said her visit was welcome.

"It would be good if she came, because we could tell her that we need medicine and jobs," said Roseline Frederique, a 21-year-old resident of the capital's Cite Soleil slum who is being treated for cholera symptoms.

it's fine for a photo op to quickly build her foreign policy resume.

She'll bring up this trip a thousand times in the debates.

But this "avoid every media outlet" thing - running for persident - is gonna get old.  People wanna ask her questions.

I didn't know this thread was about clinton/obama.  The thread title said it was about palin.  Only your post tried to change the topic.

I dunno what I said that you disagre with ???

It's obviously a photo op, as are visits from most politicians who smile, talk to a few people, surrounded by their team, then fly outta there.  Nothing wrong with it.  My point is that we should do a drinking game during the debates - do a shot everytime she talks about her foreign relations trip to Haiti ;)

She's at least given money to help Haiti in the past,

correct.

While most stars were loading up on swag from the Oscar gifting suites, Sarah Palin left one of them with less than when she arrived. The former vice-presidential candidate made a $1,700 donation to the Red Cross for Haiti and Chile at a swag suite at LA's Interior Illusion store Wednesday. A spy said, "She picked up a ton of gifts, but she gave the lot to the Red Cross, along with a cash donation. The only thing she took for herself was a bottle of Ty Ku sake." Palin attended an "American Idol" show and appeared on Jay Leno's "Tonight" before heading back east to pitch a reality-TV show.

it was a photo op.  she used her credit card to donate 1700 bucks, which was admirable.

but a year later, showing up and smiling with a few people then giving FOX an interview before jumping a plane back to the states?

if she spent a week down there building houses - hell yes I'd give her props.  But a half-hour on a runway smiling with lips pouted and boobs pressed out foe the cameras is nothing more than building her 2012 foreign policy case.

and the same ppl who hated on Obama for only donating such a small % of his fortune to charity - should maybe look at 1700 bucks out of 12 million that she earned.

i donated $80 to Salvation Army this year - I'm betting it was a bigger % of my broke ass earnings than her 1700/12000000.

Anyway, it's admirable that she gave anything - serious props for that.  But this visit wasn't about handing them a check, was it?  She will brag about this in the 2011 debates dude.

The day the world stood still: Sarah Palin is "there", proudly wearing her "Skinny Raven Sports" t-shirt, closely followed around exclusively by Greta "Cuda stalker" Van Susteren for Fox News and her husband John Coale - and Todd, Bristol and Franklin Graham and his daughter.

As a result, Sarah's foreign policy street cred rose dramatically: After visiting a military base in Kuwait, a military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, some hotel in Canada and spending several hours in Hong Kong, she now can tick Haiti off the list. Oh my God, is this unqualified black man still in the White House? The Cuda has seen Haiti! She herself, in person, breathed the air that very poor people breathe, and even touched some of these poor people "Mother Teresa style", while this schmuck Obama spends all his free time uselessly hanging around at golf courses! What else do you want, Americans? Love her NOW!

The holy mother of the North Star, does she look good or what:

Here is a first clip from the trip, published by Samaritan's Purse:

OK, snark aside: I am certain that Sarah Palin's photo-op in Haiti doesn't fool anyone, apart from Sarah's die-hard fans, who have a long and proud tradition of being fooled by the Quitter Queen.

Sarah's trip was already discussed on the Ed Show, and even the GOP-person finds it difficult to hide the fact that her trip was just an extended photo-op, designed to enhance Sarah's foreign policy credentials:

At the beginning of the post, I mentioned Barack Obama and his "elitist" hobby of playing golf.

Just a few days ago, Lawrence O'Donnell gave a scathing commentary about Sarah Palin, regarding her remarks about Barack Obama playing golf.

What did Sarah say about President Obama and playing golf?

From Time Magazine's story about their "email interview":

So what exactly is at stake? Does Palin really want to be President and assume the burdens that go with the job? Or is she just teasing the Grand Old Party while she lays the foundations for a more comfortable life as a public provocateur, doing TV, writing books, making speeches and dabbling in politics as it serves her greater goals? The former scenario is what many in the Republican Party are dreading; the latter one is freezing the likely GOP presidential field until she clarifies her plans. And Palin, naturally, wisely and consistently, is coy about the answer. "I would run because the country is more important than my ease, though I'm not necessarily living a life of ease," says Palin, who answered questions from TIME via e-mail. And in a shot at Obama's habit of playing golf during the "recovery summer," she added, "I'm very busy helping people and causes. So busy, in fact, I haven't had time to hit the links in quite a few years."

That's what Lawrence O'Donnell had to say about this remark:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/40598599#40598599

When I searched for this quote, I also found another remark by Sarah Palin which I had missed so far. Another "mean girl" remark about Obama playing golf, but this time, with a different angle. MSNBC reported it like that:

In a joking reference, she predicted defeat for Obama in the 2012 presidential election, saying her TV show would be followed by a sequel called "Barack Obama's Golf Courses", which she said would start up "sometime November 2012".

Greta Van Susteren reported this remark as well - and was more "explicit":

Speaking about her upcoming reality television series, "Sarah Palin's Alaska," Palin joked that the producers of her show are thinking about a sequel called "Barack Obama's golf courses," implying the commander in chief will have plenty of time on his hands after the 2012 elections.

Sarah Palin loves to dish out. But don't pick on her! That would be mean, wouldn't it.

Sarah, you hair looked good in Haiti. Mission accomplished. You can be proud of yourself.

No, I think Palin is an ego maniacal nutjob. She has been in the public eye long enough to "judge" (ie., form an opinion for oneself).

and your opinion of obama?

god tony.... it's always the same with you.  you have no problem cheerleading a shit 2012 repub ticket because "the dems suck TOO"

jeez.  such low standards.  WHY?  We all know you have very high standards for your education, your physique, your competitive fighting - but when it comes to standards on politicians, it's just "our shit 2012 offering is slightly better than Obama!"

I don't get that man.  Do you go to the gym and say "well, i'm stronger than that guy over there... no need to lift any more today!"  Or do you go in and train to be the biggest, baddest guy in the place?

These brutal low standard by GOP voters put in a senile joke like mccain in 2008.  They let mccain choose a completely unvetted candidate in palin.  They let GOP primary voters choose unelectable embarassments like Angle, Odonnell, and Miller in 2010.

You see what I'm getting at?  I'd stand on my lawn with Thune2012 sign for the next 2 years if I didn't think you GOP primary voters would settle for 2 morons because "they're STILL better than obama!"

Franklin Graham: Palin's Compassion Touched Haitians' Hearts
Thursday, 16 Dec 2010
By Henry J. Reske and Kathleen Walter

Sarah Palin’s visit to the earthquake-ravaged Haiti showed she is not “afraid to get her hands dirty,” says the Rev. Franklin Graham. The former Alaska governor is a “woman of strong principle and no question she has a strong faith in God,” the son of renowned evangelist Billy Graham said during a Newsmax.TV interview in which he discussed his hosting her Haitian visit.

“I showed her what Samaritan’s Purse has done” to alleviate the suffering from the killer earthquake and a hurricane this year, said Graham, president of the international relief organization. “We have built over 10,000 shelters for people to live in. We have set up entire communities across the Port-au-Prince area, but more importantly there is a cholera epidemic now and this cholera epidemic was understated . . . This could be a huge, huge problem. We have already 2,000 people dead.”

The January earthquake killed more than 200,000 people and left more than 1 million homeless. The poverty-stricken country was hit with a cholera epidemic in October and then widespread flooding after Hurricane Tomas in early November.

Samaritan’s Purse has set up two clinics, including one with 200 beds, to treat a disease so deadly in can kill in hours, Graham told Newsmax.TV in the exclusive interview.

Graham, who said he has worked with Palin on a number of projects in Alaska, invited her to Haiti to view the relief efforts. Accompanying her on the tour last weekend were her husband, Todd, and daughter Bristol.

The former GOP vice-presidential candidate “has tremendous compassion for people, she loves people, and she cares deeply about people,” Graham said.
“She was an encouragement not only to the staff and to the relief workers (but) even to the Haitian people who didn’t know her,” Graham said.

“She came in with her smile. She would sit on the cots. Now, you have to understand a cholera clinic, these cots have been soaked in urine, and fecal matter, and vomit. Cholera is a horrible thing, and she just sat right there in the middle of it, holding peoples’ hands, talking to people, holding babies, it was an amazing thing. She’s quite a lady and not afraid to get her hands dirty.”

The topic of whether Palin will run for president did not come up, Graham said. News reports about her visit have quoted her as saying it wasn’t time to be political. Instead, she said as she ended her two-day visit, “I do urge Americans not to forget Haiti."

As for Graham’s appraisal of Palin, he said: “When you read her book ‘Going Rogue,’ she gives a testimony on how she gave her life to God. And the last page of her book ‘Going Rogue,’ she mentions or says to the reader if you haven’t done what I’ve done, I encourage you to do it. And she invites a person to invite God into their heart, their life. I’ve seen the governor on a number of occasions and no question her faith is a big part of her life — that’s who she is. She’s a believer in Jesus Christ, a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, that’s just her makeup. It’s her DNA.”

Her ability to sit on a crapsoaked cot was evident to most voters, as they read "Mccain/Palin" on the ballot.
