I complement people all the time as a way of staying humble and acknowledging the success of others, so I was naturally distressed when I found out that flattery is a sin
can anyone offer some insight or clarification on the matter?

on a serious note i think it comes down to intention and possible consequences: are u praising them to get their favor? are u praising them too much so it affects their character/actions? etc etc

Yeah or to deceive them or something... To honestly and sincerely compliment someone isn't a sin.
