Title: When did you realize wrestling was a script?
Post by: outby43 on December 17, 2010, 05:15:25 PM
I didn't want to put fake because they put their bodies through hell but I found out the heated arguments that occurred on camera was a farce when my dad was working in downtown St. Louis.  At the time, Wrestling at the Chase was big with all the stars coming through.  This was before there was a WWF.  People like Dick the Bruiser, the Von Erichs, Bruiser Brody, Andre the Giant, Harley Race, Ric Flair, Billy Graham among a host of others were always coming in.  Well it was in the mid 70's,  I was a huge Ric Flair fan and he was having this feud with Harley Race.  They were to fight for some title I think.  Me and my dad would always watch wrestling on Sundays and I think those matches were taped from Saturday nights.  He went out to lunch on a Friday at one of the diners downtown by the Chase Hotel and saw Flair and Race and a few other wrestlers eating together and cutting up.  He was able to get me some autographs on a paper menu they used to have back then.  That's what did it for me.  I never looked at it the same after that.  I still watched though and enjoyed it.  It went from "serious business" to just entertainment.  Hopefully people here believe my story about my dad meeting Flair and Race because nobody in my 3rd grade class did.  ;D.

not sure why no one would believe your story about your Dad meeting Flair.

I have met Hulk Hogan (passing through Tampa airport) and Ultimate Warrior (picture session back in 1988)

meeting wrestlers is not all that rare...

Well I suppose back then with only 4 stations to watch on TV these guys were like stars and meeting them was unthinkable.  Hell,  I don't know.  This was 35 years ago dude..lol.

Because 3rd graders are assholes.

Seriously, though, I'm surprised that Flair & Harley would be seen dining together during a feud.
Kayfabe was serious stuff back then.

I remember even as late as 1987 the old man firing Sheik and Duggan because they were caught sharing a car to the next town.
They also had marijuana & cocaine in the car, but Vince was primarily mad that two of his wrestlers who were supposed to be feuding at the time were riding together and made the news.

I think Duggan only got suspended for that, as he apparently remained with the company for quite a few years after that.

wiki does say Duggan was released, but it couldn't have been for very long..

No, I think it was only for several weeks - I'm only going from memory here.

Iron Sheik was released a bunch of times only to be rehired again and again.
Why?
A popular belief is it was the McMahon's appreciation for Sheik's loyalty during Verne Gagne's attempt to "steal" Sheik & the WWF title away from Vince just before Hogan became champ in '84.

Capt. Lou was fired and rehired numerous times.
Guys were suspended left & right.

There's still a great deal of leniency (for certain people) today, but nothing like back then.
