Title: Burke vs Wheeler
Post by: Royalty on December 28, 2010, 04:04:46 AM
Which pic is the most impressive? I know Flex was the more successful competitor. But which pic here jumps out more...?

Flex.

Look at that shape! Man, it might never be duplicated...

Burke had the wow factor on that pic but Flex had the proportions and symmetry. His overall balance was much better.

I think we'd all rather look like Wheeler than Burke somehow.

Burke would be more impressive in real life because of his WIDTH, dude was as wide as a kiosk.

Do both have fake calves? Orville seemingly never used it in his arms like Flex, but maybe in his delts!?

Orville had a rear lat spread which Flex never did. Orville had horrendous aesthetics.

I saw Orville at a contest I did  in Connecticut one year and he had the most insane back I ever saw to this day.

That pic of Flex is from 1993, the Ironman, which he was heavier than his Arnold condition. The only thing he was puttig in his delts (and possibly calves) at the time was escilene, which Levrone was using.

Burke's high lats gave a illusion of width, I forgot, but his back detail was not as good. He also had the "thick skin", which meant it was harder for him to come in condition...

Burke By far.

Flex by far.
Burke has a very whack looking torso, those high lats really detract from his flow IMHO.

it wasn't an illusion

Ahhh, but you put a pic of Flex when he was 214 pounds and so called "natural"... This was his last Olympia...I have the video in which Flex was prepping for it...he looked noticably smaller...and he was never known for his width...as I stated before, the high lats give a illusion of width, because of the "missing" space, he was wider than Flex, but who wasn't...but he was not wider than Ronnie, Nor Levrone, Dorian, or even Chris Cormier (I believe)...
Flex wins in terms of shape, size and round muscle bellies, Orville wins the freak round...

I often think his high lats were due to his youth in which he states that he would always be doing pullups...like Ronnie had stated in his youth all he would do is bicep curls before going to bed.

Shape went to Flex, size and freakiness went to the Jamaican...
But, what is odd, is Flex was 9th back in 1995, and his shape and conditioning in that show, would have won him a Mr. O today...same with Burke...

Flex is vastly superior IMO
but that year when flex was sick and said he was going in natural he should have never beat orville or even place top 12

No illusion he was the widest , I think it was the 02 Olympia in the write-up said Orville was the widest guy on-stage

ND, I have stopped reading those write ups, especially if they want to spin things to sway others...I will always remember Johnny Fitness' write up on one of the Arnold's that Jay won...He said thar Jay had a better back than Chris Cormier, and on the same page, there was a BDB shot, and you could clearly see Cormier winning that shot...all day long...after that, I stopped believing the contest write ups...

Well he was a hack and Flex had a hard-on for Jay saying the only two guys in history who could beat him in a back shit were Ronnie & Dorian  :-X

but Burke was wide as fuck , had super-wide clavicles to boot

well, here is Gunter and Burke during prejudging at the '02 olympia.

Gunter clearly is the heavier bodybuilder, but Burke wins the pose.

Yeah, I agree, I'm not saying he wasn't wide, he was very wide, it's just he seems more of an illusion, I guess maybe I think it's his flow? It's something I cannot put my finger on, just something ain't right, and it has to do with his high lats...he's more like a bigger version Dexter Jackson, without the conditioning.

Id say hes more equivalent to a DJ, same kinda structure, same kind of high lats...
People seem to like guys with high lats because it gives the impression of having a huge lat spread and taper, where low inserting lats a lot of times will give the illusion of a shitty taper, unless your Dorian Yates.
I think that may be what youre trying to get across.

My view of bodybuilder has evolved over time. I used to thing Arnold was the epitome of aesthetics and what a bodybuilder should look like. Now with guys like Phil Heath, Jay, Ronnie, etc you see that having insane size and width are more important. No so much width for Phill but he has really filled his body out to the max for his frame.

LOL. I just thinking about Burke last night because I got an email from a friend who use to train at the same gym as him. Said he was a monster. He also had asthma and was always sucking wind. It was mentioned here before that he just lived off his wife who worked full time and spent most of his time in their apartment reading comic books and playing video games.

I never understood why didn't place higher. Always looked pretty damn impressive.

Didn't he work as a doorman at Trump Towers? Flex ran piece on him (The Big Picture) showing him in doorman uniform with Donald Trump...and I think he had a nice salary as well.

ROFL that's awesome. My dream right there. Marry a sugar momma that allows you to train and eat all day.

Yes, I heard that as well. Apparently it wasn't a long lasting gig. Don't really know. I just remember thinking after hearing about sitting around all day reading and playing video games -- SWEET.

I'm not exactly a type A personality and only get out of bed under heavy protest and a screeching alarm clock.

Some cool pics of Orville there but no way he beats Flex.

Flex is the most geneticly "shaped" BB of the last 20 odd years.

Flex is so overrated, so narrow and lacking any sort of balance from the front, his arms and shoulders were about ten times the size of his tiny chest. I think of aesthetics i think of Cormier, Paris, Reeves, et cetera.

Orville was a freak, super wide and carrying a ton of muscle, not pretty but impressive.
