Title: Protein cost per source
Post by: No Patience on December 16, 2010, 12:50:43 PM
Many people talk about protein powder being a waste of money etc etc.

This is how much 25g of protein costs me per source:

Whey(true protein's WPC/WPI) $.37
Skim milk ($2.29/gallon) $.45
Whole eggs ($1.68/dozen) $.58
Tuna can (Starkist $.77/can) $.96
93% Burger ($3.95/lb) $.99
1% Cottage Cheese ($2.69/tub) $1.54
Chicken breast ($3.99/lb) $.99

The way i see it, whey, eggs, milk are the cheapest sources with whey being by far the cheapest.

Whey is good when you dont have a big appetite, when dieting for example you feel more "full" when eating something solid.

Tuna is the cheapest. It's all protein. Milk is more sugar than protein. To get a tuna tin's worth of protein (roughly 30g) from milk you'd have to drink 2 pints of milk, which would have fifty grams of lactose sugar, and could lead to needing a shit a lot.

yeah tell me about it....i have been on a cut since august, losing only 1lb per week max....very slow
but leaner than i have ever been 10.1%

i get about 80g of protein daily from whey, which you are correct, leaves me hungry much of the day but it is convenient

fyi, i am using the adonis and wave principals....started at 19%, now at 10.1%

tuna is not even close to the cheapest at my prices...i understand what you mean by pure protein....and tuna cans have
shrunk from 30g to 20g of protein

that's why I choose eggs over chicken. I rarely eat chicken because of the price. Egg whites and whey are my main sources of protein.

I go for grass-fed beef whenever I can. - usually around 7.99/lb where I live

No restaurants use it though, but I'd pay extra if they offered it.

The Tuna, that's high. I pay like 50 cents a can. (Chunk Light, though White is better).
For Chicken, you can get away cheap with regular breast (bone in) or chicken thighs. (Like 1.29 per lb.)

Anyways, good post, I just happen to be cheap, and I love teh regular breasts, skin, with bone.
Baked with a chicken rub, yumm, want some now at 4 AM !

i am doing a CSA right now with a farmer from a small town near me....i get 10lbs of grass fed beef
for $65....he gives me 1 roast, 2 sirloin steaks, and 4-5lbs of burger...i can do this monthly or bi monthly
depending on my budget...much better than buying a 1/4 or 1/2 beef because i never deal with the
neck bones, tongue, ribs and other shit that you pay for and dont eat...

i feel much better feeding my family grass fed beef

Some in this thread go the "straight from the tap" route where it only costs them .05 a serving.

i always wait till smart chicken is on sale...i usually get it for 3.99/lb...i buy 10-15lbs and spend an hour
sorting it and vacuum sealing it, then into the freezer....a 6oz raw chicken breast from smart chicken
still weighs almost 6oz after it is cooked....that cheap shit almost loses half it's weight
